As a newbie, during this "grace/waiting period", I would like to seek any guidelines and advices from all forum members for the best current practices to install, configure, and fine tune FreeBSD (in this case, 7.0) for laptop/mobile computing, which in in this thread, Lenovo Thinkpad T60. Submission Deadline Extension !!! *** Abstract Submission: June 6, 2008 *** *** Full Paper Submission: June 16, 2008 *** http://www.computing.dcu.ie/ecows08 The European Conference on Web Services (ECOWS) is the premier = conference for both researchers and practitioners to exchange the latest = advances in the state of the art and practices of Web Services. The main = objectives of this conference are to facilitate the exchange between = researchers and practitioners and to foster future collaborations in = Europe and beyond. The success encountered by the Web has shown that tightly coupled = software systems are only good for niche markets, whereas loosely = coupled software systems can be more flexible, more adaptive and often = more appropriate in practice. Loose coupling makes it easier for a given = system to interact with other systems, possibly legacy systems that = share very little with it. Web services are at the crossing of distributed computing and loosely = coupled systems. When applications adopt service-oriented architectures, = they can evolve during their lifespan more easily and better adapt to = changing or unpredictable environments. When properly implemented, = services can be discovered and invoked dynamically using non-proprietary = mechanisms, while each service can still be implemented in a black-box = manner. This is important from a business perspective since each = service can be implemented using any technology, independently of the = others. What matters is that everybody agrees on the integration = technology, and there is a consensus about this in today's middleware = market: customers want to use Web technologies. Despite these promises, = however, service integrators, developers, and providers need to create = methods tools and techniques to support cost-effective development and = the use of dependable services and service-oriented applications. Topics of Interest ------------------ The ECOWS 2008 program committee seeks high quality papers related to = all aspects of Web Services, which constitute the current main = technology available for implementing service-oriented architectures and = computing. Topics of interest to the Research Track include, but are not = limited to, the following: * Life-Cycle of Web Services Implementations * Dynamic Web Services * Semantic Web Services * Economics and Web Services * Quality Requirements for Web Services * Web Services for Grids * Web Services in a Service-Oriented Environment * Web Services and Mobility * Frameworks for Building Web Service-Based Applications * Formal Methods for Web Services Research Paper Submission Guidelines ------------------------------------ We solicit papers with a maximum of 10 pages, containing new material. = Submissions must be in English, must be original, and must not have been = submitted for publication elsewhere. There will be an award for the best = paper and best student paper. Submissions should be made through the = website. As in the previous years, we plan to publish the ECOWS 2008 Proceedings = with IEEE Computer Society Press. Technical papers must be conform to = the IEEE paper guidelines which will be made available at the ECOWS 2008 = web page. Submit your paper in PDF or Postscript format via the = electronic submission system which will be made available via the ECOWS = 2008 web site. I bought a 1720 recently. I am using it for my FreeBSD development. One thing I notice with it is that the screen connection is not perfect. I question how well it will last given that it sometimes needs to be wiggled to get the screen connection right. Buyer beware! Things that work: DVD, Display (Nvidia with the nv driver in Xorg), USB, Wireless, Network, Audio. Things that aren't supported: webcam, winmodem. Things I haven't tried: firewire, flash card reader, Nvidia binary driver. I got the 1720 not long before making the trip to BSDcan and I haven't had time to spend playing around with the bits and pieces. It works well with DTrace on FreeBSD and I was able to use it for presentations at Yahoo and BSDcan. -- John Birrell From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Fri May 23 18:24:27 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 475F21065670 for ; Fri, 23 May 2008 18:24:27 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jhugo@meraka.csir.co.za) Received: from marge.meraka.csir.co.za (marge.meraka.csir.co.za [IPv6:2001:4200:7000:3:206:5bff:fe55:a834]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BD4A48FC19 for ; Fri, 23 May 2008 18:24:26 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jhugo@meraka.csir.co.za) Received: from jeep.meraka.csir.co.za (jeep.meraka.csir.co.za [IPv6:2001:4200:7000:3:211:43ff:feba:aff1]) by marge.meraka.csir.co.za (Postfix) with ESMTP id 29FA878C51 for ; Fri, 23 May 2008 20:24:23 +0200 (SAST) From: Johann Hugo Organization: CSIR To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Date: Fri, 23 May 2008 20:24:23 +0200 User-Agent: KMail/1.9.7 References: <003801c8bacb$cb9ed290$62dc77b0$@net> <20080521014748.GA62522@what-creek.com> In-Reply-To: <20080521014748.GA62522@what-creek.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200805232024.23257.jhugo@meraka.csir.co.za> Subject: Re: Dell InspironT 1720 X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 23 May 2008 18:24:27 -0000 On Wednesday 21 May 2008, John Birrell wrote: > Things that work: DVD, Display (Nvidia with the nv driver in Xorg), > USB, Wireless, Network, Audio.
