Notatec said, they would love to help but a) all their staff were tied up with the Win NT driver b) they developed the chipset inside the card themselves. They have some internal design documents on how the chipset works, some details are just comments in their driver and some details of how the chipset works were just in their design staff's heads. So, they had no datasheet they could pass on. Now that was 12 months ago. The situation will be different now. If anywone wants to write a driver, I can give them the email of their engineers in Israel. BTW, it will not be like a Bt848. The PCMCIA bus is a 16 bit bus, more like ISA. Another point. The IBM Smart Capture Card is another video capture card which the FreeBSD PAO drivers support. After weeks of phoning IBM UK, I found they could order me some from Japan (where they sell them) for about 400 UK pounds. I think this is a lost cause since X11Amp is *very* particular about having OSS -- it checks and will complain about a bad sysinfo call. The fragment size bug is fixed in -stable and -CURRENT (and 3.0 for that matter). The required work was to #define JAZZ_DMA16 in sound_config.h, per the SB routine: #ifndef JAZZ_DMA16 #define JAZZ_DMA16 5 #endif I also found that I needed to edit the Makefile for my kernel (in the kernel compile directory) and add "-DJAZZ16" to the IDENT line. For some reason, #options JAZZ16 produced a syntax error when interpreted by config(8). At this point, I had a working kernel, and a kernel that finally supported 16-bit sound for my sound card. Yay! But all was not hunky-dory. It seems that for whatever reason, the kernel doesn't want to let go of the DMA channel. %uname -a FreeBSD ninbox.ml.org 2.2.7-RELEASE FreeBSD 2.2.7-RELEASE #0: Tue Sep 15 06:45:15 CDT 1998 kris@ninbox.ml.org:/usr/src/sys/compile/NINBOX i386 %cat /dev/sndstat cat: /dev/sndstat: Device busy %dmesg (after one working use, one failed) Copyright (c) 1992-1998 FreeBSD Inc. Though it hosed because of color differences, it did run setup the card correctly. I have no doubt that the problem lies in the code, but I am not a professional programmer by any means. /usr/src/sys/i386/isa/sound/sb_dsp.c: static void sb_dsp_close (int dev) { #ifdef JAZZ16 /* Release 16 bit dma channel */ if (Jazz16_detected) RELEASE_DMA_CHN (dma16); #endif DMAbuf_close_dma (dev); sb_free_irq (); dsp_cleanup (); dsp_speaker (OFF); sb_dsp_busy = 0; sb_dsp_highspeed = 0; open_mode = 0; } I have checked all #include files and found no mention of RELEASE_DMA_CHN. In this file there is one other reference to RELEASE_DMA_CHN, but it is in a function. I would like to ammend this problem, as this sound card sounds much better than the OPTi-931 it replaced. Rebooting after one "peep" isn't fun. -- Kris Kirby UAH Mail UAH CS Home WWW ------------------------------------------- TGIFreeBSD... 'Nuff said. I'm using motif (but lesstif seems to work as well). It works quite good right now, but what I really like to see is some kind of automatic channel scanning (as in hauppauges win-apps). So hauppauge does it in their win apps, so I guess the hardware is capable to do so (it even shows the field strength). So, this is a questions to the tuner gurus: Is it possible to implement such a thing into the driver? I'm quite sure, even fxtv could need this. ;) -- Tom To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Wed Sep 16 01:55:24 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id BAA04888 for freebsd-multimedia-outgoing; Wed, 16 Sep 1998 01:55:24 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from fleming.cs.strath.ac.uk (fleming.cs.strath.ac.uk [130.159.196.126]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id BAA04883 for ; Wed, 16 Sep 1998 01:55:22 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from roger@cs.strath.ac.uk) Received: from cs.strath.ac.uk (posh.dmem.strath.ac.uk [130.159.202.3]) by fleming.cs.strath.ac.uk (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id JAA16545 Wed, 16 Sep 1998 09:54:43 +0100 (BST) Message-ID: <35FF7CCB.231C45F5@cs.strath.ac.uk> Date: Wed, 16 Sep 1998 09:54:35 +0100 From: Roger Hardiman Organization: Strathclyde Uni X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.05 [en] (X11; I; FreeBSD 3.0-980520-SNAP i386) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: l.rizzo@iet.unipi.it, multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Looing for full duples stereo sound cards Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, I am looking for a sound card to work with FreeBSD which can give 16bit Stereo Full Duplex. I would suggest getting the same make card as him. If you want the AverMedia card the driver _should_ work. There is some support for one of the AverMedia cards. As long as it has no Stereo Audio decoder chips, and uses a standard Temic or Philips SECAM tuner you should be OK. It may take half a day to configure the driver for your card but it is easily done as long as you have access to Windows 95. Email Vsevolodo first though. bye Roger Hardiman Strathclyde Uni Telepresence Research Group To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Wed Sep 16 02:15:36 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id CAA07640 for freebsd-multimedia-outgoing; Wed, 16 Sep 1998 02:15:36 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from ns1.yes.no (ns1.yes.no [195.119.24.10]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id CAA07623 for ; Wed, 16 Sep 1998 02:15:22 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from eivind@bitbox.follo.net) Received: from bitbox.follo.net (bitbox.follo.net [195.204.143.218]) by ns1.yes.no (8.9.1a/8.9.1) with ESMTP id LAA26033; Wed, 16 Sep 1998 11:14:39 +0200 (CEST) Received: (from eivind@localhost) by bitbox.follo.net (8.8.8/8.8.6) id LAA27519; Wed, 16 Sep 1998 11:14:39 +0200 (MET DST) Message-ID: <19980916111439.57329@follo.net> Date: Wed, 16 Sep 1998 11:14:39 +0200 From: Eivind Eklund To: shar , multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: bt848 References: <35FF6DBC.7F6DFE9F@fwheel.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.89.1i In-Reply-To: <35FF6DBC.7F6DFE9F@fwheel.com>; from shar on Wed, Sep 16, 1998 at 11:50:21AM +0400 Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Wed, Sep 16, 1998 at 11:50:21AM +0400, shar wrote: > Hello! > > Just one question. I have downloaded SLab, a great Linux harddisk recording program with 64 tracks, lots of effects etc. Nevertheless I am afraid that FreeBSD 2.2.6 is not convinced because its Linux emulation makes some problems. SLab 2.20.1R itself runs fine but I get repeated messages "LINUX: ioctl fd=10, typ=0x44d(M), num=0xfb not implemented" and when I want to play (VoxWare drivers), only the data that has been played with other programs before and that still is in the driver buffers can be heard in an endless loop. I have set up /dev/dsp0 and /dev/mixer (WriteOnly) as the only devices. I would be glad if you could help me! Is this error caused by the missing ioctl-call? What does this call do? Thanks a lot! To continue, I also downloaded the new sound.c file from a CVS repository and I rebuilt the kernel and it still doesn't work, I'm starting to think that this is not the right program. So please, tell us where is the real program, the one that doesn't need OSS. Thanks in advance. Bye. On the topic: i have written repeatedly to CreativeLabs to get tech info on the vibra16X but the most useful response that i have got is to divert my request to other addresses, which until now has behaved as /dev/null Given that i have no docs on the 16X, and the new driver is just based on assumptions which might be completely wrong and break at any time, my advice is: DUE TO LACK OF PROGRAMMING SPECS, STAY AWAY FROM SB CARDS if you want an audio card that is reasonably well supported by the native FreeBSD audio driver. I will be happy to change my advice if and when i get the programming info i need. I am Bcc-ing the CL addresses i have just for information. cheers luigi -----------------------------+-------------------------------------- Luigi Rizzo | Dip. di Ingegneria dell'Informazione email: luigi@iet.unipi.it | Universita' di Pisa tel: +39-50-568533 | via Diotisalvi 2, 56126 PISA (Italy) fax: +39-50-568522 | http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/ _____________________________|______________________________________ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Fri Sep 18 05:21:02 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id FAA18822 for freebsd-multimedia-outgoing; Fri, 18 Sep 1998 05:21:02 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from servius.mbfys.kun.nl (servius.mbfys.kun.nl [131.174.173.154]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id FAA18817 for ; Fri, 18 Sep 1998 05:20:56 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from Victor.Langeveld@mbfys.kun.nl) Received: by servius.mbfys.kun.nl via vic@localhost id OAA07112 (8.8.8/1.2); Fri, 18 Sep 1998 14:20:29 +0200 (MET DST) From: Victor Langeveld Message-Id: <199809181220.OAA07112@servius.mbfys.kun.nl> Subject: Hauppauge Win/TV (878) and 2.2.7 anyone? Thanks, I'll check this out. (dynamic range is not a real concern -- it simply needs to be non-irritating to listen too, and as small as possible). > (of course you can pipe it to /dev/audio and get recognizable audio as > well...) The problem is: I now have two formats of files... linear seems to be much easier to work on (when I'm writing the filter programs -- I figured out linear by looking at a graph of part of a file, ulaw is not as obvious). Below is a short C file that converts between linear and u-law. It's handy if you just need to do that, rather than installing sox. Now qcamcontrol gives me (bad) pictures. Bad as they look like a scratched photograph. Strange. I tried xfqcam (with debug=1) and then you see: su-2.01# ./xfqcam -p 0x378 cmd = 0xb, value = 0x9d cmd = 0xb, value = 0x1 cmd = 0xb, value = 0x1 cmd = 0xb, value = 0x9d cmd = 0xb, value = 0x9d cmd = 0xb, value = 0x9d cmd = 0x19, value = 0x20 cmd = 0x1f, value = 0x74 cmd = 0x13, value = 0x50 cmd = 0x11, value = 0xf0 cmd = 0xd, value = 0x1 cmd = 0xf, value = 0x7 cmd = 0x7, value = 0x3 waiting for camera to say "Go!" Without the -p it fails to find the camera. Is there any preference for EPP, ECP etc in the parallel port BIOS setting? I'll do some further experiments. The impression I have so far is that the support for the Bt848 driver is more mature with FreeBSD. Where can I find this stuff now? Also, do I need additional modules to make vic work for Wincast/TV? It's as though the behavior is the reverse of what it should be, e.g. when I pull down a menu, it runs, but when I let go of the menu the picture freezes again. If I place any window slightly over the display, the picture begins moving again. 2) The display has very noticable horizontal scan lines and it jitters when displaying at full size. Maybe this is related to (1)? In any case, if I run dtv-tuner I don't have any of these problems -- the picture is much sharper and the video is smooth at full size. info: bktr0 rev 17 int a irq 9 on pci0:13:0 Hauppauge WinCast/TV, Philips NTSC tuner. xfree86 3.2 S3 video thanks! -david.
