The question: Is there a way to install and then boot FreeBSD on the second ide disk without modify the first disk (except possibly the master boot record)? The environment: I have a Gateway 2000 P5-90 machine (wife's actually) that has a 700Mb EIDE drive dedicated to win311. I have added a 2Gb EIDE drive as a second drive with the intent of running FreeBSD on it (the other IDE controller is used for a CDROM drive under windows). There is also an Adaptec 2940UW PCI SCSI controller with a SCSI CDROM drive attached for FreeBSD use. I have the 2.1.5 CDROMs from Walnut Creek. The goal: I would like to use half of the new 2Gb drive for FreeBSD and potentially the other half for OS/2. The trick is that I need to leave the 700Mb drive as untouched as possible. Most of my own experience is with Macintoshes and IBM mainframes where booting or IPL'ing off of different disks is not really a problem. As I have come to discover, this is quite complex in the wintel/PC world. The documentation that comes with FreeBSD discusses using BOOTEASY only with a single drive (as far as I can tell). When I go through the install process for FreeBSD it seems to assume that if I want to install the BOOTEASY program that I will want to install it on the same disk that I am going to install FreeBSD on. My understanding is that in order to use BOOTEASY I will have to install it on the C: drive (the 700Mb), not the drive where FreeBSD is going to be installed.
