Woof!  UGLY!!!   Arghhh....   :-(

Dunno.

a) I am not near the system -- it is miles away from me until next week

b) I've never tried this, but it is no better that your
   gross hack -- I need to be able to quit Xorg and then be
   returned to the ASCII console window (vty or tty0)
