I am new to this list (normally hanging out on Freebsd-PPC) and have a question regarding some possible hardware support changes in FreeBSD 7. I was wondering whether support has been added for the HP XW9300 Professional Workstation. 6 would not boot with the problems described here: http://bsd.haofood.net/2006/02/02/freebsd-on-hp-xw/ and his referenced article here: http://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=61050+0+/usr/local/www/ db/text/2004/freebsd-amd64/20041114.freebsd-amd64 and I have not been able to find any followup to this problem via a search of the mailing lists or googling. The machine uses a Tyan S2895 motherboard http://www.tyan.com/support_download_datasheets.aspx?model=S.S2895 with an HP BIOS. Any chance 7 would support this machine now? I have been able to boot Linux (SuSE) and Windows (XP Pro 32-bit) without difficulty, but both FreeBSD and Solaris (and Mac OS X - sssshh!) choke. Any chance this has to do with the BSD kernel specifically? In my experience the machine refused to boot both -AMD64 and -x86 variants. I do not own one at present so cannot provide specific details, but my last one was a great machine and I am considering replacing it with the same, but only if I can make it a FreeBSD box ;-) Thanks! - Jeff From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Nov 28 01:29:18 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5765816A469 for ; Wed, 28 Nov 2007 01:29:18 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from fbsdlists@gmail.com) Received: from nz-out-0506.google.com (nz-out-0506.google.com [64.233.162.237]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 16A2313C447 for ; Wed, 28 Nov 2007 01:29:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from fbsdlists@gmail.com) Received: by nz-out-0506.google.com with SMTP id l8so872631nzf for ; Tue, 27 Nov 2007 17:29:17 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; bh=w6IMfj2GsbnNVKwDbjmcZ4DN7iY97+Lmp+uNxZ/cxz8=; b=uyv4jvtFzfPhBHJ9LSkcsZa2Bm6E0XGnX+v4+fCK3YEDTh+PBeUl77hrQCB/cMJDsLpf1Q4E/FV4DOZ+fH6bIS3zCeYQk+E/0xYwUp8/tyzw2A0lmPAVPwQh8Y+JOi1r66hk8+diJKu1opB/uuTAouW2AQqczI3UU2c6k2PAfuc= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; b=SDhXHmgk2ke0AUyaaXCcNJwjyQQHWNEmg9logOTAwHQJ6aPlF3DDjb+Dj7hD7zUbcBrQ8fnWnOljnVtrUzT2yaXzA6eYeaCJBz2fdVSoFwRs7yY26OIQKVnIai8LEo8q1WWYbIi+ADE7itEe2/yW5dv4e0v9TE3MuGT2zbip9FA= Received: by 10.140.82.2 with SMTP id f2mr2303226rvb.1196211679133; Tue, 27 Nov 2007 17:01:19 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.140.161.21 with HTTP; Tue, 27 Nov 2007 17:01:19 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <54db43990711271701y1560e358odd3d601402cd07b6@mail.gmail.com> Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2007 20:01:19 -0500 From: "Bob Johnson" To: "Jeff Isaac" In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline References: Cc: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Any Update on HP Workstation Support? Thanks for getting back to me with this link. These HP systems seem to be tricky for BSD kernels for whatever reason. Is there any way to gently "encourage" this issue to become more important for a potential fix? I know that things like this can be difficult to nail down especially on a programmer's limited and largely unpaid time, but I would be willing to make a small (I am a college student after all) financial contribution to seeing this issue at least more deeply investigated. Short of that is there any Linux distro you could recommend that behaves similarly to FreeBSD in terms of usability since several BSD's seem to have this trouble? Is it worth bugging HP? I see that though the i386 port seems to have fixed this, it appears that it suffers from random panics on our families of machines. Thanks so much for your time and assistance. If I do end up getting another of these machines, I will be more than happy to help in whatever way I can to get them information off of it if the folks working on the port can only tell me how. I'm no CS grad but I do have experience in IT, so hopefully I can find what they'd be looking for :-) Thanks again! - Jeff From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Nov 28 10:14:16 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D9D9516A420 for ; Wed, 28 Nov 2007 10:14:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from paulf@free.fr) Received: from postfix2-g20.free.fr (postfix2-g20.free.fr [212.27.60.43]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 97BFE13C44B for ; Wed, 28 Nov 2007 10:14:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from paulf@free.fr) Received: from smtp8-g19.free.fr (smtp8-g19.free.fr [212.27.42.65]) by postfix2-g20.free.fr (Postfix) with ESMTP id 48E071FA644C for ; Wed, 28 Nov 2007 08:54:23 +0100 (CET) Received: from smtp8-g19.free.fr (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smtp8-g19.free.fr (Postfix) with ESMTP id 76C1217F540 for ; Wed, 28 Nov 2007 10:55:13 +0100 (CET) Received: from imp6-g19.free.fr (imp6-g19.free.fr [212.27.42.6]) by smtp8-g19.free.fr (Postfix) with ESMTP id 64DF517F54C for ; Wed, 28 Nov 2007 10:55:13 +0100 (CET) Received: by imp6-g19.free.fr (Postfix, from userid 33) id 15FCB4282; Wed, 28 Nov 2007 10:55:13 +0100 (CET) Received: from nat-frg.mentorg.com (nat-frg.mentorg.com [212.208.136.162]) by imp.free.fr (IMP) with HTTP for ; Wed, 28 Nov 2007 10:55:12 +0100 Message-ID: <1196243712.474d3b005a98f@imp.free.fr> Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2007 10:55:12 +0100 From: Paul Floyd To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org References: <54db43990711271701y1560e358odd3d601402cd07b6@mail.gmail.com> <474D252B.4010003@gmail.com> In-Reply-To: <474D252B.4010003@gmail.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit User-Agent: Internet Messaging Program (IMP) 3.2.5 X-Originating-IP: 212.208.136.162 Subject: Re: Any Update on HP Workstation Support? I (probably) have most of the pieces necessary to do some tests: one HP workstation (an xw9400) affected with the smap problem one old PC with several OSes on it, including a working installation of FreeBSD 6.2-stable I don't have any experience in developing FreeBSD kernel code (or, I guess in this case, the boot loader code). Does anyone have a potted guide to betting started with cross-compiling the boot code and building a boot CD (or floppies)? Of course, I only went searching for this *after* I slogged through trying to add FreeBSD support to signal_x86_64.c (diff attached in case anybody wants it). Then the build started dying in the rpc code because it was being compiled 64-bit. If it is truly the case that wine must be built 32-bit, then is it possible to setup a 32-bit FreeBSD in a chroot someplace, and build/install the relavant ports there? Also, on a somewhat related note, is Linux emulation (of 32-bit ELF) on par with i386 these days? Specifically, I want to build the Haskell compiler GHC on my system. (My answer about the regular way to port it on the GHC mailing list has not been anwered yet.) I have a working 32bit GHC-6.8.1 available. I managed to compile a sample program to i386 object code. But I did not manage to link it. I used the script as32 #!/bin/sh /usr/bin/cc -Xassembler -32 $* as a replacement for the assembler, and got so far. I did not succeed in working out an equivalent 32bit ld. #!/bin/sh /usr/bin/cc -Wl,-m,elf_i386_fbsd,-L,/usr/lib32 does not really work, because it tries to link /usr/lib/libgcc.a, crt1.o and other 64bit programs instead of the right ones. -- Dipl.-Math. You need to explicitly list all the 32 bit versions of all those 64 bit libraries it's trying to link in. Once you do that, it'll work. There have been notes here indicating that the resulting binary won't run on a 32 bit system because of the differences in library locations, but I haven't verified it. http://www.mired.org/consulting.html Independent Network/Unix/Perforce consultant, email for more information.
