I tried to understand those old manuals the year before last and wondered what was wrong with me, then wanted to do the right thing and buy the old BSD books recommended in the Handbook. Only a few weeks ago I discovered the tutorials. I agree. Kill off all the old crap or at least make it very clear what it is for, and give us more pointers to the good work that people are doing today. -- Regards, -*Sue*- find / -name "*.conf" |more To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Mon Apr 13 03:54:34 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id DAA25205 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Mon, 13 Apr 1998 03:54:34 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from time.cdrom.com (root@time.cdrom.com [204.216.27.226]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id KAA25159; Mon, 13 Apr 1998 10:54:28 GMT (envelope-from jkh@time.cdrom.com) Received: from time.cdrom.com (jkh@localhost.cdrom.com [127.0.0.1]) by time.cdrom.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id DAA07174; Mon, 13 Apr 1998 03:54:37 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jkh@time.cdrom.com) To: Wolfram Schneider cc: Studded , doc@FreeBSD.ORG, jkh@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: tutorials In-reply-to: Your message of "13 Apr 1998 12:25:31 +0200." Traditionally this would exclude "manpage"-related PRs, being limited to the tutorials, FAQ, and handbook. The separation has always seemed kind of strange to me... I am familiar with the "the programmers should document the programs" argument, but the same argument can be made equally well for a lot of the material covered by the handbook and the tutorials. Does anyone on the -doc list actually object to being more consistent and treating all doc PRs the same way? Particularly in the long-term, I think, a lot of the problems with the handbook/FAQ apply to the manpages, too. As an example of their inter-relation, consider ports(7), which relates to not one, but two sections of the handbook. -- tIM...HOEk OPTIMIZATION: the process of using many one-letter variables names hoping that the resultant code will run faster. If you have the CD you can read them off the CD. If you need further help, please reply to freebsd-questions@freebsd.org. SGML Tools v2.0 will consist of a framework around things like Jade, DocBook, PSGML and so on, along with associated user guides and tutorials, exactly the sort of thing we don't currently have (but badly need). My involvement has been severely curtailed over the past two weeks due to continuing RSI (pain in my hands which makes any typing difficult), and I think it's important that someone follow the discussions and provide a FreeBSD point of view where necessary. I'd appreciate some help to check the web page which is temporarily at http://ahimsa.welearn.com.au/work/index.html (or newbies.html for the same with relative links) 1. Let me know if you spot any errors or can suggest improvements 2. If it refers to your work, please make sure it does so correctly 3. Can someone organise to get it onto the FreeBSD web site? 4. How would I go about updating it? This page does duplicate some information available elsewhere, but it highlights the most appropriate resources from a newbies perspective and provides a single entry point for self-help at an appropriate level. -- Regards, -*Sue*- find / -name "*.conf" |more To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message
