These patches are unofficial and no abuse should be directed towards the FreeBSD java porting team for them :). This new set (patchset 8) can be gotten from http://www.eyesbeyond.com/freebsd-jdk122-patches-8.tar.gz (this message is included in the tar ball as the file ANNOUNCEMENT). Note that the latest version of the patchset can always be gotten from http://www.eyesbeyond.com/freebsd-jdk122-patches-latest.tar.gz Please read the file THANKS for a list of the large number of people who should be thanked that things have gotten this far! The following ISSUES have been addressed since patchset 7 (see the ISSUES files for more details -- note that issues fixed since patchset 4 with no adverse affects reported have been removed). Issue 2. The JDK now almost runs correctly on FreeBSD 2.2.x thanks to Chuck Reiss and Nate Williams. That is to say, java and javac both appear to be working, but Nate is having some trouble with javadoc. Issue 15. Using 16 bpp colour depth is now supported. Additional problems that hadn't made it to the ISSUES list that have been addressed in this patchset: 1. Crashes with the *_g debugging executable (thanks to Chuck Reiss and Fuyuhiko Maruyama who independently sent fixes for this). 2. Fix a function in libawt.so that was causing crashes with the DitherTest applet (thanks to Fuyuhiko Maruyama). 3. Allow JITs to handle SIGSEGV. Needed by shuJIT, OpenJIT and Sun's JIT (thanks to Fuyuhiko Maruyama). 4. Really support extra locales (thanks to Shin'ya Kamabuchi for convincing me that the original fix I received was the right one, not the one I did for patchset 7). 5. Fix an integer type mismatch with javah (thanks to Fuyuhiko Maruyama). 6. Load the correct file encoding support (thanks to Shin'ya Kamabuchi). 7. Fix the socket reading bug (thanks to Shin'ya Kamabuchi). In addition to this, some more of the fixes from the released Linux JDK source code have been merged in (including the 16 bpp support mentioned above). You should notice some general improvements in graphical layout. For more information about the port, consult Kees Jan Koster's web pages at http://web.inter.nl.net/users/kjkoster/java/index.html Please test as much as possible! -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Mon May 22 6:26:13 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from seanreilly.com (seanreilly.com [206.161.139.100]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2583837B8D2 for ; Mon, 22 May 2000 06:26:06 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from sreilly@seanreilly.com) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by seanreilly.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id JAA05289; Mon, 22 May 2000 09:45:02 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from sreilly@seanreilly.com) Date: Mon, 22 May 2000 09:45:02 -0400 (EDT) From: Sean Reilly To: Nate Williams Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: problem in 1.1.8 In-Reply-To: <200005191347.HAA02977@nomad.yogotech.com> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Fri, 19 May 2000, Nate Williams wrote: > > It seems like the deadlock is between something in the > > X11Graphics.finalize() method in the main thread and the > > LightweightDispatcher.dispatchEvent() method in the AWT-EventQueue-0 > > thread. It's really beginning to work at 16bpp. None of the demo applets dumps core any more. Some funny things still happen though: The Animator applet ex. 1 and 3 don't display anything when started locally (from nfs), but work when viewed remotely. On the local version the Image appears on places where another window is dragged over it. Same for MoleculeViewer, JumpingBox etc. (display of Images) [NervousText is very slow (on local display)] "Start: applet not initialized" is displayed always, even when everything is working fine. sound still doesn't work jfc/SwingSet is working completely (remote display of course) martin To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Tue May 23 4:31:12 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from ilsa.franken.de (ilsa.franken.de [193.175.24.42]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4262937B54E for ; Tue, 23 May 2000 04:31:09 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from scratchy@VULCAN.franken.de) Received: by ilsa.franken.de (Smail3.2 #1) id m12uCtl-000VJMC; Tue, 23 May 2000 13:30:57 +0200 (CEST) Received: from vulcan.franken.de(194.94.248.10) via SMTP by ilsa.franken.de, id smtpda32283; Tue May 23 13:30:47 2000 Received: from yavin.franken.de (yavin.franken.de [194.94.248.13]) by vulcan.franken.de (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id NAA40469 for ; Tue, 23 May 2000 13:28:41 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from scratchy@yavin.franken.de) Received: from yavin.franken.de (localhost.franken.de [127.0.0.1]) by yavin.franken.de (8.9.3/8.9.2) with ESMTP id NAA86747 for ; Tue, 23 May 2000 13:28:41 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from scratchy@yavin.franken.de) Message-Id: <200005231128.NAA86747@yavin.franken.de> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.1.1 10/15/1999 To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Bug report for patchset 8 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Tue, 23 May 2000 13:28:41 +0200 From: Volker Paepcke Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi! I think I've found a bug in patchset 8: After successfully installing and running Forte4J it seems to work very stable except some redraw problems in the menus. I think this is a known problem (I'm using Lesstif)!? The default font.properties is unusable, because the fonts have wrong metrics (The size seems to be correct but there is extra space above and below the characters). Installing the URW fonts with the correspoding font.propteries worked for me. And here comes the bug: all external programm execution doesn't work! e.g. compiling with jikes or running cvs commands. The external programm terminates but the IDE is waiting forever. I've written a small program that reproduces this problem: import java.io.*; public class ExecTest { public static void main(String args[]) { try { Process proc = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(new String[] { "date" }); proc.waitFor(); } catch (Exception ex) { ex.printStackTrace(); } } } the call to waitFor() never returns. With the JDK 1.1.8 and Blackdown's RC4 the waitFor() call is returning immediatly. I'm running FreeBSD 4.0-Stable. Aside from this all my self-written programms are working fine!!! I'm heavily using JDBC, RMI, JAI, CORBA (ORBacus) and many threads (but no calls to waitFor)... FONTS: The initial font.properties file is unusable. I converted to using the one supplied from Robert Swindells (since it was handy) and everything looks much better, perhaps his should be the default? The 'Blackdown-like' one could be supplied but marked as such. What is the issue with using Robert's that caused the patchset to switch to blackdown in patchset 6? FYI: I've also been testing this on another FreeBSD 3.4-RELEASE box which is stripped (virtually nothing but the OS on it, Linux compat & java). Patchset 6 I ran a non-gui server type application on it no prob. I tested with patchset 8 and java would only crash with an unresolved external that indicated I needed to install lesstif on the machine. I did and now everything is working fine. My Question - Is having some kind of 'lesstif/motif' installed going to be a requirement to run the native FreeBSD java? There were two things here: (a) The code was merged with that in the Java porting team's CVS repository. They were using the current font.properties. (b) Robert's font.properties doesn't work for me (XFree86 3.3.3.1), so I was unsure that it was working for others. Are the URW fonts standard with later versions of XFree86 or do they need to be installed separately? Can you please define "unusable" in terms of the current fonts? They should be no more unusable than those in the Blackdown port which can be run under emulation. > FYI: > I've also been testing this on another FreeBSD 3.4-RELEASE box > which is stripped (virtually nothing but the OS on it, Linux compat & > java). > Patchset 6 I ran a non-gui server type application on it no prob. > I tested with patchset 8 and java would only crash with an unresolved > external that indicated I needed to install lesstif on the machine. Jeremy, if you want a version of the JDK you can install, make the 'release-images' target rather than the 'world' target. This will create some extra directories containing verrsions of the JDK or JRE. Look in the BUILD-RELEASE file for the exact directory names. As for your display problems, please make sure you are using patchset 8. The behaviour you are getting sounds like the behaviour for previous patchsets. Once you've done that, if the problems are still occurring then please post the following details about the machine the _display_ is on: Operating System, X version, Motif library details and Colour Display Depth. Java 1.2.2 patchset 8 _seems_ stable with Apache (1.3.12) and Tomcat 3.1 (Servlet2.2/JSP1.1) and Cocoon 1.7.2. I tested more with Cocoon than JSP at this point, since much of my JSP pages go against a database (postgresql) I'll also be testing the JDBC2.0 postgresql driver with this patchset release, which I haven't used yet. (Has other people testing the postgresql JDBC2.0 driver with this patch release? reactions?) For those who don't use postgresql, it comes with two JDBC drivers, a JDBC1.0 and JDBC2.0 version. When you compile the drivers via it's makefile, it will make a 1.0 driver if you use jdk1.1.x, and a 2.0 driver with jdk1.2.x. As I get results, I'll post them. The linux-jdk port as well as the native one with patchset 8, can't find the fonts in the default font.properties. Robert's file works fine, as long as you get the URW fonts and install them. I think that ultimately we could either make the 1.2.2 jdk depend on the URW fonts, or use the ones from 1.1.8. Actually, I tried that but they couldn't be found either. Dunno why... BTW, JDBC Explorer from JBuilder works like a charm, but JBuilder itself doesn't. I think it must be those tools.jar & jpda.jar files it uses. -past To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed May 24 3:16:54 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au [129.127.246.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8089D37BC14 for ; Wed, 24 May 2000 03:16:49 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from glewis@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au) Received: (from glewis@localhost) by ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (8.9.3/8.9.3) id TAA28101; Wed, 24 May 2000 19:46:38 +0930 (CST) (envelope-from glewis) From: Greg Lewis Message-Id: <200005241016.TAA28101@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au> Subject: Re: Java 3D In-Reply-To: from Martin Dieringer at "May 24, 2000 11:10:56 am" To: Martin Dieringer Date: Wed, 24 May 2000 19:46:38 +0930 (CST) Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL70 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Martin Dieringer wrote: > now that jdk 1.2 is on the way, what about java 3d? > I didn't see source code available, but blackdown have made a linux port. > Do you think there is any chance to get the source code and compile it? > > martin Blackdown have a Linux port as they have access to the source code from Sun. Any Java3D port for FreeBSD pretty much relies on Sun either releasing the source code or allowing the FreeBSD porting team access to it. I think I'll stick with them for now. It sounds like the two font.properties are both useful to different folk. At this stage I think the right thing to do is to retain them both, but put some more prominent information on using Robert's version and/or possibly make a compilation switch to use them. > Place the jpda.jar and dt.jar files from the > Linux RC4 distro into the same place in the FreeBSD distro > (/lib>) and Jbuilder will work. Thanks Rob! I can't see putting them in the patchset as that would bloat it fairly significantly but again it sounds like some information about JBuilder and jpda.jar is needed. I'd suggest jpda.jar should definitely go into any binary release though. -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Thu May 25 14:55:23 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au [129.127.246.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D8B2D37B5E9 for ; Thu, 25 May 2000 14:55:16 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from glewis@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au) Received: (from glewis@localhost) by ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (8.9.3/8.9.3) id HAA61802; Fri, 26 May 2000 07:24:26 +0930 (CST) (envelope-from glewis) From: Greg Lewis Message-Id: <200005252154.HAA61802@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au> Subject: Re: Patchset 8 fonts In-Reply-To: <20000524095907.352C837BC14@hub.freebsd.org> from Robert Swindells at "May 24, 2000 02:59:07 am" To: rjs@fdy2.demon.co.uk Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 07:24:26 +0930 (CST) Cc: glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au, rcf@ox.com, freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL70 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Robert Swindells wrote: > >(a) The code was merged with that in the Java porting team's CVS > > repository. Since both font.properties work for different people, it must mean that people somehow have the respective fonts installed in their systems. In my system initially none of the two font.properties worked, that is why I had to download the URW fonts. Those of you who were ok with the default (Blackdown's, Sun's or Greg's - which one is it?) font.properties, did you get those fonts from somewhere special? Have you installed some specific software that installs fonts along its main installation? Candidates would be StarOffice, ApplixWare, etc. I have Gimp in my system, so that is out of the question. -past To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri May 26 2: 7:36 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au [129.127.246.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 871E237B816 for ; Fri, 26 May 2000 02:07:32 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from glewis@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au) Received: (from glewis@localhost) by ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (8.9.3/8.9.3) id SAA72072; Fri, 26 May 2000 18:37:02 +0930 (CST) (envelope-from glewis) From: Greg Lewis Message-Id: <200005260907.SAA72072@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au> Subject: Re: Fixing Jbuilder 3.5 In-Reply-To: <20000526111950.B13208@netmode.ece.ntua.gr> from Panagiotis Astithas at "May 26, 2000 11:19:50 am" To: past@netmode.ntua.gr Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 18:37:02 +0930 (CST) Cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL70 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Panagiotis Astithas wrote: > Since both font.properties work for different people, it must mean that > people somehow have the respective fonts installed in their systems. See share/lib/fonts/. These are TrueType fonts though. Robert suggests you may need a TrueType font server (e.g. xfsft) for them to be useful, but I'm pretty sure I'm not running a TrueType font server and they appear to just work for me. I'm still going to install the URW fonts and give them a go though :). P.S. the default font.properties is from the FreeBSD Java porting team. Its based on the Solaris 5.5.1 font.properties that is in the standard JDK 1.2.2 source if I remember correctly. -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri May 26 2:39:42 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from dire.bris.ac.uk (dire.bris.ac.uk [137.222.10.60]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7772B37B993 for ; Fri, 26 May 2000 02:39:40 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from Jan.Grant@bristol.ac.uk) Received: from mail.ilrt.bris.ac.uk by dire.bris.ac.uk with SMTP-PRIV with ESMTP; Fri, 26 May 2000 10:39:38 +0100 Received: from localhost (cmjg@localhost) by mail.ilrt.bris.ac.uk (8.8.7/8.8.8) with ESMTP id KAA20447; Fri, 26 May 2000 10:39:37 +0100 (BST) Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 10:39:37 +0100 (BST) From: Jan Grant To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: OpenJIT - results with patchset 8 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On your porting page: "There are some reports that you may have to replace uses of int32_t with jint before OpenJIT can be build properly. I have exactly the same versions of the software that you mention. I haven't experienced yet any core dumps. For instance, the Clock demo applet works fine. Hmm, just had a look: classic VM using kernel threads in the prerelease version; I'm not sure if FBSD's linux emulation will like it. What were the changes you had to do for > OpenJIT to build & install (the patch you mentioned was not in your > message)? Sorry, patch *really* in the message this time. Two things: 1) I had to change a int_8 to a char in a header file to be compatible with api.c. 2) The OpenJIT makefile wants to install in JAVA_HOME/jre/{lib/i386|classes}. After a make world for the Java JDK - the standard 1.2.2 source from Sun's site + patchset 8 for FreeBSD - I end up with a java installation in build/freebsd - there is no jre directory there. So I removed the jre from the installation directories for OpenJIT. Peter Here's the patch for changing the int to a char: *** CClassHeaders/org_OpenJIT_Compile.h.orig Fri May 26 14:47:38 2000 --- CClassHeaders/org_OpenJIT_Compile.h Fri May 26 14:47:52 2000 *************** *** 168,174 **** extern int32_t org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolAccess(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); extern HArrayOfByte *org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolClass0(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); extern int32_t org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolFieldAddress(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); ! extern int8_t org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolFieldDescriptor(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); extern int32_t org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolFieldOffset(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); extern HArrayOfByte *org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolMethodDescriptor(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); extern HArrayOfByte *org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolName0(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); --- 168,174 ---- extern int32_t org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolAccess(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); extern HArrayOfByte *org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolClass0(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); extern int32_t org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolFieldAddress(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); ! extern char org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolFieldDescriptor(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); extern int32_t org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolFieldOffset(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); extern HArrayOfByte *org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolMethodDescriptor(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); extern HArrayOfByte *org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolName0(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *,int32_t); -- Peter van Heusden pvh@egenetics.com Electric Genetics To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri May 26 7:27:45 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from euromail1.genrad.com (x88.genrad.co.uk [195.99.3.88]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 62A6037BE41 for ; Fri, 26 May 2000 07:27:43 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from swindellsr@genrad.co.uk) Received: from CDP437 (cdp437.uk.genrad.com [132.223.135.120]) by euromail1.genrad.com with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.5.2448.0) id LBACQZDN; Fri, 26 May 2000 15:27:41 +0100 From: Robert Swindells To: pvh@egenetics.com Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG In-reply-to: (message from Peter van Heusden on Fri, 26 May 2000 16:13:49 +0200 (SAST)) Subject: Re: OpenJIT 1.1.12, JDK 1.2.2, FreeBSD 4.0-S crash Reply-To: rjs@fdy2.demon.co.uk Message-Id: <20000526142743.62A6037BE41@hub.freebsd.org> Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 07:27:43 -0700 (PDT) Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org >2) The OpenJIT makefile wants to install in >JAVA_HOME/jre/{lib/i386|classes}. For clarity here is how I managed to build it, (shout to Kees - here's your page update). Thanks to Jan Grant Panagiotis Astithas Peter van Heusden Building OpenJIT Steps: 1) Download OpenJIT-1.1.12 2) tar -zxvf OpenJIT-1.1.12.tar.gz 3) cd OpenJIT-1.1.12 2) ./configure --with-jdk=//jdk1.2.2preAlpha 3) gmake (will fail) 4) change line 171 in CClassHeaders/org_OpenJIT_Compile.h (2 changes) to: extern char org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolFieldDescriptor(struct Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *, jint); 5) gmake (success!) FYI: i) FreeBSD 3.4-RELEASE. ii) I make a 'release' image when I build my native jdk and install it into another directory as if I had downloaded it. If you do this the OpenJIT 'gmake install' works correctly. Any error messages > or irregular behaviour? What version of the linux port were you using? As I wrote about two weeks ago, I tried to get it running on relatively up-to-date 5.0-CURRENT. Alphaworks JVM uses native threads on Linux, which (as far as I understand) are impossible to have right now, either under Linux emulation or otherwise. The error message was: sigaltstack: Cannot allocate memory, which after looking up in the manpage led me to believe that perhaps Linux doesn't add MINSIGSTKSZ by default to the stack size. Added it to linuxulator in appropriate places (in linux_signal.c:linux_sigaltstack()), and it stopped complaining, but started eating 100% CPU. At which point I gave up... Obviously, the matter is more complicated than that - that is, it was shooting in the dark. I know I don't have kernel threads, I was just curious where it would bomb out.. :-) Andrzej Bialecki // WebGiro AB, Sweden (http://www.webgiro.com) // ------------------------------------------------------------------- // ------ FreeBSD: The Power to Serve. http://www.freebsd.org -------- // --- Small & Embedded FreeBSD: http://www.freebsd.org/~picobsd/ ---- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri May 26 14:28:13 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from hotmail.com (f44.law8.hotmail.com [216.33.241.44]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id AEB5237B5C9 for ; Fri, 26 May 2000 14:28:11 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jmd526@hotmail.com) Received: (qmail 6684 invoked by uid 0); 26 May 2000 21:28:11 -0000 Message-ID: <20000526212811.6683.qmail@hotmail.com> Received: from 209.220.228.2 by www.hotmail.com with HTTP; Fri, 26 May 2000 14:28:11 PDT X-Originating-IP: [209.220.228.2] From: "John Daniels" To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Java IDEs Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 17:28:11 EDT Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I should have mentioned that I intend to use the IDB with FreeBSD native JDK 1.2.2 (patchset 8 and future patchsets). So I would like information only on IDEs that will run under FreeBSD (preferably native). Inprise claims that JBuilder is built entirely in pure Java for portability, but they have only released a Windows, Linux and Solaris version so far. Wouldn't it be therefore be possiblem, and not too difficult to make JBuilder Foundation a port to run (native) under FreeBSD? I have a good friend at Inprise, and I would try my hand at making a port (possibly with Inprise help) if anyone thinks that that would be useful. I looked at the JBuilder website and there are 3 versions: Foundation (free), Professional ($799), and Enterprise ($2,500). Similarly, Sun is releasing Forte for Java Community Edition (free), and plans to release an Internet Edition and Enterprise Edition, which I assume will likely be priced like Inprise's JBuilder Professional and Enterprise, respectively. For both, EJB development seems to be mostly regulated to the high-end Enterprise products. IBM has a free "Entry Edition" of VisualAge for Java but from their website ( http://www7.software.ibm.com/vad.nsf/Data/Document2590 ) it seems that it is based on JDK 1.1.7. An "Early Adopters" Entry Edition IDE for JDK 1.2 is available only for Windows. Like Sun and Inprise, IBM also offers Professional and Enterprise editions. IBM offers no support for the the Entry Edition -- does Sun or Inprise have some support (via email?) Is there much difference between JBuilder Foundation, Forte Community Edition (leaving out IBM for the moment because of an apparent lack of JDK 1.2.2 support in their free IDE)? For example, both Inprise and Sun seem to reserve EJB development to the high-end Enterprise products. How easy is it to install these IDE's? I assume that they only run on FreeBSD under Linux emulation. Are there any other IDE's worth looking into? However, I've seen reports on the list recently of both Forte and JBuilder running with patchset 8. The only caveat was that you needed to install jpda.jar from the Blackdown JDK to get JBuilder running. YMMV. -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri May 26 16:46:21 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au [129.127.246.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 53A0D37B7F2 for ; Fri, 26 May 2000 16:46:15 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from glewis@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au) Received: (from glewis@localhost) by ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (8.9.3/8.9.3) id JAA79606; Sat, 27 May 2000 09:16:08 +0930 (CST) (envelope-from glewis) From: Greg Lewis Message-Id: <200005262346.JAA79606@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au> Subject: Re: OpenJIT - results with patchset 8 - Clear Steps to build it In-Reply-To: <20000526180612.B14457@netmode.ece.ntua.gr> from Panagiotis Astithas at "May 26, 2000 06:06:12 pm" To: past@netmode.ntua.gr Date: Sat, 27 May 2000 09:16:07 +0930 (CST) Cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL70 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Panagiotis Astithas wrote: > > 4) change line 171 in CClassHeaders/org_OpenJIT_Compile.h (2 changes) to: > > > > extern char org_OpenJIT_Compile_ConstantPoolFieldDescriptor(struct > > Horg_OpenJIT_Compile *, jint); > > Actually, as Peter van Heusden pointed out, you only need to make one change, > the return type of the function must be char. After some digging, my understanding is that IBM's _free_ IDE works with JDK 1.1.7 (and up?), but may not be up-to-date for 1.2, so I have kind of ruled that out (for now, anyway). IBM also expressly states that it's _free_ IDE has no support, whereas Forte and JBuilder seem to have more support possibilities. It seems that the best (only?) reason to go with IBM's IDE is if you know that you will want to use IBM solutions in the future: VisualAge Professional, Websphere, etc. So a good *free* IDE seems to be a choice between JBuilder and Forte. I would probably lean more towards Forte but Inprise *stresses* that JBuilder is built entirely in Java for portability, so I don't see why it couldn't be ported, without much difficulty, to FreeBSD. I'm not sure if a native port of an IDE would make any real difference, though. JBuilder Enterprise comes with an (EJB) application server, and running that natively might be a good thing - but I'm not sure that there is much demand for that (JBuilder Enterprise is over $2,000). Can you think of any reason why a native IDE would be better than running under Linux emulation? (beside it's being a little more speedy, maybe) If there is a good reason, I can talk to my friend at Inprise (who has been there for >8years) and see if a native port would be possible.
