Yes, I know, this can (partially) be done with Xfce, Gnome, KDE, Lxde, but more or less, that is fighting Linuxisms and still being stuck with stuff that has been abandoned in Linux world many years ago (think about HAL and DBus). The degree of incompatibility could be increasing if the modern development of desktop environments will concentrate on Linux as the target, and on FreeBSD, you can only get 3/4 of what's technically possible.
