Cause ide is broken and won't allow concurrent operations over two drives on a chain. Which, btw, really sucks, when a cdrom and a fast hd are on the same chain so when the cdrom is taking a long time completing an operation (especially evident when it has a read error), i/o to your hd is completely blocked.
