Yes, top is very system-dependent and needs to be re-compiled after re-making the world (ps is similar, but 'make world' handles this automatically). If you're upgrading from 2.1.0-RELEASE, your best bet is to get the latest version from ports-current, as this has been kept coordinated with all the system changes. -- James Raynard, Edinburgh, Scotland jraynard@dial.pipex.com james@jraynard.demon.co.uk From owner-freebsd-stable Tue May 21 10:52:34 1996 Return-Path: owner-stable Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id KAA13644 for stable-outgoing; Tue, 21 May 1996 10:52:34 -0700 (PDT) Received: from capella.grayphics.com (root@capella.grayphics.com [205.235.35.2]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with SMTP id KAA13639 for ; Tue, 21 May 1996 10:52:33 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from nick@localhost) by capella.grayphics.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) id KAA10297; Tue, 21 May 1996 10:52:39 -0700 Date: Tue, 21 May 1996 10:52:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Nick Esborn To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Subject: ix0 problem fixed in stable? This chipset is used in the SMC PCI cards, and most if not all of the DEC PCI cards, as well as lot of cheaper clones (ex. Compex). I can manage to log in (by hitting ^J after typing my password instead of ENTER), but once I'm in the keyboard is all messed up. Many keys produce nothing except a beep, making it impossible to do anything. Fortunately, the letters 'e', 'x', 'i', and 't' function, so I'm able to log out (hitting ^J for ENTER, of course)... :-) If I dial in using a Windows box, everything works fine, so I'm led to think that the problem lies with the stty or termcap settings on my local end (which I haven't modified from the defaults). I've dug through the stty man page, and nothing jumps out at me. I've observed similar (but much less debilitating) behavior over telnet connections. Specificly, if I telnet into another FreeBSD box and run pkg_manage, I must use ^J in place of ENTER. And, if I run pine, ^O (suspend new message) doesn't work at all. So, what might the solution be? I'm sure this problem has been faced before... Sender: owner-stable@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hello, I'm having a problem with an Adaptec 2940UW after moving from FreeBSD 2.1.0-release to FreeBSD-stable. There were no problems while using 2.1.0. During bootup the 2940UW gets detected. Then waits for the SCSI devices to settle. While finding the devices, it just hangs with the HD led on. It doesn't hang on the same device everytime. After several boots it manages to completly boot only to hang after using it for a while. Everything is working fine after booting with the old kernel. Any ideas anyone? If you are going to do a cron entry, just have it run once a week to grab anything new. There are various "commit" mailing lists that you may want to join, as well, that basically send out announcements as to what new things have been added (or any changes) to both the -current and -stable kernels (as well as ports). Basically, if something comes across one of those lists that you need today, just perform a manual sup to update your tree. As far as setting up a supserver on one of your machines, check out ftp.freebsd.org:/pub/FreeBSD/sup/sup-server-kit.tar.gz, which should have everything you need to get setup Marc G. "stable" doesn't change all that often. Mostly it depends on how often YOU want to look at the changes. At most, daily is more than adequate. Some days there are no changes. If you intend to maintain a tree on a regular basis, may I recomend than you consider 'ctm'? For the 2.1 tree (aka stable), I mail out a daily update if there are any changes. You can choose to have them applied automatically or can hold them to be applied manually. IMHO, this has the advantage that it changes from a "pull on demand" to a "push when ready" mode of operation. CTM is also more efficient in that it sends just the changes rather than the whole file. I'll be happy to assist in the conversion. On a slowly changing tree, there are ways to trick the system to avoid re-fetching the entire tree. I then went to recompile my kernel. In the process, I made the appropriate adjustments to the ahc line to make it work with -stable (as per earlier postings here) and added the iBCS2 and Linuc compatibility options. The compile went fine and the machine booted fine with the new kernel. However, when the machine tried to establish it's ppp link via pppd (something that's never been a problem before) it would dial in OK and would appear to start establishing the links (it even made the appropriate routing table entries) and then the connection would drop. The following is from /var/log/messages: May 24 01:34:29 prozac pppd[239]: pppd 2.1.2 started by root, uid 0 May 24 01:34:53 prozac pppd[240]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cuaa1 May 24 01:34:56 prozac pppd[240]: input: Unknown protocol (80fd) received! Do you have an option to disable the boot time bus reset in SCSI-Select? One thing I notice in your dmesg output is that the card did not perform a bus reset before probing for devices and that may be your problem. I added code a few revisions ago to honor the information in the SEEPROM that tells us to reset the bus or not. On my 2940UW, I can't change the bus reset value via SCSI-Select (its always on), but that may only be a limitation of the BIOS rev (1.21) I have on my card. If you can't change this value, try the following patch and see if it solves your problem. The dmesg output should say "Reseting channel A" either way. -- Justin T. I'll try to get it after mailing thing. How about some pointers on getting it and using it in case I get stuck. I have made some progress with this problem. I disabled the wide negotiation for all the devices on the internal narrow SCSI bus with SCSI-Select. I am now able to boot all the time with the new -stable kernel. It is also up and running fine, except I cann't mount, or do much after a succesful mount, any device on the narrow bus without problems and error messages. I have been able to boot off of sd1, only with the same problems of hanging during boot or hanging while running. Here is my SCSI buses in case you need to know: Internal wide SCSI bus: Seagate ST15150W - id 0, sd0 Internal narrow SCSI bus: Fujitsu 2624A - id 3, sd1 Iomega 150 Multidisk - id4, sd2 Plextor CD-ROM - id5, cd0a BTW, what happens if you connect something to the external wide bus while both internal buses are connected? The manual only says, "DO NOT DO IT!". I hope it just won't work, instead of frying things. > ^^^<= It didn't give you a number here? Yes it did. A typo, sorry.
