The only thing necessary would be a way to lock the mouse cursor to the current display. That way, on can always boot the dual-head setup but fix the mouse cursor to the LCD only. When the need for actual Dualhead arises, one simply releases the cursor and can then move it off screen. Or is such a thing already possible? > Also - the acpi_video module does allow you to turn on/off the different= =20 > video ports it finds. Mine sees all three (VGA, LCD, Svideo). Does the Svideo port actually work under FreeBSD? That's probably the only thing I boot windows for: hooking up the laptop to a TV. Hi Kalin: Here is my ppp.conf. I am using it on a laptop running FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE.= =20 My PCMCIA modem is recognized as sio4: sio4: <3Com 3CXM/3CCM556> at port 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 11 function 0 config 33 on pccard0 so I use /dev/cuaa4. Perhaps you should try /dev/cuaa0 ? Make sure you add=20 allow users $YOUR_ACCOUNT at the top of the ppp.conf, so you can dial out without being root. With that tool you can disable the 2nd ide adapter. CD rom does still work and nothing changes but pressing spezial keys won't kill your machine anymore. As it has been said, the bluetooth part is straight forward, you just need to follow the FreeBSD handbook. For the PPP/GPRS part, you have examples of configuration files here [1], along with the page that Randy Bush maintains here [2] [1] http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/Research/SRG/netos/coms/ppp.htm [2] https://rip.psg.com/~randy/gprs-ppp.html Now, depending of your provider (i have no experience with BT but this is the unfortunate case with orange.fr), it may be wise to have an sshd on a 443 port somewhere: some providers have the temptation to sell (and not cheaper with that) only a very small subset of IP: only the 'web' ports are unfiltered ... It may even be wiser (wiser than i have been, definitely) to take that criteria into account when choosing a provider :) - yann From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 10 09:09:42 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DEDA616A4F0 for ; Tue, 10 May 2005 09:09:42 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.el.net (mail.el.net [68.165.89.90]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3D06843D6B for ; Tue, 10 May 2005 09:09:42 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kalin@el.net) Received: (qmail 11933 invoked by uid 1008); 10 May 2005 09:12:08 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO mail.el.net) (127.0.0.1) by mail.el.net with SMTP; 10 May 2005 09:12:08 -0000 Received: from 148.221.178.4 (SquirrelMail authenticated user kalin@el.net); by mail.el.net with HTTP; Tue, 10 May 2005 05:12:08 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <2149.148.221.178.4.1115716328.squirrel@148.221.178.4> In-Reply-To: <8cb27cbf050508191351576ec1@mail.gmail.com> References: <60639.201.129.12.241.1115600122.squirrel@201.129.12.241> <8cb27cbf050508191351576ec1@mail.gmail.com> Date: Tue, 10 May 2005 05:12:08 -0400 (EDT) From: "kalin mintchev" To: "Jon Drews" User-Agent: SquirrelMail/1.4.3a X-Mailer: SquirrelMail/1.4.3a MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Importance: Normal cc: fbsd_user@a1poweruser.com cc: FreeBSD Mobile Mailing List Subject: Re: modem/ppp X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 10 May 2005 09:09:43 -0000 thanks for replying.. i used either recommendation with the one from: http://FreeBSD.a1poweruser.com:6088/05.04-Internet_access_protocols.htm#User%20PPP almost working. using the example conf file i get to dial and hear all the normal modem sounds and after a while i get: PPP enabled. but can not ping anywhere outside. ifconfig tun0 prints inbetween other stuff this: inet 148.222.111.111 --> 333.333.333.3 netmask 0xffffffff Opened by PID 1037 ps shows that the process is running. i can ping the 333.333.333.3 number but nothing else. in the resolve.conf i have dns that are not necesarely the isp's but i know they are working fine. but even bypassing the dns by just pinging ips i can't ping anything but the 333.333.333.3 number.... any idea why? thanks... > On 5/8/05, kalin mintchev wrote: >> hi all... >> >> need a little help to set up a pcmci modem. i've never used a modem >> before.. >> >> this is a 3com card. and it gets recognized fine - as sio0. i have tun0. >> i'm trying to use it with ppp. i read the handbook on ppp. what confuses >> me is that the ppp.conf is setting a serial port device - cuaa1. > > Hi Kalin: > > Here is my ppp.conf. I thought I sent this, but I don't see it in my out box, nor have I seen it come back in. Apologies if this is a resend. This improved matters a great deal for me, but I'm still unable to associate with a wep protected network (128-bit key), though it works like a charm for unprotected nets. I used the same ifconfig parameters on the iwi NIC that work for a Cisco 350 cardbus card on the protected network, but it fails to associate. The debug output enabled by the sysctls indicates that the iwi hears a lot of stations announce themselves, but none get associated. As I say, the Cisco card on the same machine associates properly (the cisco's an 11b, but the iwi fails on 11b or 11g. I associated successfully with an unlocked network in 11b mode with the iwi, so I think that's working). The params are: wepmode on wepkey "13-char-string" weptxkey 1. That's after a separate ifconfig setting the mode above. Any words of wisdom? Should I specify the key differently to the iwi (though ifconfig reports the value I expect)? Can I give you more info? man ifconfig says: For maximum portability, hex keys are recom- mended; the mapping of text keys to WEP encryption is usually driver-specific. In particular, the Windows drivers do this map- ping differently to FreeBSD. Obvious guesses about padding before and after with 0's failed. The laptop has a synaptic mousepad endowed of two buttons that in normal conditions are not used at all being enough to double-hit on the pad to have the same effect as that of pressing the left button. Now at boot time I enabled moused # ps ax|grep moused 493 ?? Ss 0:00.54 /usr/sbin/moused -p /dev/psm0 -t auto And the following in /etc/X11/xorg.conf ................................................ Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "Auto" Option "Device" "/dev/sysmouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection ................................................. Now it happens that: 1) If I start kde as a user by means of the command startx (having put startkde into .xinitrc) the mouse(-pad) works as expected: I can move around the screen and select and launch programs just moving on the pad and double hitting the pad . No problems! In a nutshell no need to press the left button. 2) If at boot time I start kde by means of kdm having put in /etc/ttys: ttyv8 "/usr/local/bin/kdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure and modified /etc/pam.d as required to autologin, I immediatedly and automagically login into kde as a user and the mouse works BUT... with the pad I can only move around the screen and the double-hit doesn't work anymore so that I have to use the left button cumpulsorily (and annoyingly). Why in your opinion is that crazy behavior and what should I do? Ciao Vittorio
