do you have a c:\freebsd\floppies\root.flp?

If you do, write down *exactly* what the error message is. It could
also be a geometry translation problem.

John, Thanks a million for the timely response!!!,

The 'floppies' directory is there (boot.flp, root.flp)...

I went through the procedure again, and wrote everything down, as per your
suspicion it appears to be a translation problem...

Install error reported:
'FAILED TO LOAD THE ROOT DISTRIBUTION. PLEASE CORRECT THE PROBLEM AND TRY
AGAIN'

in the background:

warning:calculated sectors per cylinder (4096) disagrees with disk label
(4032)

/mnt/dev/rwd1s1e: 203792 sectors in 94 cylinders of 1 tracks, 2168 sectors

debug: Starting an emergency holographic shell over on the fourth screen

debug: Generating /etc/fstab file
mountmsdos( ):root directory is not a multiple of the clustersize in length

gunzip:stdin:invalid compressed data --format violated
/stand/cpio: premature end of file.

HANG....

My CMOS reports the drive (through autodetect) as:
Size: 1271M Cyls:616 Head:64 Precomp:0 LZ:2465 Sector:63 Mode:LBA

BSD Kernel boot reports:
WD1, 1213, 2485728, 2466, 63s/t, 512 b/s

The drive is a SAMSUNG 1.2gig...
physical drive parameters (from the manual) are:
MODEL: PLS-31274A
FORMATED CAPACITY: 1272.7
CYLINDERS: 3842
HEADS: 6
SECTORS/TRACKS: 71-131
INTERFACE: AT

Is there a 'set' way to calculate the correct geometry? I've used the
pfdisk utility included with the cd, and punched in the reported
numbers..to no avail. (also went through the on-line faq's - didn't find a
whole lot on fixing non-scsi geometry problems...)

Thanks again...
