I've used JServ successfully with FreeBSD, and I've even made a few notes for myself on how to do it, which I include below. There is a mistake in these notes (just to keep you on your toes), as I forgot to include a step, but it's pretty obvious what it is when you get to it (and I've forgotten what it is, so I can't put it back in. If anyone tries this, can they mail me so I can update my notes?) Anyway, I've not taken JServ much beyond this, so I can't comment on how it copes with more complex servlets, but it certainly seems to do its basic job. My notes are as follows: Add GNU make package (or port) Install JDK 1.1.5 in /usr/local/jdk1.1.5 (Add /usr/local/jdk1.1.5/bin to $PATH for all relevant users (root+me)) Install jserv sources into /usr/local/src/jserv Install Apache port into /usr/ports/www/apache cd /usr/ports/www/apache make patch cd work/apache_1.2.4/src cp /usr/local/src/jserv/jserv0.9.10/mod_jserv.c . chmod 644 mod_jserv.c add the following to file "Configuration" (as first module): Module jserv_module mod_jserv.o make install edit /usr/local/etc/apache/httpd.conf and add: ---- SNIP ---- ServerName "whatever@wherever" # JSERV Settings # # ServletBinary: location of the java interpreter ServletBinary /usr/local/jdk1.1.5/bin/java # ServletBinaryArgument: arguments for the java interpreter. # Example sets start and maximum heap sizes. #ServletBinaryArgument -ms8m -mx16m # ServletClassPath: locations where classes required by the servlets # reside. For example, I downloaded the Java Activator and JavaMail API's this weekend and the work fine. > Coordinating efforts on the extension APIs could > help promote Java on FreeBSD. No need to co-ordinate efforts, unless people are developing different API's than already exist. And, if so, co-ordinating them inside the Java community would be better than limiting it to the FreeBSD users. I downloaded jserv0.9.10 and apache-current ans compiled the stuff under 2.2.5-R. Well, what I can say so far: I have an apache 1.3b5 httpd running with servlet support enabled. It spans the java interpreter as it seems but I'm still unable to make the server find the classes: /var/log/servlets-errors.log: Can't find class org.apache.jserv.JServHandler Can't find class org.apache.jserv.JServHandler Can't find class org.apache.jserv.JServHandler Besides this I'm getting bunches of these: /var/log/httpd-errors.log: httpd in free(): warning: junk pointer, too high to make sense. httpd in free(): warning: junk pointer, too high to make sense. httpd in free(): warning: junk pointer, too high to make sense. (maybe a consequence of the classes not being found - hope so at least) What is the ServerName btw.? I don't think there is an 'official standard' place, but I stick it in /usr/local myself. I don't think it belongs in share, since the binaries/libraries are not sharable, and even the class files are not sharable on all architectures due to some (bogus) changes Sun made on Solaris. :( Nate To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Tue Mar 31 22:03:43 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id WAA18169 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Tue, 31 Mar 1998 22:03:43 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from prime.arces.net (gateway.arces.net [206.124.14.241]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id WAA17923 for ; Tue, 31 Mar 1998 22:01:20 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from monachus@prime.arces.net) Received: (from monachus@localhost) by prime.arces.net (8.8.8/8.8.nospam) id XAA06011; Tue, 31 Mar 1998 23:00:57 -0700 (MST) Message-ID: <19980331230057.53075@arces.net> Date: Tue, 31 Mar 1998 23:00:57 -0700 From: Adrian Goins To: Christoph Kukulies Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: servlet capable server, jdk1.2beta? Thanks. A little bit too late :-). I'm in the Jserv game since a couple of days and I managed to get apache-current (1.3b5) running with Jserv0.9.10 so far. At least I have the server spawn the java interpreter with jserv (hope so) without errors anymore. Sorted out a buglet (?) in mod_jserv.c where a free(): junk pointer too high message was caused by httpd/mod_jserv.c (a free on a closed file pointer was made). What I'm now looking for is a html example to test the functionality. I mean, all the naming/aliasing stuff. What goes into what directories. what files (.html .jtml) etc. etc. > > -- > Regards, > > Adrian Goins - admin@arces.net > Arces Network, Inc. > http://www.arces.net > 719.282.8133 vox -- Chris Christoph P. Ah, nice to hear that you can confirm this. (monochrome icons) I still suspect it's an X Driver problem since it happens with NS 4.05 as well on my 24bpp XF86_SVGA with Matrox Millenium (I). (the Matrox Mill support is in the SVGA driver). Do you use the SVGA driver as well? When I run NS 4.04 under XFree86 with the XF86_S3 server in 24bpp mode none of these problems (java console crash, monochrome icons) are showing up. The former is a Amd586/DX4/133 on ASUS SP3G,matrox millenium I, 64 MB, the latter a P5/233 with Elsa Gloria (S3-968). > > Charles Sprickman > spork@super-g.com > ---- > "I'm not a prophet or a stone-age man > Just a mortal with potential of a superman > I'm living on" -DB > > On Fri, 3 Apr 1998, Christoph Kukulies wrote: > > > My netscape 4.04 is still dying when I'm clicking the > > java console or java is started by hitting some > > java web page (www.javasoft.com). > > > > Anyone out there running the same configuration and can confirm this? > > (FreeBSD-2.2.5R, XFree86-331/XF86_SVGA, Matrox Millenium 4MB, 1280x1024) > > > > > > -- > > Chris Christoph P. There are a lot of issues but none addresses problems with 24bpp (which I thought to be the 'natural' truecolor mode since this is 3x8 giving 8 bits/color, or 2^24 colors. Going to 32pp confines me to run <= 1024x768 but I prefer 1280x1024. OK, for the record: Running in 1024x768 and 32pp 'fixes' the problem with netscape 4.0[45] and Matrox Millenium MGA. > > > At 11:33 PM 4/3/98 -0500, spork wrote: > >By any chance are you running 24 bit color?
