Yes we know about that problem but as far as we know virtualbox on current is broken in more ways at the moment with the current version in ports 3.1.8 and the upcoming 3.2.2 version that beat will commit soon. We will investigate the problems on current after 3.2.2 has landed in the ports tree. -- Bernhard Froehlich http://www.bluelife.at/ From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 7 10:56:30 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 56B401065672 for ; Mon, 7 Jun 2010 10:56:30 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from decke@bluelife.at) Received: from mail.itac.at (mail.itac.at [91.205.172.9]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0C1B08FC0A for ; Mon, 7 Jun 2010 10:56:29 +0000 (UTC) Received: from [91.205.172.21] (helo=webmail.bluelife.at) by mail.itac.at with esmtpa (Exim 4.63) (envelope-from ) id 1OLa0K-00064m-8f; Mon, 07 Jun 2010 12:56:29 +0200 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Date: Mon, 07 Jun 2010 12:56:29 +0200 From: Bernhard Froehlich To: zaxis In-Reply-To: <28793596.post@talk.nabble.com> References: <28793596.post@talk.nabble.com> Message-ID: <775766f711c601ec470d82a173dabf83@bluelife.at> X-Sender: decke@bluelife.at User-Agent: RoundCube Webmail/0.4-beta X-Spam-Score: -0.3 (/) X-Spam-Report: Spam detection software, running on the system "mail.itac.at", has identified this incoming email as possible spam. It looks like you don't care about our time because with just 2 minutes of searching you would have found the answer yourself. http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Editions VirtualBox is available precompiled (PUEL) from Sun/Oracle for Linux/Windows/MacOSX and has some additonal features like VRDP, USB, USB over RDP as described on the wiki page above. There are also the sources of VirtualBox available under GPLv2 that is called VirtualBox-OSE (OpenSource Edition) that do not have VRDP, USB but since 3.2.0 they include an VNC server. Some Linux distributions contain both the PUEL and the OSE version and have the exact same limitations. There is no PUEL version for FreeBSD yet as it is only available for platforms that Sun/Oracle supports. -- Bernhard Fröhlich http://www.bluelife.at/ From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 7 11:06:52 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A7F951065677 for ; Mon, 7 Jun 2010 11:06:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (unknown [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 968568FC2B for ; Mon, 7 Jun 2010 11:06:52 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id o57B6qMJ008604 for ; Mon, 7 Jun 2010 11:06:52 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id o57B6qSQ008602 for freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 7 Jun 2010 11:06:52 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 7 Jun 2010 11:06:52 GMT Message-Id: <201006071106.o57B6qSQ008602@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: gnats set sender to owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Current problem reports assigned to freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 07 Jun 2010 11:06:52 -0000 Note: to view an individual PR, use: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=(number). This is not Daisuke's patch, but something from the VirtualBox developers with a different set of options and more importantly no support for keyboard layouts other than the US one (and probably no support too for the AltGr modifier key which is mandatory for international keyboards). I will also see in the next weeks if i can adapt my patch for this VNC implementation. I can boot a blank VM with the FreeBSD install CD and proceed with installation, but the problem occurs during the first reboot of the installed system. I've no troubles with VM guests using Linuxes (CentOS, Ubuntu, Red Hat) or Windows (XP, 2008). With some additional debug messages, i've seen that the problem happens in /etc/rc.d/mixer: http://old.nabble.com/file/p28823754/panic2.png So, i put a mixer_enable="NO" in /etc/rc.conf and was able to complete the boot sequence. Unfortunately, a few commands later, even doing a simple "ls", the VM panics again. I tried with a generic kernel instead of a custom one, and an unmodified VirtualBox port, but got the same results. Any idea? Are there other people encountering this? Best regards, Hubert PS: if needed, i can provide root access to an Internet server where the problem happens, to the vbox team. PPS: i haven't filed a PR for this, but can do if wanted. -- View this message in context: http://old.nabble.com/Panic-with-FreeBSD-Guest-in-FreeBSD-VirtualBox-host-tp28823754p28823754.html Sent from the freebsd-emulation mailing list archive at Nabble.com. I have FreeBSD 5.5-RELEASE guest running under VirtualBox 3.1.6-OSE on FreeBSD 8.0-STABLE i386 32 bit (built from the April 27th cvs) on a dual Xeon 2.0Ghz (total of 4 cores in the system) running on an Intel Server motherboard. This uses a dual set of Seagate 250GB PATA disks running on a FreeBSD ata software RAID. The 5.5 guest runs a billing software called billmax. Besides Vbox this server runs apache2, mysql5, mod perl, mod ssl, vnc server, xrdp, the latest X, python, php4, icradius, HaCi and netdot, plus a couple hundred other dependent programs that support all of that. And I'm even looking to load more crap on it. Never had a single problem with it. I love it, it's my favorite server. And I even have a copy of rogue running on it. It may be dependent on the systems settings i use. Come to think about it the GENERIC 8.0p3 kernel i tested upon was compiled with some optimizations (CFLAGS+= -mtune=k8 -mmmx -msse -msse2 -msse3 -mfpmath=sse). I will run a test with default compilation options. However, i don't plan to use FreeBSD i386 hosts because most of our servers have more than 4 GB RAM. Yes the VNC patch was contributed by another person. We have also informed Daisuke about this and i think he said that he will try to merge his patch (which I think is more advanced then the current one) so that his work can also be included. -- Bernhard Froehlich http://www.bluelife.at/ From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 9 14:49:00 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 365DA1065670 for ; Wed, 9 Jun 2010 14:49:00 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from rnejdl@ringofsaturn.com) Received: from tethys.ringofsaturn.com (tethys.ringofsaturn.com [71.252.219.43]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 072808FC08 for ; Wed, 9 Jun 2010 14:48:59 +0000 (UTC) Received: from ASSP.nospam (tethys.ringofsaturn.com [71.252.219.43]) (authenticated bits=0) by tethys.ringofsaturn.com (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id o59Emu0h053597; Wed, 9 Jun 2010 09:48:56 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from rnejdl@ringofsaturn.com) Received: from mail.ringofsaturn.com ([71.252.219.43] helo=mail.ringofsaturn.com) with IPv4:25 by ASSP.nospam; 9 Jun 2010 09:48:51 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Date: Wed, 09 Jun 2010 09:48:51 -0500 From: Rusty Nejdl To: Hubert Tournier In-Reply-To: <28827156.post@talk.nabble.com> References: <28823754.post@talk.nabble.com> <4C0F22F0.8070401@mittelstaedt.us> <28827156.post@talk.nabble.com> Message-ID: <1ff5d6f7820bf2f9a55e306a072de641@ringofsaturn.com> X-Sender: rnejdl@ringofsaturn.com User-Agent: RoundCube Webmail/0.4-trunk Cc: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Panic with FreeBSD Guest in FreeBSD VirtualBox host X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 09 Jun 2010 14:49:00 -0000 >> > > Hum. I am running a FreeBSD client that I plan to test clang inside of and it has no issues booting. The only thing I had to do different was use FTP passive when installing since it is NAT'd. I am using an Intel Core i7 920. I also run UBuntu 32bit, Fedora 64 bit, OpenSuse 64bit, Open Solaris 32bit, XP, and Windows 7. I am using only this CPU customization in /etc/make.conf CPUTYPE?= nocona I hope that helps. The port will need to be updated. In the meantime, you can try downloading the new tarball and using that with the port. You will need to update the size and checksums in the makefile ("make makesum" will do that, if I recall correctly, but you can check in "man ports" to be sure). > i have tryed to install it as a package but it failed too. Right. There are no packages of it; we're not allowed to distribute it. Which also explains why the file isn't available from our own master ftp site, either.
