The approach I think that could be taken for the manpages is not necessarily to treat DocBook as a translation but as the _source_ for all the other translations, including the *roff that could still be used (for efficiency's and compatibility's sake) on the actual system. I would require quite a bit of initial investment but would really pay off when our handbook would come attached to and be able to cross-reference within itself to all of our standard manpages. A lot of people hate it, but it seems there are some that like it (I've not encountered an actual example of these 'someones' yet, but I see it profilerating everywhere, so they should exist...) It has the huge advantage to be buildable very cleanly. You get everything you may want from a TeX installation (formats, packages, fonts) in a TDS-compliant package. You don't have to fetch packages manually, complie web2c then generate formats, everything is done automatically. Very easy. I'd say that teTeX is the FreeBSD's way of doing TeX :) > Finally, it fails to build not finding a language.dat file for French. > Merde. Weird. I use an early snapshot of teTeX 0.9 (9809xx something) and I was able to put French language into it. But it is not correct. 1) file(1) command does not have -h option, while symlink(7) manpage says that file(1) has -h options. 2) file(1) command does not follow symbolic links named as command line arguments by default, while symlink(7) manpage says that ``Except as noted below, commands follow symbolic links named as command line arguments.'' 3) file(1) command does follow sumbolic links named as command line arguments if -L option is specified. ``man 7 symlink'' says: [snip] Commands not traversing a file tree. The second area is symbolic links, specified as command line file name arguments, to commands which are not traversing a file tree. Except as noted below, commands follow symbolic links named as command line arguments. For example, if there were a symbolic link ``slink'' which pointed to a file named ``afile'', the command ``cat slink'' would display the contents of the file ``afile''. It is important to realize that this rule includes commands which may op- tionally traverse file trees, e.g. the command ``chown file'' is included in this rule, while the command ``chown -R file'' is not. This interface, like its predecessor allows the system administrator to dynamically add and remove functionality from a running system. This ability also helps software developers to develop new parts of the kernel without constantly rebooting to test their changes. .Pp Various types of modules can be loaded into the system. There are several defined module types, listed below, which can be added to the system in a predefined way. In addition, there is a generic type, for which the module itself handles loading and unloading. .Pp The .Tn FreeBSD system makes extensive use of loadable kernel modules, and provides loadable versions of most filesystems, the .Tn NFS client and server, all the screen-savers, and the .Tn iBCS2 and .Tn Linux emulators. Modules distributed with the system are found in the .Pa /lkm directory. All of these are in the process of being converted to .Nm modules, which will be placed by default in the .Pa /modules directory. .Pp The .Nm interface is used through .Xr kldload 8 , .Xr kldunload 8 or .Xr kldstat 8 programs. .Pp The .Xr kldload 8 program can load either .Xr a.out 5 or ELF formatted loadable modules. The .Xr kldunload 8 program unloads any given loaded module, if no other module is dependent upon the given module. The .Xr kldstat 8 program is used to check the status of the modules currently loaded into the system. .Sh "MODULE TYPES" .Bl -ohang .It Em "Device Driver modules" New block and character device drivers may be loaded into the system with .Nm KLD . The major problem with loading a device driver is that the driver's device nodes must be exist for the devices to be accessed. They are usually created by using .Xr MAKEDEV 8 or .Xr mknod 8 (if the device is not supported by the .Xr MAKEDEV 8 script) or, by writing a shell script to run .Xr kldload 8 which should run the appropriate program to create the devices when the driver has been successfully loaded. .El .Sh FILES .Bl -tag -width /usr/share/examples/kld -compact .It Pa /modules directory containing module binaries shipped with the system .It Pa /usr/include/sys/module.h file containing definitions required to compile a .Nm module .It Pa /usr/share/examples/kld example source code implementing a sample kld module .Sh SEE ALSO .Xr kldload 8 , .Xr kldstat 8 , .Xr kldunload 8 .Sh BUGS If a module B, is dependent on another module A, but is not compiled with module A as a dependency, then .Xr kldload 8 fails to load module B, even if module A is already present in the system. .Pp If multiple modules are dependent on module A, and are compiled with module A as a dependency, then .Xr kldload 8 loads an instance of module A when any of the modules are loaded. .Pp If a custom entry point is used for a module, and the module is compiled as an 'ELF' binary, then .Xr kldload 8 fails to execute the entry point. .Pp .Xr kldload 8 returns cryptic ENOEXEC (Exec format error) for any error encountered while loading a module. .Pp When system internal interfaces change, old modules often cannot detect this, and such modules when loaded will often cause crashes or mysterious failures. .Sh AUTHORS The .Nm facility was originally implemented by ?? .Sh HISTORY The .Nm facility appeared in FreeBSD 3.0 and was designed as a replacement for the .Xr lkm 4 facility, which was similar in functionality to the loadable kernel modules facility provided by .Tn SunOS 4.1.3. >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sun Nov 8 20:53:14 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id UAA09048 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Sun, 8 Nov 1998 20:53:14 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from MAIL1 (mail1.indosat.net [202.155.15.21]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id UAA09039 for ; Sun, 8 Nov 1998 20:53:07 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from joe_fp@ucsd.com) Received: from ucsd.com - 202.155.16.29 by indosat.net.id with Microsoft SMTPSVC; Mon, 9 Nov 1998 11:57:05 +0700 Message-ID: <364674EC.2701BC7@ucsd.com> Date: Mon, 09 Nov 1998 11:51:57 +0700 From: Merapi Internet X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.04 [en] (Win95; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: subscribe Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org subscribe To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sun Nov 8 20:55:26 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id UAA09163 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Sun, 8 Nov 1998 20:55:26 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from MAIL1 (mail1.indosat.net [202.155.15.21]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id UAA09155 for ; Sun, 8 Nov 1998 20:55:17 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from joe_fp@ucsd.com) Received: from ucsd.com - 202.155.16.29 by indosat.net.id with Microsoft SMTPSVC; Mon, 9 Nov 1998 11:59:25 +0700 Message-ID: <36467589.FA64E916@ucsd.com> Date: Mon, 09 Nov 1998 11:54:33 +0700 From: Joe Fivara P X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.04 [en] (Win95; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: subscribe Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org subscribe To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sun Nov 8 21:06:25 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id VAA10292 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Sun, 8 Nov 1998 21:06:25 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from saffron.fsl.noaa.gov (saffron.fsl.noaa.gov [137.75.253.44]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id VAA10287 for ; Sun, 8 Nov 1998 21:06:19 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from kelly@plutotech.com) Received: from plutotech.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by saffron.fsl.noaa.gov (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id WAA12233; Sun, 8 Nov 1998 22:05:20 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from kelly@plutotech.com) Message-ID: <3646780D.2A505CC8@plutotech.com> Date: Sun, 08 Nov 1998 22:05:17 -0700 From: Sean Kelly Organization: Pluto Technologies X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.07 [en] (X11; I; FreeBSD 2.2.7-RELEASE i386) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Ollivier Robert CC: doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: TeX problems; Doc. This isn't the question (you edited it out). The question was: can groff generate pdf output? From what I can see, it can generate PostScript or DVI directly, so the obvious way would be to convert the DVI to pdf. I suspect that pdftex is a script which runs TeX and then an appropriate DVI driver, so we could use the driver for groff-generated DVI as well. I don't have pdftex on my system. Where do I find it? Your page: http://www.freebsd.org/FAQ/FAQ.html has been selected to receive a Links2Go Key Resource award in the FreeBSD topic! The Links2Go Key Resource award is both exclusive and objective. Fewer than one page in one thousand will ever be selected for inclusion. Further, unlike most awards that rely on the subjective opinion of "experts," many of whom have only looked at tens or hundreds of thousands of pages in bestowing their awards, the Links2Go Key Resource award is completely objective and is based on an analysis of millions of web pages. During the course of our analysis, we identify which links are most representative of each of the thousands of topics in Links2Go, based on how actual page authors, like yourself, index and organize links on their pages. In fact, the Key Resource award is so exclusive, even we don't qualify for it (yet ;)! Please visit: http://www.links2go.com/award/FreeBSD to find out more about this award, and to download graphics if you wish to display this award on your page. Once again, congratulations on your award! Links2Go Awards awards@links2go.com P.S. If you are not the author or maintainer of this page, please accept our appologies. At the suggestion of a fellow subscriber to the FreeBSD Questions mailing list, I'm sending this to you for a possible entry into the FAQ. This message deals with setting up APS Filter to work with a remote printer running from, in my case, an HP JetDirect EX Plus box. The particular printer in question is an HP DeskJet 870CXi, but the method I used below should work with any parallel printer that can connect to the JetDirect. One thing I didn't mention in the message below, since it had already been discussed previously, but would be required to be present in the FAQ, is that I edited the apsfilter script in /usr/local/apsfilter/bin and uncommented (took the pound sign off the front of) a line that read: #REMOTE_PRINTER=true Everything else I did is outlined in the message below the message from "Symmetron's FreeBSD Mailing Lists". If you feel this would be a good thing to have in the FAQ, please feel free to add it. Thank you! ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 10:08:26 -0500 From: Symmetron's FreeBSD Mailing Lists To: Bryce Newall Subject: RE: APS Filter/JetDirect report Hey, thanks for figuring this one out! Next time I get a few minutes free, I'm going to try to setup one of my boxes. Maybe you should send your findings to the documentation people at freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org so that they can put it in the FAQ. -john -----Original Message----- From: owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG [mailto:owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG]On Behalf Of Bryce Newall Sent: Tuesday, November 10, 1998 2:01 AM To: FreeBSD Questions List Subject: APS Filter/JetDirect report It finally works!!!!!!!!!! Now that the excitement is done, please allow me to describe what was required to get it going: 1) Thanks to some people on this list, reading the APSFilter FAQ, and some insights from (of all places) one of the Linux How-To's, I got a working printcap. In addition to changing the "lp" entries to point to /dev/null, I needed to add an additional printcap entry as follows: remote|remotep|JetDirect EX Plus:\ :lp=/dev/null:\ :rm=runabout:\ :rp=raw:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/remote:\ :lf=/var/spool/lpd/remote/log:\ :mx#0:\ :sh: where "runabout" is the hostname of my JetDirect. Once that was done, I tried another printout.. a simple one, my .login file. Instead of getting my .login, though, I got a single line printed out on the printer that said: -r must be followed by or x Which leads to... 2) Upon looking at the apsfilter script, I found where it was trying to add the -r parameter in this section of the script: (this is kind of long) if [ -z "$GS_RESOL" ] then # default is _not_ to fiddle around with # ghostscripts printer driver resolution PRINT_PS=" gs \ -q \ -sDEVICE=${PRINTER} \ -sPAPERSIZE=${PAPERSIZE} \ -dNOPAUSE \ -dSAFER \ -sOutputFile=- \ ${GS_FEATURES} \ ${PS_INIT} \ - " else # if we urgently need another resolution # then we use it (selectable in /etc/apsfilterrc # or in $HOME/apsfilterrc) PRINT_PS=" gs \ -q \ -r${GS_RESOL} \ -sDEVICE=${PRINTER} \ -sPAPERSIZE=${PAPERSIZE} \ -dNOPAUSE \ -dSAFER \ -sOutputFile=- \ ${GS_FEATURES} \ ${PS_INIT} \ - " fi I don't know how it's happening, but somehow the GS_RESOL variable is being set, but to a blank value, so that it's trying to call apsfilter with the -r option, but nothing after it. The solution was to simply pull out the line with the -r, and after that, I'm now printing and having a great time of it! I realize this mail is probably somewhat superfluous, but at least if anyone has trouble with this in the future, well... here's your solution! :) And who knows, maybe this will end up in the mailing list archives. It'd trivial to fix, anyway; just load the GIF in xv, hit 'e' to enter the color editor, middle-click on one of the gray areas (say, the top right corner) to select the correct color and sett the red, green and blue dials to 255. I have a fixed copy at the following URL: Of course, the Right Way (tm) to fix it is to mark that color (index 0) transparent; the only program I know of which can do that is giftrans. Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi I'm working on a tutorial (The FreeBSD User Guide). http://www.lowrent.org/freebsd/ I just checked www.debian.org. Since one year, that site changed a lot. First, I was surprised to see that site in French! (I "accidentaly" setted the "languages" preference in Netscape to French(fr), without knowing what it would do). Surprise! debian.org use that cool feature. see (http://www.debian.org/intro/cn.html.en) It's near FreeBSD quality :-) see (http://www.debian.org/~elphick/ddp/) On another topic: I would like to allow many peoples to work on TFUG, since I think it's a viable project. I don't know what solutions I could use. First: should I port it to SGML? I never used SGML. The main problem (if you see it) is that it's not really portable to anything else than HTML I think. It use a lot of tag, special colors... I use "GTML" to generate style/colors and the NEXT HOME BACK link at the top and bottom. Now it's simple for me to respect the style of it since all is automated when I generate the script. I could even automate
tag. "GTML is an HTML pre-processor" And it's in perl. (http://www.firststep.com.au/software/gtml.html) my .gtm files are available on the site in the gtml directory. Second: How could I let people adding text to it but respecting the style of it. What are the tools available to share it and let them submit new work and corrections? CVS? Or simply e-mail with diff?
