I'm ran ifconfig media 10baseT/UTP on my laptop (needed to be in 10mbit mode, long story, irrelevant to this tale) and noticed the dongle still showed 100mbit. Tried going out and got continuous watchdog timeout warnings from the kernel. I could live with this, but, and this is the kicker, in order to get the card reinitialized to a working state, I had to restart the machine in Win2k. Removing and reinserting the card didn't work, cold reboot into FBSD didn't work. I was pretty amazed. I was glad W2k fixed it. I was actually glad I had W2k available. I then rebooted the machine back to FreeBSD, as I wasn't that glad. The actual card in question is and Intel PRO/100 PC Card, FreeBSD is 4.3-R, machine is Dell Latitude C800. The target connections are instruments that we can 'tip' to. Candidates are PCMCIA adapters (eg Quatech QSP-100), USB adapters (eg Keyspan, Comtrol Rocketport USB serial hub), or ethernet (eg Comtrol Rocketport ethernet serial hub, NPort server lite/pro). My preference is an ethernet adapter, since this sounds like it may be the easiest and most portable to use, though I have no idea how they work. Do you telnet them and then select a serial port to connect to, or do they use proprietary TCP/IP protocols and programs, or ??? Any advice or experience with any of these devices is appreciated; I'm running FBSD 4.3 (and not really interested in changing to -CURRENT, though I'm willing to back-hack anything that works). You can use access device like "Livingston Portmaster 2" with 10/20/30 RS-232 ports. So you put on your bsd in.pmd in /etc/inetd.conf, configure portmaster to use your laptop (or other bsd/linux box) as host for ports you need and connect portmaster and laptop with regular ethernet. After it, On bsd box you have number of pseudo-ttys (/dev/ttyr0, ttyr1 or so) connected to RS-232 ports, modem controls (like DTR or setting port speed) will work. Only problem - it is size of portmaster (large enough to fit 30 RS-232 DB25 connectors). This is a known working configuration. Hmm, I was hit by Murphy: When turning to "No" again to get the dmesg for you, it worked again. After some debugging, I found out that the OSS driver (which set the MIDI port to 0x300, where the ed driver attached the NIC as well) was the problem, and this even lasted during soft reboots. Strangely enough, someone else did report a similar problem a few weeks ago. As I recall, they had two (supposedly) identical cards, one of which started behaving differently after it had been using Win2K or FreeBSD (I forget which). AFAIK, the Intel & Compaq xe cards are just a Xircom in a different wrapper so the same behaviour should exist with all of them. However, I didn't think there was any configurable state in there that would survive power cycling... except maybe the MAC address, I guess. How long did you eject it for? I'm starting to be convinced - from other conversations I've had lately - that there's some fundamental flaw in the way the xe driver initialises the card. This could be the real reason that autonegotiation doesn't always work, it could explain these really weird behaviours too -- perhaps the flawed init procedure is screwing up the card in some way such that it's really hard to unscrew it :-) I've been talking to a few other people who are looking at various prblems with the xe driver, including this intialisation thing; hopefully there will be some answers soon. At least you found something that Win2K is good for, though. I am who reported that similar problem. The other "OS" ;-) is WinMe. The odd thing here is that we have two Xircom RE-100 (CE3-10/100) cards with different behavior: the old card (~18 months old) works fine under both Windows (Xircom driver version 2.05) and FreeBSD; however, the new card suffers from negotiation problems under FreeBSD (even when rebooted after Windows). We did a small test, installing another (older) version of the Xircom's Windows driver, and surprisingly the card showed a different behavior under FreeBSD (in fact, the negotiation problems went worse). Then, we reinstalled the latest Xircom's Windows driver (v2.05), rebooted FreeBSD, and we saw the original negotiation problems. Conclusion: the Xircom's Windows driver does "something" with the card which survives the initialization perfomed by xe(4). I told the owner of the problem card that he should define XE_DEBUG, but now he is on vacation. > AFAIK, the Intel & Compaq xe cards are just a Xircom in a different wrapper > so the same behaviour should exist with all of them. However, I didn't > think there was any configurable state in there that would survive power > cycling... except maybe the MAC address, I guess. How long did you eject > it for? I read the Xircom technical docs, and according to that information almost nothing should survive a hardware reset. And the xe driver _does_ a hardware reset. If you have a PCI cardbus bridge, you will notice two things. 1) We now automatically assign the IRQ now for the management interrupt for PCI devices. This means that you cannot set it. We will also share this interrupt with other PCI devices. We will use the same interrupt for the pccards, and sharing there is OK. 2) You cannot use polling mode on PCI devices. Please let me know if your setup was working before and now isn't working. I've tested this for the past two months before merging this into -stable. I suspect that there will be some problems, but I know of only a few minor problems with the code. I think it is better than the old code. Oh, yea, we also support the orinoco PCI cards that everyone keeps asking about :-) Warner To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Wed Aug 15 0:21: 3 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from vbook.express.ru (vbook.express.ru [212.24.37.106]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BD32637B401 for ; Wed, 15 Aug 2001 00:20:53 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from vova@express.ru) Received: from vova by vbook.express.ru with local (Exim 3.31 #2) id 15WsKW-000K48-00; Wed, 15 Aug 2001 08:30:56 +0400 From: "Vladimir B. There is no ACPI support in -stable. I don't think it's even working correctly in -current yet. ACPI is a nasty beast, you have to get the entire spec implemented before any part of it really works. It's big and it's nasty and it's not supported by FreeBSD at this time. For my i5000e, suspend/resume works (both with the lid switch and the Fn-Esc suspend key). The power button invokes a shutdown -p now.. the CPU throttling when the AC adapter is removed works, as well as battery status and temperature status. Unfortunately the fans don't work right on the Dell machines. (I.e., when we try to turn fans on or off the OS is ignored.. although the BIOS seems to still dink with them in the background.) -- John Baldwin -- http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ PGP Key: http://www.baldwin.cx/~john/pgpkey.asc "Power Users Use the Power to Serve!" - http://www.FreeBSD.org/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Wed Aug 15 10:30: 7 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from ptavv.es.net (ptavv.es.net [198.128.4.29]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 67FA037B412 for ; Wed, 15 Aug 2001 10:30:04 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from oberman@ptavv.es.net) Received: from ptavv.es.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by ptavv.es.net (8.10.1/8.10.1) with ESMTP id f7FHU0R30909; Wed, 15 Aug 2001 10:30:00 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <200108151730.f7FHU0R30909@ptavv.es.net> To: parv Cc: f-mobile Subject: Re: dell i5000e & apm In-reply-to: Your message of "Wed, 15 Aug 2001 10:04:12 EDT." <20010815100412.A4450@moo.holy.cow> Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2001 10:30:00 -0700 From: "Kevin Oberman" Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2001 10:04:12 -0400 > From: parv > Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG > > it has been long tome since i posted here... > > is there a soul here who knows if freebsd 4-stable on dell inspiron > 5000e can survive more than one "stand by/suspend" cycles, measured in > minutes, w/o hard reboots? > > last time i tried, when dell issued an bios-apm update, around may 6 > 2001 w/ then current 4-stable version, the exercise was in futility. I'm very suspicious that this laptop has a bug in it's BIOS. My wife has one of these running Windows (not sure the flavor, but it came installed on the 5000e) and it has the same problem: the machine fails to resume from suspend quite often. Worse, you often have to pull the battery before you can get it to re-boot. So I'm not too sure that this is a FreeBSD issue. You might check the Dell web-site for possible BIOS upgrades. OK; I finally got a chance to try this on my laptop (which is quite similar to a Dell I5000e), and it seems to work just fine: I used Fn+Esc to suspend (to RAM; I don't have suspend-to-disk set up), waited a while, then tapped the power button to wake it up. I didn't even need to do anything with Fn+F8. I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but on my T20, it now hangs with the card in it. Even if I eject the card, the box stays hung, and requires a power-cycle to get it going again. Also, as soon as I insert the card into the box, it's locks up the box. A kernel made before these changes (late last week) does not exhibit the boot and insertion hangs. In the good news front, the mini-PCI ethernet card that is built-in to the box works fine still (no change). Let me rephrase this by saying 'it now hangs at boot time if a PCCARD is inserted in the box'. > Even if I eject the card, the box stays hung, and > requires a power-cycle to get it going again. Also, as soon as I insert > the card into the box, it's locks up the box. A kernel made before > these changes (late last week) does not exhibit the boot and insertion > hangs. However, that box doesn't recognize the cards. I just got the box built last week, and haven't had time to mess with the PCCARD stuff. I'm not sure what's up with that, but I'll try to debug it. (The card is definitely a PCCARD (not CardBus), as it works fine on a 2.2.8 box on using a similar laptop.) My Z505JE works just fine. I don't believe these two VAIOs are terribly different. You might try pnp-os yes in the BIOS (the USB controller will work with today's cvsup). THe ethernet card works fine as well. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- pcic1: Event mask 0xa pcic1: Event mask 0x2 pcic1: Event mask 0x6 pcic1: debounced state is 0x30000510 pccard: card inserted, slot 1 pcic1: Event mask 0x9 Aug 16 08:18:11 dt pccardd[1289]: Card "Psion Dacom"("Gold Card Global 56K+Fax") [56K+Fax] [V8.25] matched "Psion Dacom" ("Gold Card Global 56K+Fax") [(null)] [(null)] ### after a couple of seconds it freezes ### ejecting the card and it continues with sio4 at port 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 11 slot 1 on pccard1 sio4: typepcic1: Event mask 0x6 16550A Aug 16 08:18:23 dt pccardd[1289]: sio4: Psion Dacom (Gold Card Global 56K+Fax) inserted. pcic1: debounced state is 0x30000116 sio4: unloaded sio4: detached pccard: card removed, slot 1 Aug 16 08:18:23 dt pccardd[1289]: sio4: Psion Dacom (Gold Card Global 56K+Fax) removed. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The last thing it does is print (on console in bold) is the 'sio4: ' line The typepcic1 come after ejecting.
