It has on-board EIDE, of course, and it has no problem booting off its 9.1GB Seagate Medalist Pro UDMA drive. However, the BIOS simply refuses to see the 4.5GB Quantum Viking drive I have plugged in. Once I'm into Win98 or FreeBSD, the SCSI devices (the Viking and a Toshiba CD-ROM) are recognized just fine. If I pull the UDMA drive out, the BIOS complains that there is no boot device. I'm using the Asus SC875 wide SCSI adapter, with the devices plugged into the internal narrow interface. I'm not sure if the AOpen has the NCR boot BIOS, but it shouldn't matter, since the SC875 supplies that. I own an AL440LX as well and had exactly the same problem: > psm0: current command byte:0047 > kbdio: TEST_AUX_PORT status:00fa > kbdio: DIAGNOSE status:0055 > kbdio: TEST_KBD_PORT status:00fa > psm: keyboard port failed. > psm0: the aux port is not functioning (250). > psm0 not found at 0x60 My mouse worked fine under windows 95 as yours did. Under Win95 the mouse port was reported to be on int 12 which was what freebsd expected it to be. The mouse had worked when I installed FreeBSD originally so I suspected it was something I had changed. The only thing I could think of was a BIOS upgrade so I rolled back the BIOS to P08 and everything started working! Then I rolled it forward to the current version P09 and it still worked! The BIOS changes caused the CMOS memory to get cleared and caused the system to re-run the Plug and Play doobie so perhaps this is what fixed it. I also had another problem with the machine. I was constantly getting silo over flows when using my modem. The best transfer rate I could get was about 3K a second. At this point a silo overflow would occurr and a packet would get dropped and the TCP stack would drop back its transfer rate. I had to set my modem port to 38400 and even then I would have the occasional over flow under heavy load. This BIOS down-up-grade fixed this problem as well! I can now run the 56K modem at 115200 bps with not a single overflow. Transfering some text files using the modem compression ran the comm port up to the 115200 limit with no problems. Under windows 95 the modem would work with the default settings but if you moved the buffer size sliders up to maximum then a similar problem would happen just the windows just silently dropped the packets and no error was reported. Thanks again for posting to the mailing list. Without your e-mail I am sure I would have never worked out what the problem was. - --- Tony Jago, Systems Programmer, E-Mail: T.Jago@prentice.uq.edu.au Facilities Management Services, Phone: +61 7 3365 4078 Prentice Centre, The University of Fax: +61 7 3365 4477 Queensland. Yes, get apsfilter which uses ghostscript and various filters to translate just about anything you print (like gzip gifs for example :) into something your printer can manage. Pull down one of the latest version and see what it supports. An Epson Stylus Pro XL+ delivers good performance (with Sparc IPX doin the conversion) and reasonable output. A native postscript printer is better of course, as is a decent networked printer. In the networked ones, try QMS. HP I wouldn't because they seem to have trouble getting the basic system right, as in if you see text print it as text instead of locking up soldily (once in a while). > > I'm looking to buy a printer and was wondering what some of the better color > > printers were that are compatible to FreeBSD and windows? > > > > Get a postscript color printer. I've been using Exabyte drives on various systems since about the time Sun started offering them. In my experience, they are highly reliable and have excellent transfer performance. A couple of years ago I started working for myself. My systems in my home office grew too large for the surplus QIC-150 tape that I had been using; so I investigated the available tape backup options. Since it is coming out of my own pocket, price was a factor. Even a refurbished Exabyte was noticably more expensive than a Travan. BUT it makes up for it in cartridge costs. Travan cartridges were running $40 each as compared to $9 to $13 for an 8mm data cartridge. For a one month cycle of daily backups, the difference in cartridge price alone paid for a refurbished Exabyte 8505. (And I get the performance and reliability advantages.) DLT probably offers even better reliability and performance; but both drive and cartridges are more expensive. Exabyte 8mm seems to be the best compromise. On the other hand, if you need an auto-changer; the Exabyte systems are significantly more expensive than some of the DAT systems. (And physically larger.) But their multi-tape systems offer options like multiple drives sharing a single collection of tapes and a laser bar-code scanner for positive cartridge id. > If somebody uses a similar system on -STABLE, I would be very > glad if he/she could drop me a short note telling me what > he has got. Did anyone do this? It should be possible in theory, but I anticipate serious problems in practice. You would have to make sure that you always used the slice specific disk device names and never the "compatibility" slice. For example, your fstab would have to specify one of /dev/sd0s{1,2,3,4}f instead of /dev/sd0f. I am not sure how you would manage slice selection during bootstrap, selecting the initial swap partition, and initial mounting of the root file system. I would worry about disk utilities (such as the disklabel program) always doing the right thing. I would worry about the FreeBSD installation process always using the specified slice. I guess I would worry a lot, but it might just work. (good luck!) Dan Strick dan@math.berkeley.edu P.S. It might be a lot easier to buy a second disk. Disks are cheap these days (though not as cheap as my management). I'm trying my best to get a pppd connectoin to function and never thought I'd have this many problems. Here is what I have done and where I am at: I installed with the PAO install disk, based on ftp downloaded files from the freeBSD ftp pages. It immediately found my cards and recognized the modem. The other card, a 3Com Combo card, it couldn't match and listed as an 'unsupported card'. I edited rc.conf to include PCMCIA, setting it to "YES" I created a pccard.conf and used the CIRRUS LOGIC, FAX MODEM definition that was in the pccard.conf.sample based upon the card that the PAO disk found and which shows with every boot. I then created the two files required for a pppd connection using chat. Now, when I enter pppd, I get a 'device not configured'. I have tried the following devices: /dev/cuaa0 /dev/cuaa1 /dev/cuaa2 /dev/cuaa3 (thinking, well, Win95 see it as comm4) /dev/card1 (it's in the 2nd card slot) /dev/xp1 (what it calls in boot when it sees the card) Now if someone could please help me answer this question, I would be extraordinarily greatfull. I'm not on the user list, so please send this back to my e-mail address. I've been through the PAO site and the FreeBSD site and if it is something simple, I'm just not understanding it.
