I think this issue was talked about a week or two ago: http://groups-beta.google.com/groups?&as_ugroup=*.freebsd.* My only other generic advice would be to read the man page for bktr, it has lots of info about options and overrides... umm have you tired dscaler on windows? This program autodetects the PCTV cards and can yield some detailed info about them (plus it's the best tv viewer app for windows): http://deinterlace.sourceforge.net/about.htm From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 30 05:51:25 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CD0AD16A4CE for ; Sun, 30 Jan 2005 05:51:25 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mproxy.gmail.com (mproxy.gmail.com [216.239.56.248]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 747D443D55 for ; Sun, 30 Jan 2005 05:51:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from bill.kirkland@gmail.com) Received: by mproxy.gmail.com with SMTP id x71so82731cwb for ; Sat, 29 Jan 2005 21:51:25 -0800 (PST) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:message-id:date:from:reply-to:to:subject:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=VTiGYBNT5ra/YdyJcy1e8GLtyFv7rcqdOiBorQ5mzHL5tDfVnRKTtqprwt5fNF8V/cQznO8n9BxU0yRMqtXNe74m6EwIBkKz963WXNnoWuKqqiFkwDUWXkG43DmSCxuGDwlysp05coevct8BZ9q6A0Y0iJZ/Z2wh86WsicBr/Xs= Received: by 10.11.120.42 with SMTP id s42mr1226cwc; Sat, 29 Jan 2005 21:51:25 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.11.120.26 with HTTP; Sat, 29 Jan 2005 21:51:25 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2005 05:51:25 +0000 From: Bill Kirkland To: multimedia@freeBSD.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: bt848 configuration difficulties X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: Bill Kirkland List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2005 05:51:26 -0000 Hi, I am having difficulties configuring my video capture card. I am running FreeBSD-5.3 with the bt848 driver. I only receive static. As many others appear to get this to work, I suspect my configuration is at fault. I apparently have not yet found the document which will clear this up for me. It functions from WinXP, so I know my hardware works and is connected correctly. I have included the output from the following commands ... # uname -a # tail /usr/src/sys/dev/bktr/CHANGELOG # cat /var/log/messages # fxtv -debug startup # pciconf -lv # sysctl hw.bt848 # xawtv -hwscan -debug 2 ... if there is some more information which would help, let me know. Any assistance would be appreciated ... Add tuner type 0x2a. Remove 0x2c which was incorrect. Christian Gusenbauer added support for audio on Hauppauge cards without the audio mux. The MSP is used for audio selection. It would be nice, if you test it with _and_ without any preselections of BKTR_OVERRIDE_TUNER and BKTR_OVERRIDE_CARD and sysctl's hw.bt848.card/hw.bt848.tuner, so that we can see, if auto detection works in your case (my PCTV Rave with MT2032 tuner is detected automatically). (For example I'm pretty interested in the Creative SoundBlaster Live! 24BIT USB. It's pretty cheap (50 EUR), and my past experience with PCI Live cards is pretty good. Does this one work?). I want a USB-Card since my notebook lacks a line-in jack. It has a microphone plug only. Does recording work with USB-cards? I don't need anything fancy, but when I'm recording noise should be reasonably low. Result: it can record in 16-bit, but can't do in 24-bit. And it can't play any source. In the case of released FreeBSD, FreeBSD-stable and FreeBSD-current before Dec. 25 2004, they don't have recording systems for USB audio devices, and I guess that it can't play in the same way. These source code for USB audio devices come from NetBSD. So I also tested it on NetBSD and I got the same result as FreeBSD-current. I conjecture that this failure results from disagreement between BSD source code and 5.1 ch sound. So I recommend to use a simpler USB device of 2 ch and 16 bit. I use SoundBlaster Digital Music (not LX, PX), and it can play sound sources on old FreeBSDs, and can record on FreeBSD-current after Dec. 25 2004. Using ivtv (in linux) i used to send a frame buffer to the s-video and display off of that. This went through the decoder. So, my question is: Is there any howto's or perhaps patches in -CURRENT that would allow for the decoder and video out to work with my PVR-350? Once again thanks for all of the wonderful development. With the above-mentioned Hercules card (probably EOL'ed), I was able to record, with 4.x and patches (probably incorporated into -current, submitted as 4 PRs). I didn't record any serious sources, but just recorded the sound of me connecting and disconnecting a cable to the mic and line in jacks (clicks and buzz) to verify it worked. Noise, hmmm, well, I looked at the recorded data from this card and it is not that quiet, compared to some other cards. About this particular card -- the only supported sample rate is the professional rate of 48000 samples/sec. So I had to hack the other utilities I use, to convert other rates to 48000 -- for my own use, I make 48000kHz sample recordings so playback of my own material has been no problem. As a rule of thumb, I'd suggest searching for reviews on-line, and seeing what the reviewer has to say. Often I'll read reviews and they'll say that the device works on 'doze as-is, but in order to enable the special features the card offers, you need to load the (usually) 'doze-only drivers supplied. In that case, I read it to mean that the card will work as-is for 2 channel playback/recording with any compatible USB audio OS (like the BSDen and such) with no need for special drivers. There's another card I've read about for which this is said to be true, that I want to acquire and try it out, also with optical outputs, to try my luck. I'll try to remember to post an update. It's theoretically possible that the cards which require drivers in order to work, need a firmware load, after which they appear as well-behaved USB audio devices, at least for the common 16-bit 2- channel case. These are false. FreeBSDs may be able to drive this USB device. I might plug my headphone in a microphone hole yesterday. I'm ashamed for making a big mistake. I just obtained the Creative Audigy 2 NX USB today, and while it looks promising when I connected it (uaudio finds it, and recognizes what it can do), it doesn't quite seem to be able to play back yet. I haven't tried -- I just saw the errors below, and `mixer' reports it's only mixer-aware. I bought this because I think I read on the NetBSD list that one developer had no problems with it. This is a 16/24-bit card, capable of 96kHz sample, and 5.1 audio. I think that its capabilities are fooling the FreeBSD code -- when I search the NetBSD code for this, I can't find this check. play channel supported format list invalid pcm1: chn_init(pcm1:play:0) failed: err = 19 pcm1: pcm_chn_create(ua_chan, 1, 0xc19f4a80) failed record channel supported format list invalid pcm1: chn_init(pcm1:record:0) failed: err = 19 pcm1: pcm_chn_create(ua_chan, -1, 0xc19f4a80) failed This is right after uaudio_query_formats. I need to add debugging to see what is being found, but from reading the uaudio_query_formats() code in uaudio.c (the source which I have, based on the PRs and 4.x), it may have problems with the capabilities of the card. There is quite a bit in my dmesg that I need to look at, later. I'll also reboot into NetBSD and verify its operation there, as well as add hacks to try to make it work sometime soon... > I might plug my headphone in a microphone hole yesterday. > I'm ashamed for making a big mistake. Do not be ashamed, we all make mistakes like this :-) Oh, this Audigy USB card is the one I mentioned in my last mail that I would report if it worked or not... thanks barry bouwsma From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Feb 1 18:33:46 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ED2B216A4CE for ; Tue, 1 Feb 2005 18:33:46 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.iinet.net.au (mail-08.iinet.net.au [203.59.3.40]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id BF81543D45 for ; Tue, 1 Feb 2005 18:33:45 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jne@iinet.net.au) Received: (qmail 4049 invoked from network); 1 Feb 2005 18:33:44 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO ?192.168.1.2?) The patch I found in the archives of this list wouldn't apply cleanly against my 5.3-STABLE or 6-CURRENT circa December last year, but there were reports of it working previous to that, IIRC.. I've CVSUP'ed again since then. Is it worth trying again and posting the results, or is that patch old news? cheers, -Michael. Ultimately, I'm after TiVo-like functionality...the ability to watch/pause/30-second-skip live TV, and record shows. I am leaning towards using MythTV (but have some questions about that too) I apologize if not all of these are 100% freebsd-related, but I'm hoping others on this list have similar setups. First, I'm looking for recommendations on TV capture and TV-out cards. I'm strongly leaning towards the Hauppage PVR-250, since it appears to be well-supported, and I may be doing capturing on a lower-end machine that couldn't handle software encoding. And I will probably run two cards so I can watch/record simultaneously. If I go with the Hauppage - where to buy? And do I need to pay attention to a particular hardware revision or if I buy the "PVR-250" will it just work? How about a source for remotes that will work with FreeBSD and MythTV? I have a K6-2/350MHz machine laying around. Is it fast enough, with the right TV-out card, to be used as the feed for the TV? That is, reading and decoding the recorded video from the Hauppage? How about with MythTV's picture-in-picture feature (that is, decoding 2 streams, right?) If not, my workstation is an AMD Athlon XP 1700+, but I'd have to run coax upstairs...or buy another machine. Does MythTV work well under FreeBSD? I like what I'm reading about it, but the documentation is very linux-centric. I haven't found a lot of information on running it under BSD. There was a similar project I was reading about the other day, but I forgot the name...is Myth the best option? I have what I consider 3 "sources" that feed picture into my TV - an Apex DVD player, analog cable, and a Gamecube. The TV has an RF input for cable/antenna, and AV (RCA) inputs. With my PVR box in the picture, how would this all fit together? Can I tell the Apex to output on channel 3, and the TV-out card to output on channel 4, and then multiplex both signals onto the RF-in on the TV? (And then the GC on A/V) Currently the cable plugs into RF-in (cable-ready TV, no cable box), and I (well, the wifey) manually switch the AV jacks between the GC and the DVD player. If I connect the Apex into one of the PVR cards, can I feed through that way? I'm not interested in recording DVD's...I just want this to work. Will the tuner card not work because of Macrovision? (This isn't one of the "good" Apexes (Apexi?)) I appreciate any pointers! The pvr box is headless and stores recorded shows to my large array. I tried using Myth but it just would not work well for my needs, plus parts wouldnt compile. I was using a older build and did not try the latest. Instead I switched to Freevo. The web based interface is perfect for scheduling shows and I can do playback on my workstation or xbmc. The biggest downside is I cannot get ffmpeg, mencoder nor transcode to work well enough with the pvr-250 so I wrote a dirty little shell script to cat the cxm device to the filesystem. It works but I wish I could alter the bit rate the pvr card outputs at, 10mbit resolution creates 4gig/hr files at full NTSC size. For the most part the pvr-250 is plug and play. Most of the tuners are supported so you should be okay. I've not fiddled with source selection, from what I gather from reply's here it seems to be hit or miss, oddly. I would guess it would work. Unless it doesnt. (if it is (18*1024)-1, sound right-left will be counterchanged.) This problem must come from maxsegz size in the function bus_dma_tag_create() in uaudio_pcm.c which is smaller than UAUDIO_PCM_BUFF_SIZE and one digit smaller than maxsegzs of other audio devices. Actually, this problem can be fixed by changing maxsegz from 0x3fff to 0x3ffff. But I don't know it has some reasons, or it is a mere copy mistake. As you know DMA buffer should be less than the maxsegz. And if the USB device can handle DMA transferrs up to 0x3ffff bytes in a segment it's ok to set the value in bus_dma_tag_create(9). The value 0x3fff(16383) seems to be too small one and I believe most hardwares can DMA up to 64KB at least. So I guess it's an "copy & paste mistake". -- Regards, Pyun YongHyeon http://www.kr.freebsd.org/~yongari | yongari@freebsd.org From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Feb 2 10:52:45 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 99FA716A4CE for ; Wed, 2 Feb 2005 10:52:45 +0000 (GMT) Received: from web41211.mail.yahoo.com (web41211.mail.yahoo.com [66.218.93.44]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 4DBB243D49 for ; Wed, 2 Feb 2005 10:52:45 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from arne_woerner@yahoo.com) Received: (qmail 63485 invoked by uid 60001); 2 Feb 2005 10:52:45 -0000 Comment: DomainKeys? Be aware that the driver places some funny limitations on the output formats. It does not do DVD half size resolutions (352x480), even though this is a format standardized by the DVD Powers-That-Be. It does, however, do 480x480, which is not a standard resolution. The driver also hard codes limits on the encoder bitrate for each output size, and the limits seem to produce a somewhat more blocky capture than I'd like. Small complaints, though. It works well. I ended up wrapping some shell scripts around "at" to implement my "PVR". The gist of it is, "dd < /dev/cxm0 > output.mpg" with a timer that stops the process after an appropriate amount of time. Someday I might write some code that reads in XMLTV format to automate the scheduling of shows I want. Other notes... The MythTV/FreeBSD port doesn't compile cleanly, last I looked. And the author has released a patch that adds the Video4Linux ioctls to the cxm driver code, which itself already requires kernel patches to install. MythTV won't work without these ioctls. Patches upon patches... But the V4L hacked version is behind the official version in the ports tree, and thus supports fewer tuners. Oh, also, search back in the archives a few weeks for my question (and John-Mark Gurney's very helpful answer) regarding capturing over-the-air broadcasts. The driver always uses cable tunings, even if you tell it you have an antenna... -David. My Radeon 9600 works okay for TV out. IIRC you might need to plug it in before you start the computer and then it just runs on the TV by default. However, getting the best settings for X was a bit more hassle. I found this out while trying to watch DVD's out and about, without a laptop but with a shoebox sized PC and a TV. In the end I just used the TV as a monitor and an 848 card and my TV viewer application [*] seemed to be better than the tuner in the real TV! Steve [*] Most other TV viewers historically froze up most of my hardware, so I've rolled my own viewer (C/Xlib) that seems to be gentler on the hardware. It's been a couple of months since I used this setup (a PS2 arrived) but I'm pretty sure that if the hardware was all plugged before the kit was powered up then the TVOUT display would be on. This would have been with xf86, YMMV with x.org (I've not tried it but I have upgraded to it already). I know it worked fine as I was really expecting it not to and I did use it this way for quite a long time. I've attached my kernel config and X config in case they're helpful. (they've not changed "significantly" since I had this all working) Just in case I'm talking rubbish. I've have done this by connecting the SVIDEO out from the 9600 to the SVIDEO->composite(? - yellow phono plug) converter and then I'll plug into the video-in socket on the TV. When I get a chance I'll try it out again, but I don't have a TV with video in where I work and I've chucked out my VCR that acted as the video->UHF converter. I'll have a butchers and see how easy it would be to attach my PS2 video->uhf converter with a soldering iron to solve the problem. Steve P.S. both config files are full of comments that I've never got round to removing, because I'm lazy, they're probably referring to stuff from years ago. --cmJC7u66zC7hs+87 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="XF86Config.pub" Section "ServerLayout" # I've been watching this thread as I am interested in building such a setup also. Can anyone comment on whether the 350 offers any benefit over the 250? As I understand it, the 350 also includes a hardware decoder for MPEG-2 playback. Is this any significant advantage? My PVR will be based on an 1gz AMD Athlon. Also, I have a wide screen HDTV. Does anyone know of any cards that support the wide screen HDTV resolutions? Although I've found tuner cards (no hardware encoder) that support this, I haven't come across any PVR cards. My PVR > will be based on an 1gz AMD Athlon. yes, if you're going to use i8the tv-out. it's a very high quality tv-out, back when i bought it (14 months ago) it was far superior to all other available tv-out solutions (think gfx cards or via onboard tv out). another advantage is that you do not need a graphic card anymore if you plan to use the tv as your only output. this saves power, lowers heat production and allows for mainboards with few pci slots. of course there are disadvantages too: - no FreeBSD driver (yet?) - even under linux, the decoder is not very well supported, if you feed it any other movie format than what comes out of the decoder. it's however possible to use the tv-out without the decoder, all you need is a halfway decent machine (2k celeron works nicely and probably is even overkill) - no use for a hdtv cheers, t. Thanks for the reply. I reviewed the pcHDTV 3000 and the Air2PC cards. Any recommendations of one over the other? Seems like these would be good additions for my system for capturing or time-shifting HDTV over the air broadcasts. However a PVR-250 is still needed for the day to day work of capturing or time shifting my satellite reception. Does this make sense and can I run both cards? If so, I'll build with the PVR-250 first and then add the HDTV later (while keeping my eye on the July 1 deadline). :) Thanks, Drew -- Visit The Alchemist's Warehouse Magic Tricks, DVDs, Videos, Books, & More! http://www.alchemistswarehouse.com From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Feb 3 03:50:40 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A939B16A4CE for ; Thu, 3 Feb 2005 03:50:40 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.wrs.com (unknown-1-11.wrs.com [147.11.1.11]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 137CC43D4C for ; Thu, 3 Feb 2005 03:50:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from chris.kottaridis@windriver.com) Received: from ala-mta03.windriver.com (ala-mta03 [147.11.57.132]) by mail.wrs.com (8.9.3/8.9.1) with ESMTP id TAA10256 for ; Wed, 2 Feb 2005 19:50:37 -0800 (PST) Received: by ala-mta03.wrs.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) id ; Wed, 2 Feb 2005 19:50:36 -0800 Message-ID: <1107402646.659.7.camel@creto.quietwind.net> From: chris.kottaridis@windriver.com To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2005 19:50:46 -0800 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Subject: Sound card in FReeBSD 5.3 X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: chris.kottaridis@windriver.com List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 03 Feb 2005 03:50:40 -0000 I just did an installation of FreeBSD 5.3. I folowed the steps in the FreeBSD "Handbook" about sound cards and have the sound driver loading at boot time as a loadable module. I can check the status of it OK: $ cat /dev/sndstat FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Installed devices: pcm0: at io 0xef40 irq 16 kld snd_emu10k1 (4p/2r/0v channelsduplex default) Also, when I log in via kdm and I get a nice little tune played as KDE starts up. However, I can't seem to get any of my video players, xine or aviplay to get any sound to come out. I seem to be running devfs: $ df /dev Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on devfs 1 1 0 100% /dev I can't say I really understand the devfs "magic", but here are the devs listed in /dev, I've added them at the end of this email if that helps. What am I doing wrong that allows the device to be probed and kdm to play a nice tune as kde comes up when I log in, but noen of my video players can get any sound? Any advice appreciated. It was working fine on same machine when I was running 4.x. (1p/1r/0v channels duplex) pcm1: at addr ? (1p/1r/0v channels duplex) (pcm1 is the other USB card that works for me) But, when I play audio, so far I hear nothing with FreeBSD yet. I've added this change to my NetBSD, and after adjusting `mixerctl' there appropriately, I am able to hear something. As it turns out, by default, when this Audigy device resets, it automatically mutes the master output (there's a LED by a button which does the same -- unfortunately, I haven't seen that the button, or anything else on the box or the remote, unmutes the playback). So, the reason which you gave was not the real reason why it did not work -- it seems to just need the multiple-endpoints enabled, which appears to work for playback, and does not seem to affect my other uaudio device negatively, though I have not played too much with that. It could also be that I need to apply that patch for other reasons, but playback works without it, as opposed to not working at all. In addition, when I try to record anything, my program writes the file header, and then nothing. It's not timing out waiting for data as would be the case when I try to record from s/pdif input but no source. I also couldn't get NetBSD to write anything more than the header when trying to record, so this is something else. My NetBSD source is over a month out-of-date, so I'm about to update that in case there are changes I've missed. In order to unmute the audio, I tried and failed to tie that mixerctl to a FreeBSD sysctl knob, the way I adapted the CMI8738 s/pdif options that are available to NetBSD's `mixerctl' in order to have interactive control over that input with FreeBSD. When that failed, I added a line to uaudio_set() the values for the Audigy NX to unmute the audio at attach time. That isn't a very nice solution -- since there are a lot of knobs available to NetBSD from this card, as well as other cards like the CMI8738-based card I have, that don't seem to fit well with the FreeBSD mixer/sysctl control. I did some more hacking on uaudio.c to add to FreeBSD the ctlname and ctlunit, as well as NetBSD's audioio.h for the labels, which helped greatly to clarify what FreeBSD is trying to do at higher debug levels. Unfortunately there's some interaction that seems to make this enable a phantom FreeBSD mixer bass control, as well as to try to set a few extensions -- these could be related, but things still appear to work in spite of that. Unfortunately, I don't have a working `mixerctl' program able to retrieve and tweak these values yet. I probably need to dig more deeply in the source to make that happen, if it's possible. Here's what NetBSD's `mixerctl' has to say about this card, and this matches the values which FreeBSD is getting but not able to make use of: inputs.aux.mute=off [ off on ] inputs.aux=128,128 volume delta=1 inputs.line.mute=off [ off on ] inputs.line=192,192 volume delta=1 record.mixerout=133 volume delta=6 record.line=200 volume delta=6 record.aux=133 volume delta=6 record.sel14-i12i13i11=2 [ 1 2 3 ] outputs.ext17-enable=off [ off on ] outputs.master.mute=off [ off on ] outputs.master=217 volume delta=1 outputs.ext21-enable=off [ off on ] outputs.aux.mute=off [ off on ] outputs.ext23-enable=off [ off on ] inputs.ext27-enable=off [ off on ] outputs.speaker.mute=off [ off on ] outputs.sel29-i17i27i4=1 [ 1 2 3 ] outputs.headphones.mute=off [ off on ] outputs.sel31-i17i21=1 [ 1 2 ] The failure of this card to actually record is annoying, but other than that, it has the potential to work with FreeBSD, other than that the above knobs are not available by default at present. For those who want to record at 32 or 44,1kHz samplerates, this card offers that, even though it apparently doesn't support those for playback natively, hmmm. There are a few dials and buttons on this Audigy 2 NX as well, but unlike my other Big Knob soundcard, nothing appears as a uhid device. The cursed mute button seems to do that much, with no need for a uhid interface, while none of the other controls have any obvious effect. thanks barry bouwsma From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Feb 5 01:18:25 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E19BC16A4CE for ; Sat, 5 Feb 2005 01:18:25 +0000 (GMT) Received: from www.cray1.de (i.would.like.to.spoof.my.realip.de [64.27.85.120]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4175643D39 for ; Sat, 5 Feb 2005 01:18:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ubm@u-boot-man.de) Received: from greatsheep.marines (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.cray1.de (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id CAA03714 for ; Sat, 5 Feb 2005 02:18:11 +0100 Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2005 02:18:44 +0100 From: Marc "UBM" Bocklet To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Message-Id: <20050205021844.4c53d218.ubm@u-boot-man.de> In-Reply-To: <200502021414.29186.michaelnottebrock@gmx.net> References: <200502021414.29186.michaelnottebrock@gmx.net> X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 1.0.0rc (GTK+ 1.2.10; i386-portbld-freebsd5.3) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Re: Hardware recommendations for MythTV/FreeBSD X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 05 Feb 2005 01:18:26 -0000 On Wed, 2 Feb 2005 14:14:25 +0100 Michael Nottebrock wrote: > On Tuesday, 1. The SIS 30x series cards work like a charm with the x driver. Bye Marc -- "And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?" W.B. Simply modify dvd_ntsc_profile in cxm.c, recompile, and reload the module. Some suggested bitrate values are: { 0, 9000000, 9520000 }, /* 1 hour on 4.7 GB media */ { 0, 4000000, 4520000 }, /* 4 hours on 8.54 GB media */ > Also anyone solved the "encoder dma not enough buffer space free" error or > even why it occurs? It indicates the application isn't consuming the data fast enough. In the case of mplayer some options are: a) Better video card. Personally I like the ATI Radeon cards. b) Better Xserver (i.e. XFree86 4.4) which supports using the video card hardware for things like colorspace conversion and MPEG motion compensation. This is of course assuming your video card has hardware for those sorts of things. c) Faster processor. d) More memory (only if your machine is actually swapping). e) Modify mplayer to implement application real time buffering using METEORSSIGNAL (basically copy libmpdemux/tvi_bsdbt848.c to libmpdemux/tvi_bsdcxm.c and start hacking) or try increasing CXM_SG_BUFFERS. This only helps if the problem is due to large bursts of data ... it will not help if your machine is simply not fast enough to keep up with the average data rate. f) Enable MPlayer's frame drop option (more of a workaround than a solution). BTW using: $ cat /dev/cxm0 | mplayer - causes the machine to do more work than: $ mplayer /dev/cxm0 -- John ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Feith Systems | Voice: 1-215-646-8000 | Email: john@feith.com | | John Wehle | Fax: 1-215-540-5495 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Feb 5 18:20:35 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C45BC16A4CE for ; Sat, 5 Feb 2005 18:20:35 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mxsf04.cluster1.charter.net (mxsf04.cluster1.charter.net [209.225.28.204]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1BCBA43D48 for ; Sat, 5 Feb 2005 18:20:35 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from steven@403forbidden.net) Received: from mxip01.cluster1.charter.net (mxip01a.cluster1.charter.net [209.225.28.131])j15IKXUP013969 for ; Sat, 5 Feb 2005 13:20:33 -0500 Received: from 24-197-165-70.cpe.ga.charter.com (HELO services.403forbidden.net) (24.197.165.70) by mxip01.cluster1.charter.net with ESMTP; 05 Feb 2005 13:20:34 -0500 X-Ironport-AV: i="3.88,180,1102309200"; d="scan'208"; a="553314451:sNHT27394720" Received: from atlantis.403forbidden.net (atlantis.403forbidden.net [10.0.0.10])j15IKc1S049307 for ; Sat, 5 Feb 2005 13:20:38 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from steven@403forbidden.net) Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2005 13:21:36 -0500 (EST) From: "Steven S." It just records then I playback on other devices. I use a simple shell script which freevo calls. All it does is this: /usr/local/bin/buffer < /dev/cxm0 > $1 & where $1 is the path passed from freevo. I only tried using buffer after a previous recommendation on the list. It might have helped or not.. i've no evidence either way. I guess my next step is try to determine if the hardware raid might be slowing things down just enough. I'll redirect the output to the system disk and see what I get. > It indicates the application isn't consuming the data fast enough. > In the case of mplayer some options are: > > a) Better video card.
