You must upgrade to at least Java 5 update 20 or Java 6 update 15 as soon as possible. Freenet has disabled any plugins handling XML for the time being, but this includes searching and chat so you should upgrade ASAP! See http://www.cert.fi/en/reports/2009/vulnerability2009085.html for details. Also, please do not use Thaw or Freetalk. The UPnP plugin is enabled, it might present a risk if you have bad guys on your LAN, but without it Freenet will not be able to port forward and will have severe problems. You may want to use OpenJDK port, probably that will solve your problem. I may try java/openjdk6 first as it seems it will become the long term solution for the BSD's, maybe others. It also seems more up to date with its parent train, openjdk6, which seems maybe a fine effort by that new bsd-port group. Also the 'current' patch files available for 1.5 and 1.6 at eyesbeyond appear to be older than the last 'numbered' patches, which is misleading. This could probably be made to fail more gracefully since I'm pretty sure the java/jdk16 package can only be made available from a locally built port, not as an official distributed package. Maybe dependant ports should have an option to just run 'java || exit' and say, ok prereq met. Maybe they do, I haven't got that far yet :) # pkg_add ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-8-stable/All/vuze-4.2.0.2_1.tbz Fetching ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-8-stable/All/vuze-4.2.0.2_1.tbz... A freshly installed openJava6 however partly displays ugly looking fonts (netbeans, IDEA shows the same sympthoms). I tried to dig some information on java font propertiesconfiguration: http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/intl/fontconfig.html =46rom that I thought that copying fontconfig.bfc from 1.6.0_03-p4 will do the job. It is not. I tried also to copy fontconfig.properties.src as fontconfig.properties (putting aside *.bfc). It did not helped either. Can someone shed light on how to reconstruct the "original" lookout of fonts? It would be nice to have them as default config, too. With the following tutorial at [1] and the troubleshooting section in [2], I've successfully managed to run the Java SAPGUI under recent FreeBSD i386/amd64 (see screenshot at [3]). I had a little bit of trouble at first, since the JDK/JRE from the FreeBSD Foundation did not even manage to bring up the graphical installer. The recent java/linux-sun-jre16 did not work either (port is outdated and unfetchable, newer jre-update does not compile), so I asked miwi@ for help. He gave me the required jre-6u3-linux-i586.bin for testing purposes and with that version SAPGUI is running now. Since this is only a temporary solution, I would like to ask you for help in getting a recent version of the JRE from the FreeBSD Foundation (with proper licensing) working with the SAPGUI. I think this would be a nice addition to FreeBSD, giving it a more professional touch when it is capable of running ERP software. I'm aware that this is a platform/solution that is not officially supported by SAP (it works nonetheless). :) There is also a howto in the FreeBSD Forum [4], but it is using the java/linux-sun-jre15 port, which is nearing its end of life (EOL) at the end of October. My questions is whether anyone of you is already working on this and how we should proceed? I'm willing to do tests and give feedback from a live SAP system. If we get a working version with the JRE, I can also add an article or handbook section to the FreeBSD handbook (pending the approval of doc@, of course). I appreciate your help. Thanks in advance. After a whole day work with NB6.7 there was no crash here. Once it got so slow, that it needed a restart. But repeating TestNG test runs a lot had no such effect. No wonder that openJDK is less polished (and is somewhat behind in performance wise) than our good old Sun JDKs. Unfortunately my need of using openJDK6 stems from the bug which exists in Sun JDKs before update10 (on Windows as well): in DatatypeCoverter from JAXB an internal member of DatatypeCoverterInterface of this class is not initialized and method calls result in NPE. I could not find a workaround (usage of NB is obligatory).
