I thought that I could get a better response from here. I recently CVSup'd to FreeBSD 4.0 from 3.4, and now my IDE cdrom dosn't work. I have MAKEDEV'd all the devices, CVSup'd again and made world, i've built several new kernels, and it still dosn't work. I have read that there is problems with some secondary IDE controllers, but this one has worked fine with all previous version of FreeBSD (with the wdc and acd drivers). I can't put it on the primary controller, as I already have 2 HDDs there, and they can't be moved as they are both boot drives (one for fbsd and the other for windoze). What am I doing wrong? or is it a bug that is yet to be resolved? (If so, is there anything at all that I can do to use my cdrom in the mean time?) These circumstances are rather surprising: the problem happens when the machine is rebooted, or when it is suspended and resumed, while AC-powered in both cases. I think that the BIOS does something (God knows what) with the timer, leaving it in some state the FreeBSD's clock initialization routines don't deal with adequately. Unfortunately, I have no info about the PC's timers, so I would be grateful for some help. If someone has any idea about what things could I try, I am willing to test them (I have both 3.4-RELEASE and 4.0-RELEASE installed on the laptop). Also, pointers to docs (or recommendations of books about PC hardware) will be welcome. I come back because finally I installed 4.0-RELEASE on my laptop, so that I could test the new sio(4) dynamic buffer sizing with the Xircom Realport 56 pccard modem, which has a broken 16550 emulation. At 115200, ibufsize is 512, and the buffer overflows still happen. I experimentally determined that the overflows dissapear when I modify the ibufsize computation, doubling the buffer size (i.e., ibufsize=1024 at 115200). Just FYI, Bruce. Cheers, -- JMA **** Jose M. Could someone give me some recommendations on a cheap stable mobo, cpu, nic that I can use to set up configure Freebsd,Nt( need it for work),linux multiple times and in multiple ways until I get it? I can scrounge old hardware but unless you know the person it is hard to know what your getting so i prefer new. Or at least three identical old systems from a reliable vendor so i can make some comparisons. I really want to maximize my learning and immerse myself in freebsd but I don't have a machine I can risk. I hoping to avoid multiple monitors so i would also like to hear peoples thoughts on KVM's that will work with Freebsd.
