Here is what I have done so far (in order): 1. Downloaded boot.flp and rawrite.exe from ftp.freebsd.org 2. Made the boot floppy 3. Rebooted and started the installation program I followed the instructions on how to install it exactly, and here is what happens: "Unable to copy 'bin man dict', wasn't found on media type you chose" or something to that effect, and then says "Could not find kernel image, you'll have a hard time putting this on your hard disk I'm afraid!". What did I do wrong? From reading the instructions at http://www.freebsd.org, I thought that was all I needed to do. Someone please point me in the right direction. Hubbard" Sender: owner-doc@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk First off, my apologies for taking so much time with this. I got side-tracked into writing code. :-} Thanks to everyone who stepped forward during this latest call for volunteers - this actually marks the beginning of the FreeBSD Documentation Project as a complete, organized group of volunteers! Wow! :-) Seriously, I'm very happy to see this project staffed and off to such a promising start. I also think that the SGML framework which John has put together, along with lessons learned from the existing web pages and online docs, give this group a much better starting point than it ever had a year ago (eyeballs roll back in head at the memory). I think there's room to do some really interesting stuff here, and I'm sure that General John Fieber's also not going to go away entirely so much as now be free to use his time more strategically in the service of FreeBSD's DocBook migration (among other things), which would be good. [ The following information will also be going into the handbook. A follow-up message as to what exactly all this *means* in more practical terms will also follow this one; this is just the roster ] "Gloria, the envelope please." In all cases, where a Deputy position is filled, the individuals are assumed to share the responsibilities in some way, the least of which should include the deputy taking over whenever the principle is unavailable. Primary Webmaster: Ade Barkah Deputy Webmaster: Paul Richards 2nd in command to Docmaster (John Fieber) and generally in charge of making sure that all the separate tasks which go into making the web pages live get done. Build Engineer: Paul Richards Deputy BE: Dave Cornejo Arrange for building the "live" web pages from the CVS repository on a daily basis. A good working knowledge of SGML is essential. The current setup uses Makefiles and some moderately advanced SGML features to generate the pages that get posted on server. Mirror Manager: Ulf Zimmermann Deputy MM: John Cavanaugh Direct mirroring activities. Set up and maintain mirroring mechanism(s), keep in regular contact with mirror administrators to negotiate changes, such as running various CGI scripts on mirrors rather than on the master site. Set up criteria for being listed as an "Official" mirror on the home page. News Editor: John Cavanaugh News Reporter: Nate Johnson Track new release, important changes and other news (eg: monitor the freebsd-announce lists). Maintain the "Release info" and "Newsflash" pages. A weekly or bi-weekly "Whats new with FreeBSD" summarizing interesting developments in or related to FreeBSD would be a great addition, but a fair amount of work. Gallery/Commercial Editor: "Charles A. Wimmer" Deputy GCE: Ricardo AG Receive and verify submissions for the FreeBSD Gallery and the Commercial Vendors pages. Weed dead links and periodically verify the use of FreeBSD by those listed. Style Police/Art Director: Dave Cornejo Deputy SPAD: Chris Watson Ensure consistent and effective use of layout, graphics and logical structure of the site as a whole. Assist other WWW developers in implementing the "www.freebsd.org look and feel". A background in HCI, with a focus on electronic text and graphic design, is *extremely* desirable. Handbook/FAQ/Tutorial Editor: Peter da Silva Deputy HFTE: TBD Solicit new materials, arrange for updating of obsolete sections, mundane style editing. Good technical writing skills essential (since hackers are notoriously terrible writers). A familiarity with the "novice user" is also helpful. Scanning the freebsd-questions list is a must to keep in touch with what should be in the FAQ. A broad familiarity with FreeBSD/Unix/X11 is more important than a deep familiarity. Database Engineer: Mark Mayo Deputy DE: Martin Cracauer Manage (and hopefully improve) the mailing list archives and web page searching. CGI Engineer: Martin Cracauer Deputy CGIE: TBD Watch over CGI functionality, such as cvsweb and gnats. There is great potential in developing a cgi interface to the ports too. Other: Nate Johnson A variety of other pages (eg Support) don't neatly fit in the above categories. Someone needs to watch over these. More to follow later, this is (again) just the roster. Thanks! Most everyone on this list should have (a) and account on freefall (and spatter after the web service migrate) and (b) have either cvs commit rights to the www tree *or* arrange for a proxy who has such rights. If neither of these are case, begin negotiation with Jordan. The News Bureau and Advertising Division (gallery/commercial) have things they can easily get started on immediately. Next, I've taken the liberty of adding everybody to the freebsd-www@freebsd.org mailing list. Third, I'm always available as an SGML consultant. Fourth, What you see on www.freebsd.org comes out of the CVS repository. At 4:00am freefall time, every day, a `build' copy of the pages is updated from the repository. The pages are then built (via makefiles, similar to the freebsd distribution itself) which mostly involves passing the HTML files through an SGML validator/normalizer, and generating various things that don't exist natively in HTML (handbook, FAQ, tutorials, ports pages, server stats...). This is all installed in a temporary directory and indexed. If all went well, the new tree is swapped in and the old tree swapped out (but not deleted until the next build, so there is always disaster recovery). Generally, if someone commits some bogus HTML or something, the build will abort at which point I fix it and (depending on the importance of the change) manually start a rebuild or let it wait until the next time around. Fifth, to ensure mirrorability, all URLs (except a few cgi-generated rogues) are relative. This means that you can easily install a test copy of the pages in your own ~/public_html directory for testing. In fact, if you checkout the www tree and do a `make install', that is where it ends up by default (in a `data' subdirectory actually, so it doesn't spam your home page). If you want to do this "at home", in addition to a stock freebsd distribution, you will need James Clark's SP package, which includes the SGML normalizer/validator. This is a critical component as the normalizer allows us to utilize a number of valuable, sanity saving SGML features that cannot be used with existing HTML browsers. I have a port of this, but have yet to submit it to the ports collection because of some rough edges (eg installing documentation). You also need the HTML dtds, which I think I should just commit to the cvs tree for convenience. Additionally, if you have a 2.1.6 or earlier release, you will also need to pick up a couple things from current: src/usr.bin/sgmlfmt src/usr.bin/sgmls src/share/sgml Do the appropriate `make all install' and you should be on your way. If you want postscript/ascii generation of the handbook/FAQ/tutorials to work right, you also need the groff mm macros from current. > Mirror Manager: Ulf Zimmermann > Deputy MM: John Cavanaugh First task assignment: Find out who is the webmaster for the mirrors currently listed on the home page and get their email addresses added to the freebsd-www@freebsd.org mailing list. Second would be to draft a mirroring policy (Thou shalt run FreeBSD and Apache. Thou shalt run cgi scripts. Thou shalt syncronize with the master server once a day) and mechanism document (Warren's rsync currently). This should be an HTML document in the tree, replacing the current README.html. > Gallery/Commercial Editor: "Charles A. Wimmer" > Deputy GCE: Ricardo AG I've got a huge backlog of gallery entries and one commercial entry update. Shall I forward them? How soon can arrange to have requests go directly to you? (Adding them requires (1) making sure they don't already exist in the list, possibly under a different name, (2) verifying that they indeed either use or support FreeBSD.) If the gallery continues growing at the rate it is now, we may have to re-evaluate its existance and membership criteria. > CGI Engineer: Martin Cracauer > Deputy CGIE: TBD Somewhat mirror related, figure out how many of the existing mirrors can run the cgi scripts in the current web pages (http://www.xx.freebsd.org/cgi/ftp.cgi?foo is a simple check, it either returns a page of FTP links, or an error). There are some scripts that could/should be run on the mirrors rather than exclusively on the home server. We need to get mirror cooperation on this. -john From owner-freebsd-doc Thu Dec 12 15:42:45 1996 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.4/8.8.4) id PAA18449 for doc-outgoing; Thu, 12 Dec 1996 15:42:45 -0800 (PST) Received: from u2.bbrown.com (U2.BBROWN.COM [192.30.147.97]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.4/8.8.4) with SMTP id PAA18418; Thu, 12 Dec 1996 15:42:28 -0800 (PST) From: PEKARSKE_BOB/TUC_01@burr-brown.com Received: from by u2.bbrown.com with SMTP (1.38.193.5/16.2) id AA23798; Thu, 12 Dec 1996 16:36:43 -0700 X-Openmail-Hops: 2 Date: Thu, 12 Dec 96 16:39:00 -0700 Message-Id: <"d03Iw/u000000000*"@MHS> Subject: Not clear where to turn To: doc@freebsd.org, questions@freebsd.org, www@freebsd.org Sender: owner-doc@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Please forgive me for "spamming" the three addresses that looked like they might have real people attached to them. If you're interested in installing FreeBSD, take a look at ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/2.1.6-RELEASE/INSTALL.TXT Also consult the questions@freebsd.org list, my usual domain, with any questions or problems during installation, general sysadmin, or anything in between. 50% of the available documentation is available via the Web at http://www.freebsd.org. The other half is in the system 'man' pages which you may be familiar with; just type 'man ' for a summary. If you want to plug in somewhere else, we can certainly use you! Most system topics have an associated mailing list; the Handbook (on the web pages) has the list of interesting lists. If there's anything else you need, feel free to send mail to questions@freebsd.org or myself (please observe the reply-to if sending to me, gdi doesn't currently exist on the net at the moment). Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-doc@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Good Morning, I've been a user of FreeBSD since 2.0.5 was released. Since then I have become pretty familiar with the system. I've set up numerous machines on 2.1, 2.1.5, and now 2.1.6 both at work and at home. I've also set up many packages, ports, and system programs (such as user-level ppp, etc.) I would like to volunteer for the documentation project. I've done technical writing before, and would really like to help make documentation specific to freebsd more readily available. I want to give something back to the FreeBSD community, as it has been so good to me. I started setting up a FreeBSD-related web page awhile back, but had to put it on hold due to some work-time restraints. I've recently gained some free time again, and would like to work with the documentation project, rather than scatter more info on a new site. As far as specific knowledge goes, I am familiar with the following: Installation I've done many installs, and many in-place upgrades of systems. System configuration Compiling the kernel to support installed hardware. Installation and configuration of system daemons; wu-ftpd, xinetd, apache, ssh, etc. General system configuration, including package and port installation, as well as non-port-software installation. Network configuration Configuration of ethernet-internet systems. Configuration of User-level PPP for both static and dynamic IP, as well as manual and dial on demand. Configuration of gateway systems to route information from ppp link to machines on local ethernet segment. As well as many other aspects of installing, upgrading and maintaining FreeBSD systems. I work at an ISP as a systems programmer and administrator. I am familiar with the day-to-day operation of FreeBSD, as well as running internet services such as sendmail, apache, anonymous ftp, etc. on FreeBSD. The web page I was working on (still unfinished) can be reached at: http://pinky.interaccess.com/jay/freebsd/index.html An example of technical documentation I've written is available at: http://pinky.interaccess.com/jay/freebsd/ppp.html It is a 'how-to' about describing set-up of user-level PPP in dial-on-demand mode with a dynamic IP. Thank you for your attention. I look forward to hearing from you. Jay Kuri --- Everyone can be taught to sculpt: Michelangelo would have had to be taught how not to. Cc: rdd@digex.net Sender: owner-doc@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Greetings, Thanks very much for providing what appears to be a rather nice flavor of UN*X. Aside from SCO UNIX and XENIX (which I've tried to avoid, except for supporting clients using those), UN*X on IBM type PC's is something that I've not had much experience with. Well, I did give Linux a try, but coming from using mostly SunOS, PNX, Ultrix, SystemVR2 and a few others over the years, Linux just didn't seem quite right. Faced with the need to install a flavor of UNIX for an IBM type PC network, for an introductory course on UNIX that I'll be teaching this coming spring, I decided to give FreeBSD another try (the last time that I tried FreeBSD, I had some installation problems with a 4MB system -- this works great now!). All that I've installed thus far has been the binary files, but, so far, I like what I see. :-) I didn't install the manpages, docs, etc. yet due to a lack of disk space in the MS-DOS (bletch) partition, which I need, since a CD-ROM isn't available, and I've not installed an ethernet board yet in this PC -- I'll install those next. One question: is there any chance that the old "learn" program will be implemented? That's one of the ways that I learned about UNIX... while experimenting after the the "here are your user IDs and passwords, if you need any help, you might want to try the man and apropos commands -- oh, by the way, the first programming project's due Monday. Have a good weekend." I think that's nicest way to learn about UNIX. :-) Regards, R. D. Davis
