Make sure that ~/.xsession (if it exists) is executeable. Also take a
look at .xsession-errors (or .xdm-errors if it doesn't even get around
to starting xsession for some reason). Most of the time, this means your
.xsession crashed (remember, when .xsession exists, your session ends!)
