If someone would make any more modifications necessary and return it to me, I might be able to get it in. It would be good to have a section on SCO compatiblilty and BSDI compatibility as well. I'm currently very busy with other things at the moment. I might be able to do some assembling, but no creating. -john == jfieber@indiana.edu =========================================== == http://fieber-john.campusview.indiana.edu/~jfieber ============ From owner-freebsd-doc Wed Oct 25 13:40:21 1995 Return-Path: owner-doc Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) id NAA12951 for doc-outgoing; Wed, 25 Oct 1995 13:40:21 -0700 Received: from WDMA01.WDC.COM (wdma01.wdc.com [129.253.144.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) with SMTP id NAA12922 for ; Wed, 25 Oct 1995 13:40:13 -0700 Message-Id: <199510252040.NAA12922@freefall.freebsd.org> Received: with SMTP-MR; Thu, 26 Oct 1995 04:34:37 SST Date: Wed, 25 Oct 1995 21:28:00 SST From: "TERENCE KHOO 7705722 Fax: 7771812" Subject: FreeBSD Handbook To: DOC@FREEBSD.ORG MIME-version: 1.0 Content-type: TEXT/PLAIN Posting-date: Wed, 25 Oct 1995 21:30:00 SST Importance: normal Priority: non-urgent X-Hop-count: 1 A1-type: MAIL Sender: owner-doc@FREEBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk Hi Document Manager, I hope you can answer this question for me. The reason why I say this is groff just can not produce nice output. Yes it can do postscript, but the output it awefull compared to a good latex page. The way I work it is that I get sgmlfmt to spit out LaTeX and then I hand trim for final release, works like a charm and gives me the BEST output I've seen. Gary P.S. I think it might be a good idea for someone who understands our version of the linuxdoc DTD to write up a basic instruction manual (example.sgml??) as our version is different:) -- Gary Clark II (N5VMF) | FreeBSD support and service gclarkii@FreeBSD.ORG | mail info@gbdata.com for information FreeBSD FAQ at ftp.FreeBSD.ORG in ~pub/FreeBSD/docs/freebsd-faq.ascii From owner-freebsd-doc Thu Oct 26 14:27:48 1995 Return-Path: owner-doc Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) id OAA27174 for doc-outgoing; Thu, 26 Oct 1995 14:27:48 -0700 Received: from fieber-john.campusview.indiana.edu (Fieber-John.campusview.indiana.edu [149.159.1.34]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) with ESMTP id OAA27165 for ; Thu, 26 Oct 1995 14:27:42 -0700 Received: (from jfieber@localhost) by fieber-john.campusview.indiana.edu (8.6.12/8.6.12) id QAA02718; Thu, 26 Oct 1995 16:24:47 -0500 Date: Thu, 26 Oct 1995 16:24:47 -0500 (EST) From: John Fieber To: Gary Clark II cc: doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Manual in printed form In-Reply-To: <199510261619.JAA11844@freefall.freebsd.org> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-doc@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk On Thu, 26 Oct 1995, Gary Clark II wrote: > John, I would prefer to stick with LaTeX for printing vice groff! > The reason why I say this is groff just can not produce nice output. Agreed, BUT, adding decent groff support by no means implies that TeX/LaTeX support must be dropped! I just think that it should be possible to generate decent postscript on an out-of-the-box system. > P.S. I think it might be a good idea for someone who understands > our version of the linuxdoc DTD to write up a basic instruction > manual (example.sgml??) as our version is different:) The DTD fundamentally the same. In fact, the only user noticable difference I can think of off the top of my head is is the addition of a tag. What is needed is to just remove all the installation and "how to generate output in format X" cruft. On the other hand, the linuxdoc DTD is a real mess that I'd like to wash my hands of. I got a start on a docbook to html translator but have gotten rather busy with other stuff lately and progress has stopped. :( -john == jfieber@indiana.edu =========================================== == http://fieber-john.campusview.indiana.edu/~jfieber ============ From owner-freebsd-doc Thu Oct 26 21:16:07 1995 Return-Path: owner-doc Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) id VAA25017 for doc-outgoing; Thu, 26 Oct 1995 21:16:07 -0700 Received: from fieber-john.campusview.indiana.edu (Fieber-John.campusview.indiana.edu [149.159.1.34]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) with ESMTP id VAA24991 for ; Thu, 26 Oct 1995 21:15:54 -0700 Received: (from jfieber@localhost) by fieber-john.campusview.indiana.edu (8.6.12/8.6.12) id XAA00780; Thu, 26 Oct 1995 23:15:48 -0500 Date: Thu, 26 Oct 1995 23:15:47 -0500 (EST) From: John Fieber To: "TERENCE KHOO 7705722 Fax: 7771812" cc: DOC@freebsd.org Subject: Re: FreeBSD Handbook In-Reply-To: <199510252040.NAA12922@freefall.freebsd.org> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-doc@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk On Wed, 25 Oct 1995, TERENCE KHOO 7705722 Fax: 7771812 wrote: > I hope you can answer this question for me. No, but you can get an ascii version, or download all the html files as one gziped tar file which you can browse on your own machine (although it won't work on an MS-DOS machine because of filename restrictions). I would disagree. I much prefer reading troff output than tex, though that could simply be a factor of the way the default macro packages behave. TeX documents tend to oversized text, inconsistent headers and footers, and while Computer Modern is a pleasant enough typeface it doesn't benefit at all from our 600 dpi laser printers. You can quite likely get better results from TeX if you work at it, but it's much easier to get acceptable output from troff.
