Drat! ;) I was feeling adventurous so I just went out and got the Intergraph Intense3D Voodoo Rush card today, a combined 2D/3D card which will save me a PCI slot (a precious resource) on the day that Xi Graphics supports the Alliance Semiconductor AT25 chip. They support a number of the earlier Alliance line, so hope springs eternal. In the meantime I'm simply using both cards at once which works fine. Windows95 uses the Intense3D card and FreeBSD (well, the X server) the Matrox Millenium. Since I don't switch between the two environments very often, physically switching the VGA cable is not too painful. It can't handle a single 3D operation (in a window). Voodoo rush can handle lots. Therefor the rush has much better performace. :-) :-) Quake isn't the ONLY thing you can use 3D accelerators for, ya know. Loosing a little fps in fullscreen can easilly be worth it if you gain it back elsewhere (VRLM, etc). Not that that has any real support under XFree86, though. :-( Anyone know if there are any plans to build in openGL or something, in XFree86? I have used GLUT and XI Grpahics OpenGL w/ Accelerated X, but it has no accelerated harware support. They said they plan to accelerate Voodoo, Fire GL, and possibly Oxygen stuff. The recommendation was clear : get a Voodoo based board similar to Diamond Monster 3D . We should be able to render VRML in a window using Voodoo based boards just read about it in the Mesa web page. I mean, like the sound automatically going to your local machine, even though you are logged in through ssh to another machine, and are running a sound application there. Just like the graphics is automacically transfered by setting DISPLAY right (which ssh does for us, as we know). And explain "NCD's nas"? :-) There are six unknown letters in there I don't get. I don't think Xfree is going to be a big help in that matter :) The problem with AGP is that the programming specs are available under NDA only. That's the real bummer. If you program the RIVA correctly you can support the DAC and access the video display memory, but you won't get the main benefit of 528MB/sec access to main system memory, which is the whole point of the new bus. Many large 3D textures take up more space than is available from the video buffer. The buffer is to be used for holding pixel values, and the main system memory used for caching and computing. The latter part is what makes the RIVA worth using. Hopefully I am wrong, but I have yet to hear anything edgewise. I've used this historically with success. I have a sneaking suspicion about what's wrong. I think maybe I've got the wrong IRQ set in the kernel for this card. I re-built my kernel config file from scratch for 2.2.5 (it dated back to 2.0.5...) and I may have had a brain fart in the process. I'll have to open the box to look at the jumpers on the card. I'm suspicious about this because I wouldn't expect anything to work (remember, I can play '.au' files) if the interrupt was wrong, but I'll let you know. The one patch needed to "make depend" a 3.0-current kernel after the AWE driver patches are applied is to remove this #ifdef block from the top of /usr/src/sys/gnu/i386/isa/sound/awe_config.h: #ifdef __FreeBSD__ # define AWE_OBSOLETE_VOXWARE # if __FreeBSD__ >= 2 # include # if __FreeBSD_version >= 300000 # undef AWE_OBSOLETE_VOXWARE # endif #endif #endif It apparently isn't considered kosher to include some /usr/include files in kernel source. I don't know the full story on this yet. Anyway, for 3.0-current, removing this whole block achieves the desired result (AWE_OBSOLETE_VOXWARE is undefined). I just updated the 3.0-current patch file so that this isn't necessary. Just follow the INSTALL.frbsd instructions in the driver package. I was all set to go update my graphics with the Monster board aka 'Pure3d' by Canopus that you've been talking about. Unfortunately, time has moved on, and my local Fry's does not have this any more. What they do have is a Canopus package called 'True3D', but it appears to have yet another graphics chip on it, the Rendition by Verite. Any comments on its use in a Mesa application? It appears to be an all-in-one board, priced at $159 so it's cheeeeep, and even includes shutter-glasses. The Pure3D looked especially good, as S-Video will give me good videotape output for the ad market, and I like the ability to keep a normal monitor as well as the 3D display screen. That's what I need. Pointers on a good place to buy it? Oh well. Recently, i was using the driver at high speeds (44100,16bit,stereo -- guess where the bits come from...), and at times even in full duplex at that speed. While it mostly worked, I hear some background noise in presence of other disk activity which I am not sure about the cause. So, could you please try and report how my driver (or even guspnp, oss, voxware3.0, ...) work at high speed, and if the use of different drivers makes a difference on the quality of audio ? That would help me a lot in fixing the problem(s) which could be: - electrical interference to the analog circuitry (no fix for this); - interference in interrupt processing or DMA activity due to IDE activity (I am using IDE peripherals); there are some busy wait situations in the wd/wcd/atapi stuff which could affect interrupt processing; - slow/inefficient interrupt processing in the audio driver; Unfortunately I doubt the problem is in the driver: at CD speeds, a byte is consumed every 5.67us, and a 64-byte fifo drains in 360us. It's probably more likely that other system activities increase the irq latency. Thanks Luigi PS: other than unsupported hardware, I know of several bugs in the driver (snd971209), on which I am currently working or have already fixed in the upcoming snapshot of the code: - with sb16, recording has a problem (open does not initialize the device properly, you need to call the AIOSFMT ioctl to do it right; vat works...); - when you start playing from a streaming source which is not faster than the sampling rate, you can hear some noise in the first second or so; this is due to an annoying side effect of the presence of the FIFO inside the audio chip. - in one occasion, having two processes writing to the same audio device caused a reboot (the driver is supposed to detect the occurrence). It still has some problems on the CDU-55E (old model). Note that all these drives do not seem to conform to the ATAPI specs (at least the ones that I have). Mesa has capabilities to render to a window with the 3dfx, but it does not yield the same performance that fullscreen rendering with the 3dfx does. Instead of having the 3dfx do the rendering AND displaying of its framebuffer, the 3dfx does the rendering and Mesa copies the data in the 3dfx framebuffer to your 2D video cards video memory and puts it in a window.
