The easiest fix is to simply install the des distribution with /stand/sysinstall, remembering to pick a site that will allow you to export it if you're outside the United States and Canada (ftp.freebsd.org and ftp.internat.freebsd.org both fall into this category). I'd might be mistaken, but isn't ftp.freebsd.org = wcarchive.cdrom.com hosted in San Francisco? And that, I'd guess, would mean I'm not allowed to retrieve it from outside the US and Canada? Or has WC a general permit to export DES software? Could someone help with this. I would like to be able to do searches localy on my machine without connecting to the web just for a search on the mailing list. I have found I learn more from the lists than I do elsewhere and would like to do so without having to explode all the lists. Thanks Adam W. There is an interesting research oriented system called "mg" that provides an inverted file indexing where both the text and the index are compressed *and* there is a net performance gain in searching. However, it needs another layer of code on top to match the features of freewais. -john From owner-freebsd-www Thu Apr 30 06:17:12 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from daemon@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id GAA08038 for www-outgoing; Thu, 30 Apr 1998 06:17:12 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-www) Received: from grasshopper.n2mc.net (grasshopper.n2mc.net [209.136.150.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id GAA08020 for ; Thu, 30 Apr 1998 06:17:05 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from spr@sysconfig.com) Received: from debo (s195.cchat.com [205.148.236.195]) by grasshopper.n2mc.net (8.8.5/8.7.2) with SMTP id JAA25267 for ; Thu, 30 Apr 1998 09:20:07 -0400 (EDT) Received: by localhost with Microsoft MAPI; Thu, 30 Apr 1998 09:16:27 -0400 Message-ID: <01BD7418.A76E4220.spr@sysconfig.com> From: "Sean P. For general mirroring information, see www.freebsd.org/mirror.html...um, actually, contrary to what the page says, the rsync in the ports collection works so use that. I'll have to fix that page... For doing a translation, you want the web "source" files rather than the processed ones that the mirroring method described above gets you. Are you familiar with cvsup? You will want to use that to get the web source tree. The sup collection name is simply www. With the web source in hand, you will make an "id" subdirectory in the main web directory for your translation. See the ja_JP.EUC directory (which should eventually be renamed do just ja) for examples of how to do things. For "building" the web pages, you will need the jade, iso8879, html, docbook, linuxdoc, and sgmlformat ports from the textproc category. (The sgmlformat port depends on all the others so if you start with that, the others should magically get installed...) Once you have a translation worked out, then it can be checked into the main cvs repository and mirrored around the world. I'm sure you will have other questions along the way, so don't hesitate to ask. Subscribe to and use www@freebsd.org mailinglist. -john
