I'm going to be polite given the hassles of previous weeks but a lot of what gets imported because you're in a rush to get some installation issues resolved ends up being ripped out at a later date, e.g. ftp code, NCftp, then libftp and now some hand coded stuff. David just junked libftp because it's now obsolete, I think it lasted one (did it even last one) release and was only use by sysinstall. A little more patience and discussion regarding some of the things you're working on would be a good thing. I'm not aware of any immediate rush to get a release of any sort done. We're not all sitting next to huge development boxes, I'd like a little more care to be taken with the cvs repository because it never shrinks, it always grows because it records all our mistakes and keeps all that legacy code hanging around. Let's all step back and think before we commit things rather than relying on the ability to back it out later. -- Paul Richards, Bluebird Computer Systems. FreeBSD core team member. Double WHOA!! That is WIP for a white paper, that we should be working on :-), it has not been presented nor fully tested as a conceptial model. Peter has done some initial ``what if'' work and done the very simple cases, and is taking a look at the harder issue of how to do things like the libc part of bind. Your jumping the gun by _MONTHS_ on the concept of src/external. Jordan, others, just ignore this little tid bit from Paul, the right thing was done here with the import of ee as the mode of operation for FreeBSD's cvs tree as it stands today. I know I have become a bit of a gating issue on that little white paper, as Peter has expressed to me that he needs an outline to really get him rolling, and I just have not had the time to write such an outline. Perhaps you (Paul) would be willing to write an outline that we can pass around between us, I think you fully understand the model, and have plenty of cvs background to flush out the ``how to do initial vendor imports into src/external'' (working name only, don't get stuck on the name) and ``how to do upgrade imports''. Like I stated in my initial proposal to you and Peter, this will never be made to fly as a mode of operation for the FreeBSD project unless we write a paper fully describing the paradigm and a guide on how to work within the constraints of the paradigm. A cvs hackers guide for FreeBSD has been requested more times than I care to count. And if the cvs aware like yourself, Peter and me want to see things ``done write'' it is going to be up to us to provide it. -- Rod Grimes rgrimes@gndrsh.aac.dev.com Accurate Automation Company Reliable computers for FreeBSD From owner-cvs-usrbin Wed Aug 30 12:19:23 1995 Return-Path: cvs-usrbin-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) id MAA25916 for cvs-usrbin-outgoing; Wed, 30 Aug 1995 12:19:23 -0700 Received: from gndrsh.aac.dev.com (gndrsh.aac.dev.com [198.145.92.241]) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) with ESMTP id MAA25894 ; Wed, 30 Aug 1995 12:18:30 -0700 Received: (from rgrimes@localhost) by gndrsh.aac.dev.com (8.6.11/8.6.9) id MAA09180; Wed, 30 Aug 1995 12:17:32 -0700 From: "Rodney W. Show me an editor that's implemented as one 110K source file and I'll be impressed.. :-) Seriously, that's also not the point. I looked long and hard for a "minimal" editor that ALSO documented itself (BIG difference from stevie and elvis - both still just come up and look at you with no hint as to what to do next) and ee was the best I'd found so far.. When I added the code to 2.0.5 to edit /etc/exports because the user had selected "I'm an NFS server" and I knew that it wouldn't work without an /etc/exports, I knew that I was letting myself in for trouble by just tossing the poor sucker into vi and I was right. Oh, the hate mail I got for that! "WHAT were you THINKING? I've never used vi in my life and couldn't even figure out how to get OUT of the damn thing!" was basically the general sentiment. And they were absolutely right. I'd be pretty pissed off if somebody dropped me into their `foobolix' editor with EBCDIC command characters and the hardwired expectation of an IBM 3101 terminal. Oh sure, it might be *totally standard* in IBM shops the world wide, used by tens of thousands of users, but I still wouldn't know the first thing about it and would rather resent someone else's expectation that I should. ee, on the other hand, devotes some screen real-estate to describing the command set and has a little popup menu for configuring it and getting help that is easily used with the arrow keys. Just what the doctor ordered, and it's even got I18N support so that we can translate its internal messages for those who both don't know the editor AND don't speak english. It just doesn't get much better than that for editors comprising one C file. > We are a BSD OS, not a DOS Weenie OS, if the user doesnt understand VI, > that's his problem not ours, clueless DOSers are of debatable benefit, > `Least suprise' requires we offer a vi like interface. Since every possible distrinution choice from "minimal" through "full" will have /mnt/usr/bin/vi and /mnt/usr/bin/ee at the point then the /etc/exports editor is launched (ie: at the end of the install), how about drop ee, and *possibly* vi off the boot floppy (unless it's on the root floppy, of course.. :-), and ask the user which editor they want to run?
