I have an NCR 53c875 based card, two IBM DCAS-34330UW's doing ccd and a NEC 16X SCSI CDROM drive. I wouldn't *want* to lose data on this machine if something with CAM went wrong, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if I did. I'd rather see CAM working in -stable, so if I ever have to re-install from scratch, so be it. :-) -- Chris Dillon --- cdillon@inter-linc.net --- cdillon@wolves.k12.mo.us /* Powered by FreeBSD, the best operating system on the planet. Hmm, dunno really, they seem to be created equal, but we'll see about that when I get the driver done. It will be rudimentary at first, and kludged onto our current atapi driver subsytem, a rewrite of that will follow, but is a "somewhat" longer term solution.... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Søren Schmidt (sos@FreeBSD.org) FreeBSD Core Team Even more code to hack -- will it ever end .. I have seen some odd problems applying 030898 against the most-recent -CURRENT however (after John Dyson's recent fixes). Right now we're back on non-CAM as a consequence, although there are some systems here where CAM, when it is working, makes such a huge difference in performance that I will be seriously investigating it once another working snapshot set of patches is released. -- -- Karl Denninger (karl@MCS.Net)| MCSNet - Serving Chicagoland and Wisconsin http://www.mcs.net/ | T1's from $600 monthly / All Lines K56Flex/DOV | NEW! There is a tool called Ziptool available at: http://www.torque.net/linux-pp.html (Look in the Iomega Zip drive section) I am told that it compiles with little or no modifications under FreeBSD, and will work with Jaz drives as well. The directions tell the user how to apply this patch to a currently running system, however I have not yet been able to get FreeBSD on my system as the drivers on the boot floppy do not support this controller, and I can't see my SCSI hard disk. Currently, all of my drives are on my Adaptec controller, so I was wondering if anybody had any information on applying the cam software, or some other devices/patches to my boot floppy so that I can get the system to see the drive so that I can install FreeBSD (version I have is 2.2.5). You have, indeed, provided a complete, workable solution. I did see your earlier postings, but must have made a mistake when I attempted the procedure. scsiformat -w /dev/sd0 indeed wiped clean the R/O attribute. Using the /stand/sysinstall index entries for partition and for labeling, I have created a single partition successfully, and am now writing a new (1GB!) file system. My sincere thanks. I thought I'd consult the FreeBSD community, before making my purchase. I have the following questions: 1. Does this drive work OK with FreeBSD? Any weird behavior or other gotcha's that I should be aware of? 2. Will it work with an Adaptec AHA-2940AU PCI UltraSCSI (narrow) adapter? 3. Is anyone using this combo? How's it work? 4. (I figure I might as well ask this while I've got your attention) My source for this drive is someone posting in misc.forsale.*. Now, I usually have pretty good luck buying from the net (in fact, I have had no ripoffs to date), but this is primarily due to me carefully reading the ad, judging the person's character, etc. One of the "warning flags" that I look for is a "too good to be true" price, which usually means that the guy is trying to scam me by taking my money and not sending the drive. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what these units are worth these days, so I don't have a price to base this comparison on. The price I'm being offered is $150 for an unit that is (obviously) used but in working order. It is an external unit (i.e. in its own case). Is this about what I should expect? Would I be paying too much? Or would I be paying way too little for this drive? (danger will robinson!)? Hokay - I got impatient with crashes and shoehorned the older patch in. It wasn't too difficult, in fact there were only 8 files where the diffs didn't apply. Those I hand-merged. :-) One "make world" and one new kernel and... Right now, I am clobbering the test box. Obviously you want to know if I find bugs. Any other info that is useful to you? So far it looks good; bootup was a bit "noisy" - but I expect this from beta code. Regardless, SMP is still miserable here. I seem to have similar SCB hangs (that I mentioned earlier) running UP as well, although they are fairly rare. UP == UniProcessor? If so, would SCB explain why, with an adaptec 2940UW controller and SCB enabled, I'm seeing what *feel* like SCSI bus hangs? Where I can telnet to the machine, get the beginnings of the 'login', but no login prompt? Machine is still pingable and everything? My configure has the following lines: controller ahc0 options AHC_SCBPAGING_ENABLE options AHC_TAGENABLE options AHC_ALLOW_MEMIO And the system is running STABLE... IF the SCB should be removed, what about the other two? Any similar problems known with those? Thanks... Marc G.
