I've read before:
  the standard bootloader looks for the first freebsd slice, and runs
it.  If there's no bsdlabel partition 'a' then it will have trouble
booting.

I haven't followed this thread in detail.

I briefly saw you had 3 slices defined, is by chance the first slice a
<non>system disk?
