In many cases these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions of -CURRENT include gcc3.4, which is much stricter about such things as function declarations, literal strings constants that continue over several physical lines, and forcing the deprecation of antique header files such as varargs.h (we should now be using stdargs.h). The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386 architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more of the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as size of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth. In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide. If you need help in one or more build environments that you do not have access to, please ask for help on the freebsd-ports mailing list. One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at this kind of thing.) The errors are listed below. In the case where the same problem exists on more than one build environment, the URL points to the latest errorlog for that type. (By 'build environment' here we mean 'combination of 4.x/5.x/6.x with target architecture'.) (Note: the dates are included to help you to gauge whether or not the error still applies to the latest version. The program that generates this report is not yet able to determine this automatically.) portname: emulators/ski broken because: Incomplete pkg-plist build errors: http://pointyhat.freebsd.org/errorlogs/i386-errorlogs/e.5.2006111106/ski-0.943l.2.log.bz2 (Sep 26 04:32:48 UTC 2006) overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=emulators&portname=ski If these errors are ones that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts in the past. Every effort has been made to make sure that these error reports really do correspond to a port that you maintain. However, due to the fact that this is an automated process, it may indeed generate false matches. If one of these errors fits that description, please forward this email to the author of this software, Mark Linimon , so that he can attempt to fix the problem in the future. Thanks for your efforts to help improve FreeBSD. ERROR: Unable to write data to disk da1! I referred to the errata for 6.1 at the following URL. http://www.freebsd.org/releases/6.1R/errata.html Here is a similar error, I think, posted. (2006/05/27, updated 2006/06/01) On FreeBSD/alpha, sysinstall(8) sometimes does not allow a disk to be labeled. The disk is presented in sysinstall(8) but actions like Auto do not result in a disklabel being presented. One workaround is to boot the install CD, then select Fixit. From the Fixit# prompt, run disklabel(8) manually. For example: disklabel -rw da1 auto ensures a valid disklabel is written onto da1. Reboot from the install media. sysinstall(8) will now detect a valid disklabel on the disk and allow it to be partitioned to your preference. Although it states that it happens on FreeBSD/alpha, I tried to fix my problem using the same way. After I selected Fixit, I picked option 4 (Start an Emergency Holographic Shell) from the following menu. X Exit Exit this menu 2 CDROM/DVD Use the "live" filesystem CDROM/DVD 3 Floppy Use a floppy generated from the fixit image 4 Shell Start an Emergency Holographic Shell Then, I got the following messages. DEBUG: Doctor: I can't set the controlling terminal. Type ``exit'' in this fixit shell to resume sysinstall sh: can't access tty; job control turned off No matter I tried `disklabel' or `bsdlabel', the following error message was shown. disklabel: not found or, bsdlabel: not found If the solution provided in the errata does not apply on IA-64, that's OK. What I want is to have my disk partitioned and have my Itanium machine installed with FreeBSD. I am looking forward to hear from you. Thank you very much! Here is the information on how I was going to partition my drive. PartMount Size Newfs ------------- ----- ------------- da1p1 99MB EFI da1p2 400MB EFI da1p4 /1024MB UFS2 Y da1p5 /var1024MB UFS2+S Y da1p6 /tmp1024MB UFS2+S Y da1p7 /usr20480MB UFS2+S Y da1p8 swap16384MB SWAP I also notice the errata posted on May 27, 2006 about a similar problem for the Alpha platform. (http://www.freebsd.org/releases/6.1R/errata.html) I tried the workaround solution, i.e. running disklabel(8) manually from the Fixit# prompt. For the Holographic shell, it didn't work. Then, I tried the option of "live" filesystem CDROM. I ran the following command as stated on the errata (da1 is the SCSI drive where I want to have my FreeBSD installation). % bsdlabel -rw da1 auto Then, I reboot the machine with disc 1. After I entered into the "create BSD partition" screen, unlike what is described in the errata, I couldn't see any change on the partitions. The only thing that I could do was to partition my hard drive in the way I want. However, I still got the same error message when sysinstall was about to write the partition information onto the drive. ERROR: Unable to write data to disk da1! Can anyone help please? Thank you very much! There is no hardware problem with our machine. Originally, we suspected that there might be some hardware problem with our machine, or drives. That's why we tried to install Linux (Debian 3.1) on our HP zx6000 machine. The results was that we were able install Linux on _both_ of the hard drives that we have seamlessly. It shows that there is no hardware failure with our machine. 2. sysinstall not able to detect more than 1 drive Linux detects both 73GB U320 hard drives while the FreeBSD sysinstall see only 1. 3. problem with swap partition If we create both / and swap filesystems on a single disk, we get the error ERROR: Unable to write data to disk da1! But if, for experimental purpose, we used the whole disk space for swap. We got the following error. Couldn't make filesystems properly. Aborting. Our workaround solution: We used the whole disk drive for / and the disk was labelled successfully and so was the whole installation process. Then, we will later mount swap to a new drive.
