His address is Jon Radel <jon@radel.com>, and is using S/MIME plugin to Mozilla Thunderbird.

You should be able to view the text portion just fine, even if your MUA doesn't understand the smime.p7s attachment.  I gather you're using Outlook, perhaps it's having problems?

Too much sanitation makes it hard to figure out your problem.  However,
if that amnesiac.xxxx is actually amnesiac.com this probably relates to
the fact that DNS for amnesiac.com is horribly broken.

dig +trace amnesiac.com

should start you down the appropriate path.
