Here's a list of reasons why we are currently analysing this option: o filesystem snapshots o SMART Support (ATA disk monitoring and early warning) o fast background fsck o SATA support o pf o more recent IPsec (probably usable, it wasn't in 4.10) o jails: icmp, multi-ip support o new features in the ports o better threads (unsure, how much better?) o SMP/HTT support improved (unsure, how much -- we have crashes on some 4.10 systems?) o Changes in the networking code as described in http://people.freebsd.org/~andre/FreeBSD-5.3-Networking.pdf We're not migrating any production system right now, but we've installed two reference server (which will be used as baseline for other 5.3/5.x systems). -- MfG/Best regards, Kurt Jaeger 16 years to go ! Hello I did a clean install of our one mail server's here to see, it was running 4.10. I redid the box over ie a clean install now it has fallen over three times since Saturday 0200. I can't fathom why either. I have decided that if it crashes again today Sunday I will go back to 4.10 that at least worked fine. The second thing I have noticed on a firewall we also redid to take advantage of the new ipfw is that the forward rule does not work. That server is running just fine no falling over it does nothing other than being a dedicated firewall. The only thing is the fwd rule just does not work. This has made me very weary to change any more servers over to 5.3 for now. Can you reproduce the crashes (even on 4-stable)? Do you have backtraces? If not: the handbook tells how to obtain one. If you need help to obtain one I'm willing to help (I'm working in Esslingen at least until the end of the year). Regarding HTT: it's only beneficial for special workloads. If you have multiple processes with the same workload which want to use the CPU at the same time, it may be better to disable HTT (we have numbers for MySQL which suggest to disable HTT at least for the benchmark workload). If you mix integer workload with floating-point workload, it should be beneficial to enable HTT. But you should test it instead of blindly following the suggestions. :-) Regarding SMPng: for some workloads we're faster than 4.x, for some we aren't. Do any of you guys have any experience building embedded systems, like homemade routers, or anything like that? I was wondering where I could find some good information. I have the "Embedded Freebsd Cook Book," however, I am just beginning programming, and have no idea how to empliment the "out-of-context" mixed explanations about the patches that the auther mentions. Where can I find a good book about Freebsd kernel programming? I am ordering the C book that was written in like the 70's and some other books, however, I just wanted some functional knowledge, instead of having to wait until I get to page 300 and whatever, before I could truely understand the 100 and whatever page cook book. And also, do any of you do anything with hosting Voice Over IP, or just Internet Telephony Applications? Looking for that stuff too. I guess I am thinking about building a telephony gateway/everything gateway, for my home office, as an experimental trial for my production environment. -- Respectfully, Martes G Wigglesworth HHC 276 EN BN APO AE 09334 martes.wigglesworth@us.army.mil -- Respectfully, M.G.W. Looking for that stuff too. I guess > I am thinking about building a telephony gateway/everything gateway, for > my home office, as an experimental trial for my production environment. I built custom firewall/VPN routers for our companies' employees to connect to work from home. I used Soekris boxes running on 64mb compact flash cards with FreeBSD on them. There wasn't a guide or how-to then, but there are tons of them now, and there are even some prebuilt/packaged embedded FreeBSD distros that you can build and customize. Some that come to mind are emBSD, monowall, and nanobsd. If you are wanting to build a truly embedded type device, that is very stripped, then you'll have to do a bit of programming and hacking for sure. I want to do a "truly embedded" application/project, and I do want to learn about the programming/hacking aspects of the process. I am still in school, and would like to apply such knowledge to my major studies. Plus, I like to do things myself, and that is the best way for me to learn how all this stuff really works.
