I agree, but that's not your problem.

There is work being done on devfs and utilities to make this go away.

Your problem seems to be that you are using a SCSI->ESDI converter on an
old ESDI drive and it isn't acting like a real SCSI device should.  It
might be the LUN code; I seem to rememebr options in LINT for this.
