If I specify JAVA_OPTS="-server" in catalina.sh, I get a lot of this during server startup: org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: Attribute "null" was already specified for element "null". (Consequently Tomcat can't process the server.xml configuration file and promptly dies.) If I don't specify -server, it starts up fine with no parsing problems. The -server option doesn't seem to give trouble with the Windows 1.5.0_12 VM, so I suspect this is a VM bug with Tigris. As I built the JDK with GCC 4.2.1, and used 3.x in the past, I'm going to try compiling with 3.x to see if that makes any difference. I'll post the results after that is done. If you look at the compile line for the original poster, there is a -I/usr/local/include before the -I../../../src/share/native/sun/font/t2k (which is where the cpu.h the compile is looking for lives). This is the header that defines fastInt, so the compile dies without that definition. The fix will be to reorder the include directories so that -I/usr/local/include is last (if anyone wants to try and patch it before I get a chance). -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jul 29 22:50:04 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 02AF116A419 for ; Sun, 29 Jul 2007 22:50:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd@spatula.net) Received: from turing.morons.org (turing.morons.org [208.96.51.42]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EA39F13C458 for ; Sun, 29 Jul 2007 22:50:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd@spatula.net) Received: by turing.morons.org (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 88B0717034; Sun, 29 Jul 2007 15:49:59 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.morons.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 49ABE17033 for ; Sun, 29 Jul 2007 15:49:59 -0700 (PDT) Date: Sun, 29 Jul 2007 15:49:59 -0700 (PDT) From: Nick Johnson X-X-Sender: spatula@turing To: java@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <20070729123750.C82369@turing> Message-ID: <20070729154135.U82369@turing> References: <20070729123750.C82369@turing> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Cc: Subject: Re: SAX problems with server VM with patchset 6 X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 29 Jul 2007 22:50:04 -0000 Recompiling the JDK with gcc 3.4.6 made the problem go away. I guess the moral of the story is if you see strange behaviour from one VM or the other, and you've compiled with gcc 4.2, that might be the reason why... and you may need a recompile with gcc 3.4. Unfortunately I lack the technical knowledge of gcc and the jvm to even begin to speculate as to why this particular problem appeared. It could also just be some bizarre fluke of the way the compile went the first time and any recompile may have similarly resolved the problem. I am not, however, particularly inclined to burn another 2:11:14 compiling again to test this hypothesis. It should not break anything because it is optional and turned off by default. If you are brave enough, please test it. The easist way to reset the option is to remove saved options, i.e., rm -rf /var/db/ports/jdk15 and to select browser plugin support from option dialog again. Hoever, let me remind you that it does not fix generic plugin problems, i.e., if it had any problem on i386, it should have the same issue on amd64. Often, this is due to a better alternative having become available and/or the cessation of development on the existing port. In some cases, ports are marked for removal because they fail to build and install correctly from their sources, or otherwise fail in operation. The ports listed in this email are ports that depend on one or more of the ports that are scheduled to be removed, but are not yet themselves on the list. However, once those ports are removed, these ports will then become broken, and thus the reason for this email. Jung-uk, I did 'make config' to enable the plugin option and then 'portupgrade -f' to rebuild the port and now I'd like to thank you very much! I've just tested the plugin with native firefox (on amd64, of course) and everything is OK. Be advised, there are nasty bugs in the NIO connector in 6.0.13 that can make form interaction very unreliable. Tomcat does not use the NIO connector by default. http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=42996 has a bit more detail. 6.0.14 (not yet released, but there's a link to binaries in that bug) fixes these problems. The problem I saw may be related to this bug as well: http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=42701 Anyway, just wanted to let folks know so nobody else has to spend hours trying to figure out if it's a Tomcat problem, a jsvc problem, a FreeBSD JDK problem, etc etc etc. It's a problem that doesn't tend to appear on localhost, but does appear going across the network. It's not a problem with the FreeBSD JDK. Nick -- "Courage isn't just a matter of not being frightened, you know. It's being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway." FreeBSD is a superior system for the causal system administration tasks that I need to perform. The operating system is rev'd as a single, integrated source tree ("/usr/src") shared with a wide community of users who ensure that it is robust and "battle-tested". With the combination of the ports system, almost any open source package that I care to use can be downloaded, compiled, dependency checked, and installed. I run on FreeBSD as a development platform, as it gives me the feeling of=20 stability, familiarity with what we used to work back in school years (SunO= S=20 BSD), the feeling that it is here to stay, the serious attitude of the peop= le=20 in the FreeBSD world, + plus it fits best the developer with a unix=20 background who likes to understand whats done behind the scenes. Talking about java, back in 1.4 days, not many OSs had the easiness for the developer to browse thru the JDK java sources as in FreeBSD. (Well back then building from source was the only option, but had a benefic= ial=20 side effect!) > - do you consider Java on FreeBSD fast? Yes > - do you consider it stable/reliable? Three Rings made a very early decision to move to FreeBSD as our primary game server platform -- FreeBSD provides us with a solid, rigorously engineered operating system, and FreeBSD 6's stability has proven phenomenal, especially as compared to our early experiences with Linux. While Solaris is a fantastic operating system, the ability to more easily and directly contribute to FreeBSD has been to our significant advantage. Additionally, Solaris' archaic userland is a significant encumbrance to administration; That said, this situation may be improved by both OpenSolaris and Ian Murdock's Project Indiana. > - do you consider Java on FreeBSD fast? We have an extensive production deployment of Java/FreeBSD, handling all of our corporate and production services, including game servers for Puzzle Pirates, Bang! Howdy, and Whirled. We have absolutely no complaints regarding JVM or FreeBSD performance, and have been consistently impressed with FreeBSD's improving SMP performance on larger, multi-core systems. > - do you consider it stable/reliable? Java on FreeBSD has become very reliable. When we first deployed Java 1.4, we submitted a couple fixes for critical issues -- resolver thread safety, handling of ECONNRESET in getsockname(). Future releases have proven to be stable and reliable, but it's also comforting that we can interact directly with the developers and easily submit fixes for inclusion in future releases. > - do you consider it secure? It's more secure now thanks to Sun's new JIUL-licensed (Java Internal Use License) source releases. Prior to the JIUL/JRL, SCSL source releases would not be made for every patch level. This often meant that bug fixes needed to be independently developed, applied, and released. With the new JIUL licensed releases, source drops are readily available and easily deployed, and the BSD Java team does an excellent job of quickly updating the BSD patchset. > - which version of Java are you running? java version "1.5.0_12-p6" > - was the installation of Java easy or a pain? (or somewhere in > between?) With the availability of "diablo" binary releases, installation, as well as bootstrapping of local builds, is very easy. > - how important is Java 1.6 for you? We will need Java 1.6 eventually, but we can't move to 1.6 features now -- it's not available for our Mac OS X developers (myself included). As I understand it, Greg Lewis is planning on releasing an initial 1.6 FreeBSD patchset soon (if it hasn't been already) -- we'll plan on an eventual, limited 1.6 deployment as it is made available for both FreeBSD and Mac OS X. As usual with the first patchset for a release, this patchset may be a little rough around the edges. Its considered beta and shouldn't be used in a production environment. Having said that, it feels more solid than the first patchsets for previous JDK releases and should generally work fairly well. A special note of thanks to Kurt Miller for getting HotSpot running so smoothly for this release. The following platforms are supported by this release: FreeBSD 6.2/i386 (or later) FreeBSD 6.2/amd64 (or later) OpenBSD 4.0/i386 (or later) OpenBSD 4.0/amd64 (or later) The patchset can be downloaded at: http://www.eyesbeyond.com/freebsddom/java/jdk16.html Please download and test the jdk16 port framework from http://people.freebsd.org/~glewis/jdk16.tgz This port will be committed following a short feedback period for testing. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 3 08:30:17 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A382D16A417 for ; Fri, 3 Aug 2007 08:30:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jonc@chen.org.nz) Received: from drone1.qsi.net.nz (drone1-svc-skyt.qsi.net.nz [202.89.128.1]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4082613C45B for ; Fri, 3 Aug 2007 08:30:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jonc@chen.org.nz) Received: (qmail 12487 invoked by uid 0); 3 Aug 2007 08:30:15 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO chen.org.nz) ([202.89.146.5]) (envelope-sender ) by 0 (qmail-ldap-1.03) with SMTP for ; 3 Aug 2007 08:30:15 -0000 Received: by chen.org.nz (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 85C737E85D; Fri, 3 Aug 2007 20:30:14 +1200 (NZST) Date: Fri, 3 Aug 2007 20:30:14 +1200 From: Jonathan Chen To: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org Message-ID: <20070803083014.GB73563@osiris.chen.org.nz> References: <20070803053142.GA4434@misty.eyesbeyond.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20070803053142.GA4434@misty.eyesbeyond.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.3i Cc: Subject: Re: JDK 1.6.0 patchset 1 "Brumby" X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 03 Aug 2007 08:30:17 -0000 On Thu, Aug 02, 2007 at 10:31:42PM -0700, Greg Lewis wrote: > > On behalf of the BSD Java Porting team, I'm pleased to announce the > availability of Patchset 1 "Brumby" for JDK 1.6, based on the > JDK 1.6.0 JRL source code. First of all Thanks to the FreeBSD Java Team for making this all happen ... i do believe though i have encountered a bug that i am not sure how to debug from here and would appreciate some assistence on: ---------[ Foo.java ]---------- import java.net.Socket; import java.io.*; class Foo { public static void main(String[] args) { Socket sock; try { sock = new Socket("172.16.30.1", 10485); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } ----------[ End of Foo.java ]---------- After compiling Foo.java running it gives me the following output: java.net.SocketException: Invalid argument at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.socketConnect(Native Method) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.doConnect(PlainSocketImpl.java:333) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.connectToAddress(PlainSocketImpl.java:195) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.connect(PlainSocketImpl.java:182) at java.net.SocksSocketImpl.connect(SocksSocketImpl.java:366) at java.net.Socket.connect(Socket.java:519) at java.net.Socket.connect(Socket.java:469) at java.net.Socket.(Socket.java:366) at java.net.Socket.(Socket.java:179) at Foo.main(Foo.java:11) As far as i can tell i am not doing anything wrong in the code myself but it seems impossible to actually create a simple Socket object in the native jdk16 port at this time. It was clear that Force10 needs to sign up a Trademark license agreement with Sun. But, I am not sure if I also have to execute a commercial license too. I am trying to connect to a Linksys NSLU2 that provides a socket interface to communicate with a serially connected measuring device. I ensured that the other end is listening because a plain simple "telnet 172.16.30.1 10485" connects me to our software and allows me to communicate with the measuring device. What i am expecting to happen is to simlpy get connected and no SocketException being thrown which is exactly what happens when i build and run the exact same code using the Diablo JDK 1.5. -- Pascal Hofstee
