It seems that editing the =2Edesktop files and putting them someplace that KDE can see them (I made a /usr/local/share/applnk/OpenOffice 2.0.2/ directory) gets OOo to show up in the K menu and the file associations to work, but it would be nice to have some icons. Unfortunately, I either have insufficient google skills or no one has working icons for OOo 2.0 with KDE as I couldn't find any useful info on getting the icons to work. Any ideas? It would be really nice to at least have a FAQ question for getting OOo 2.x and KDE to play nice even if it just listed the steps one needs to do by hand. =2D-=20 John Baldwin =A0<>< =A0http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ "Power Users Use the Power to Serve" =A0=3D =A0http://www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-openoffice@FreeBSD.ORG Sun May 7 04:14:08 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: openoffice@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-openoffice@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BC5A116A402 for ; Sun, 7 May 2006 04:14:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jhb@freebsd.org) Received: from server.baldwin.cx (66-23-211-162.clients.speedfactory.net [66.23.211.162]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1BB1A43D48 for ; Sun, 7 May 2006 04:14:07 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jhb@freebsd.org) Received: from zion.baldwin.cx (zion.baldwin.cx [192.168.0.7]) (authenticated bits=0) by server.baldwin.cx (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k474E5ID076720 for ; Sun, 7 May 2006 00:14:05 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from jhb@freebsd.org) From: John Baldwin To: openoffice@freebsd.org Date: Sun, 7 May 2006 00:14:05 -0400 User-Agent: KMail/1.9.1 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200605070014.05428.jhb@freebsd.org> X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV 0.87.1/1446/Sat May 6 19:46:08 2006 on server.baldwin.cx X-Virus-Status: Clean X-Spam-Status: No, score=-4.4 required=4.2 tests=ALL_TRUSTED,AWL,BAYES_00, UPPERCASE_25_50 autolearn=ham version=3.1.0 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.1.0 (2005-09-13) on server.baldwin.cx Cc: Subject: [PATCH] Automatically fixup the *.desktop files and hook them into KDE X-BeenThere: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting OpenOffice to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 07 May 2006 04:14:08 -0000 The patch below patches the .desktop files in the share/xdg directory. Could you please visit http://people.freebsd.org/~fenner/portsurvey/openoffice@freebsd.org.html and correct the problems listed there? The individual port with a problem is editors/openoffice.org-1.0. If you have already corrected the problems and submitted a PR, please accept my thanks and apologies for the delay in getting the fixes into the tree. This reminder is created automatically and does not (yet) have a way to know if a PR fixing the problem has been submitted. Please do *NOT* send your response to me directly; I do not necessarily have time to commit your fix; please instead submit a PR via 'send-pr' so it doesn't get lost. Problems are usually of two types: 1. The software package has been upgraded and the version in the port has been removed. The best solution to this problem is to upgrade the port to the most current version of the software package. If you are a FreeBSD committer, then you can just upgrade the port directly. If not, you should create the updated port on your own machine, test it (and maybe even run "portlint" on it), and then use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -uNr old-port updated-port". If you added or deleted any files, please make an explicit note of it. 2. The mirror site being used no longer contains the software package in question, or no longer exists. Solutions include: a) If there are other mirror sites, just remove the bad site from the list. (Make sure that what appears to be a bad site isn't actually a problem of type 1, upgrade) b) If the README or other support files in the software documentation mention where to get the software package, use one of those sites. c) Use a search engine to find another place to get the original DISTFILES. Make sure that you don't pick a FreeBSD distfiles mirror -- if you can't find any other places where the file exists, it can be a LOCAL_PORT or you can simply comment out the MASTER_SITES= line, with a comment explaining why. Once you have a solution, use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -u" of the Makefile. Note that this isn't an urgent issue, as people who try to build the port now will just fall back to the FreeBSD distfiles mirror. Please just put it on your list to do and get to it when you have time. These messages will continue to arrive twice a month until the fix is committed, as a reminder. Thanks, Bill "distfiles" Fenner. While it's true I sent this before you sent the patch for fixing up the .desktop files, it seems you know at least as much if not more than me about integrating applications into KDE. But perhaps I am wrong. I don't know anything about svg or svgz either. I am making the leap that they mean scalable vector graphics and scalable vector graphics compressed, respectively. I have no idea how I made the decision to try them out. What I did was added an application to the KDE panel (kicker). Then I right clicked on the icon that was present, scrolled to the bottom and entered in the path of the icon. Actually, I've just found a message I had posted to openoffice@. I was so used to OOo 1.x just working out of the box I was hoping that there wouldn't be as much manual labor involved. :-P I'll probably try Bartosz's suggestion of using the icons in the actual OOo dist instead, but it looks like they will need to be renamed. =2D-=20 John Baldwin =A0<>< =A0http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ "Power Users Use the Power to Serve" =A0=3D =A0http://www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-openoffice@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 8 11:43:32 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: openoffice@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-openoffice@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2082316A401 for ; Mon, 8 May 2006 11:43:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jhb@freebsd.org) Received: from server.baldwin.cx (66-23-211-162.clients.speedfactory.net [66.23.211.162]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9A06D43D45 for ; Mon, 8 May 2006 11:43:31 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jhb@freebsd.org) Received: from zion.baldwin.cx (zion.baldwin.cx [192.168.0.7]) (authenticated bits=0) by server.baldwin.cx (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k48BhPRB094724; Mon, 8 May 2006 07:43:26 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from jhb@freebsd.org) From: John Baldwin To: Bartosz Fabianowski Date: Mon, 8 May 2006 07:43:24 -0400 User-Agent: KMail/1.9.1 References: <200605070014.05428.jhb@freebsd.org> <20060508.094739.08322187.chat95@mac.com> <445EA14E.5030909@chillt.de> In-Reply-To: <445EA14E.5030909@chillt.de> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200605080743.25307.jhb@freebsd.org> X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV 0.87.1/1449/Sun May 7 15:29:34 2006 on server.baldwin.cx X-Virus-Status: Clean X-Spam-Status: No, score=-4.4 required=4.2 tests=ALL_TRUSTED,AWL,BAYES_00 autolearn=ham version=3.1.0 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.1.0 (2005-09-13) on server.baldwin.cx Cc: openoffice@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [PATCH] Automatically fixup the *.desktop files and hook them into KDE X-BeenThere: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting OpenOffice to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 08 May 2006 11:43:32 -0000 On Sunday 07 May 2006 21:39, Bartosz Fabianowski wrote: > What's still missing are the icons. It also installs the various mimetype icons as well. It does not install the 128x128/main.png icon at all, and it doesn't try to install the lo-color icons. Oops... I assumed this thread was taking place on the questions mailing list and that you were a newbie... must look like I'm trolling, that was not my intention. anyways... Yes I'd have to agree with you about OOo's calc vs. Kspread, pasting data into Kspread is weird too. I can't comment on MS office compat because everything internal to us is in ODF format, when I have to work with outside people I send them a PDF, if they don't need to edit, or a ODF doc and a copy of OOo on CD-R... When it's released, that new ODF plug-in for MS office will be great. -- BSD Podcasts @: http://bsdtalk.blogspot.com/ http://freebsdforall.blogspot.com/ From owner-freebsd-openoffice@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 9 01:07:02 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: openoffice@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-openoffice@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DE19416A471; Tue, 9 May 2006 01:07:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from chat95@mac.com) Received: from smtpout.mac.com (smtpout.mac.com [17.250.248.175]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 819C643D69; Tue, 9 May 2006 01:06:58 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from chat95@mac.com) Received: from mac.com (smtpin01-en2 [10.13.10.146]) by smtpout.mac.com (Xserve/8.12.11/smtpout05/MantshX 4.0) with ESMTP id k4916kmU004417; Mon, 8 May 2006 18:06:47 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost ([133.11.172.102]) (authenticated bits=0) by mac.com (Xserve/smtpin01/MantshX 4.0) with ESMTP id k4916fxA025499; Mon, 8 May 2006 18:06:45 -0700 (PDT) Date: Tue, 09 May 2006 10:06:36 +0900 (JST) Message-Id: <20060509.100636.59649582.chat95@mac.com> To: jhb@freebsd.org From: NAKATA Maho In-Reply-To: <200605080841.44086.jhb@freebsd.org> References: <20060508.094739.08322187.chat95@mac.com> <445EA14E.5030909@chillt.de> <200605080841.44086.jhb@freebsd.org> Organization: private X-Mailer: Mew version 3.3 on Emacs 21.3 / Mule 5.0 (SAKAKI) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: openoffice@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [PATCH] Automatically fixup the *.desktop files and hook them into KDE X-BeenThere: freebsd-openoffice@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting OpenOffice to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 09 May 2006 01:07:03 -0000 In Message-ID: <200605080841.44086.jhb@freebsd.org> John Baldwin wrote: > Ok, the patch below installs the various application icons renamed > to include the openofficeorg-20- prefix so that they work with the > .desktop files out of the box. According to Kris Kennaway there should be a link in pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-6-stable/Latest/. Having installed, 2.0.2 works wonderfully. There is a lot on freebsd-questions about various problems. From an advocacy point of view this is like kde, too complex, and perhaps too large to build. It would be nice if something like setenv PACKAGEROOT ftp://ftp2.FreeBSD.org pkg_add -r openoffice just did the right thing. I preinstalled Java as per instructions while trying to do the build. when I installed the package, I still got a java-less install. so far I do not know enough to miss anything. As a FreeBSD-er I would like to see native java supported but that is just an aside to this email. I got a response on questions that the reason I was have so much trouble was because I did not use the binary package from openoffice.org. For lots of reasons (ease of use for new guys) this is the wrong answer for FreeBSD (I think). You must get tons of emails, there is no need to bother answering this. I sent this only because having installed OpenOffice, I like it, and I think making it easier to install would help FreeBSD people and the OpenOffice project. Thanks for you time. I am a Korean living in the States. ;-) I still have an acient Hancom Office for Windows license somewhere at the basement but I haven't used it for years. I don't know if their Linux software works at all on FreeBSD either. I am just happy with OOo for now but it wasn't fun installing Linux version on FreeBSD/amd64. NeoOffice is nice, and next version will catch up to 2.0 of OOo. Neo is absolutely better than OOo in many respects.
