I am re-posting it here just in case anyone else has knowledge of the answers. I found the PAO site through the daemon news site and it looked like it might be an answer to my PCMCIA problems. However, as a relative newbie to FreeBSD and Unix style OS's, I thought I would ask first. I will transpose any of dmesg output if that helps any as others may be able to see better what is going on. ******************************************************** PCMCIA Cards, PAO status relative to FreeBSD 4.2-RELEASE ******************************************************** Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop which is currently running FreeBSD 4.2-RELEASE but without the use of the PCMCIA card slots. The pcmcia controller appears to be included on irq11 despite trying to keep it out of the picture and I am inclined to believe that the LCD display is running from it (and maybeinternal sound as well). The BIOS is reportedly based on 1988 vintage Pheonix but with much more recent work by Dell. There are no options for switching off the Plug-and-Play mode and no reportage of IRQ's used by hardware within the BIOS. I leave the CD-ROM drive in the bay and attach the Floppy to the Printer Port connector when I need it. RS232, USB and IrDa ports are enabled in BIOS as sio0, sio2, and sio3 respectively. The pc-card controller reports in as:- pcic-pci0: irq 11 at device 3.0 on pci0 The ATI mobility card is also claiming irq 11. During the initial loading (using Visual facilities) the option for setting the irq for pcic0 was not offered. Trying with the CLI mode for installation set-up got in a muddle with the floppy disk drive and hung the system (maybe my fault there though). I have a choice of cards for the PCMCIA slots. Silicom EtherModem ECM36 - Ethernet 10/100 and 36k Modem. Aztel Fast Ethernet 10/100. Both cards are reportedly NE2000 compatible for the ethernet connection. The Silicom reports as 16550 in other machines (Win95). Either card being inserted will hang the machine. If inserted before power up machine hangs during boot displaying the line "plip0: on ppbus0" as the last item. I install FreeBSD 4.2-RELEASE from the four CD set (November 2000 edition). I am looking for a helpful suggestion. Would changing the configuration files to match the example you give on your web-site (PAO3) be any help to me in this matter? -- ******************************************************************** Paul E. Yes, my pccard.conf entry looks like the one you suggest, though mine comes up as ed0 instead of ed1 because I commented out the ed0 line in the kernel config leaving only the ed line. (Hmm) I deduced the shape from "pccardc dumpcis" output. It's at the next stage that I get into trouble: assigning the physical port a network existence. With either ifconfig ed0 inet nn.nn.nn.nn netmask 0xffffff00 done manually or pccard_ifconfig="inet nn.nn.nn.nn netmask 0xffffff00" in rc.conf, a network routing entry at link#10 appears that looks normal to me. That routing entry then gets joined by a specific address entry when I try to ping an address on the local net. The result of all that success, though, is just a bunch of ed0 timeouts. But yours works... On Sun, Mar 04, 2001 at 05:50:29PM -0800, Jerry Kreuscher wrote: > >>>>> "D" == Dan Welch writes: > > D> Note, version 3 of the card. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I recently has 3.5-PAO running on a Toshiba Libretto 70CT. After reading on the PAO page that PAO is now integrated into RELENG_4 and ".", I upgraded to 4.2 Release. I have a 3C589D working, but the PCMCIA floppy drive and possibly some expansion port features may not be supported any more. The PAO PCMCIA supported devices list is quite good (especially with my wacky little Toshiba devices :-); PCMCIA in the FreeBSD handbook's supported hardware list (and pccard.conf.sample) is much more sparse. So, what is the status of the merge? If I go to STABLE or CURRENT will I get the whole of PAO, or am I recklessly upgrading chasing after code that's not there yet? Or was the package all merged in by 4.2 Release, and I might have some potential breakage issues? If it gets fully integrated, it seems like a real boon to the hardware compatibility list. I believe that the ethernet part works (device dc0 - I haven't actually gotten to try it out yet because Xircom sent me the card with two modem cables and no ethernet cable). I'd like to know if anyone has gotten the modem part of this card working yet. I think that the system sees the card, and the card is used under COM5 in windows, so I believe that it would also be used as sio4 under FreeBSD. I'm pretty sure that I'm missing something in /boot/device.hints for sio4 (there is nothing for sio4 in this file). If I do need to add something to device.hints, what is it that I should be adding? Any hints would be much appreciated. Here is the output of a dmesg: Copyright (c) 1992-2001 The FreeBSD Project. So instead it's appearing as a ugen (generic USB) device. I have a similar problem with my Casio QV3000 camera. I've added it to usbdevs and umass.c, but all the ATAPI code in umass.c is commented out. Until that is functional (or I'm brave enough to uncomment that code) I'm out of luck. If your Imagemate uses the SCSI command set instead of the ATAPI command set you'll be better off. At this point, I'll give my standard disclaimer: DO NOT USE IBM MICRODRIVES IN A USB READER UNDER FreeBSD I've roached two 340MB microdrives by just inserting them. There has been discussion about this being a voltage issue (high startup draw). Standard CF cards work fine, but the IBM drives lose their magic smoke. The IBM drives work fine in a PCMCIA carrier. I installed 4.2 Release as "dangerously dedicated." I've gotten nearly everything working; I got the kernel recompiled to support sound, X is working in 16-bit color, vidcontrol lets me select 80x60 test, and so on with no trouble. The only problem I'm having is that APM seems flaky. When I boot up, I cannot use any of the fn-key combinations (suspend now, battery guage, etc.) until I suspend the unit from the command line (with zzz). After I resume the machine, things seem OK (all the buttons work, for instance). That's one thing that seems flaky. The other thing that seems flaky is that if I let it suspend on BIOS timeout or by closing the lid before a command line suspend, it hangs on resume, apparantly not turning the hard drive back on (judging by the error messages and silence from the drive). This also happens sometimes (about 1 in 10 maybe) even when things otherwise seem OK. The drive itself is new, and BIOS doesn't recognize it at all (says, "Not Installed" and won't hibernate), but it worked ok on Linux (I installed Linux first to make sure the drive worked OK before adding a new OS to the mix of variables). APM has always been stable in Linux. Any suggestions about what I might have done wrong? Or is the APM just old enough that it doesn't play nicely with FreeBSD? I summarized the responses earlier, but that was before I actually received the machine I ordered -- a Compal N38W2, sold by M-Tech as the "M-Tech 30W". I have the machine running FreeBSD (4.3-BETA as of 07 March, another slice is 08 March, and another is 5.0-CURRENT as of 08 March). I upgraded the BIOS, and APM now works. Sound works (though workman doesn't seem to see the CD yet; one of my colleagues suggested that it may be looking at a device other than one that is appropriate, so I'll investigate that). So far, it seems that the touchpad-tap is not distinguishable from the left mouse button (unless refreshing the BIOS fixed that). I'll investigate that further, as time permits, because I dislike chording for the "button 2" function. Further details (>10KB of text, which is why I didn't want to send it to this list directly), along with pointers to various things, including an image of the floppy I used to refresh the BIOS, may be found at http://www.catwhisker.org/~david/FreeBSD/laptop.html. NOTE: If you decide to do anything with that floppy image, it is at your own risk. The site from which I got it points out that if, for whatever reason, something goes wrong with the process, the affected machine can become an expensive doorstop. I took the risk, and it seems to have worked for me; your mileage may vary. It is documented as: FOR USE ONLY WITH INSPIRON 5000e AND COMPAL 38W2 SYSTEMS in the "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file that is part of the flash. Please use this information with an appropriate level of discretion and care. Thanks again, david -- David H. FWIW, my Linksys PCM100 works great on 5.0-CURRENT as of March 3. I think there was a patch committed to make Linksys work better sometime after 4.2-RELEASE. [This is from a -stable email from 11/30/00 titled "Re: Linksys PCMPC100 problem"] Another piece to the puzzle of bad network performance of the Linksys cards is that they're only supported as generic NE2000 cards with 8K of memory by the ed driver. 1.5K are used for the send buffer, 6.5K remain for the receive buffer. This is a shortcoming of the ed driver, since the Linksys cards have 32K of memory. If a sender sends large packets to a Linksys cards (NFS over UDP), the IP fragments arrive too fast and overrun the buffer. The last fragment(s) are lost and the wohle packet is dropped. The patch below fixes a small bug in the ed driver that causes only 8K instead of 16K (as normal for 16bit cards) to be used. However, full support for the Linksys cards should really be added to the ed driver. The code in http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=12088 looks promising, but doesn't apply cleanly due to bitrot. One factor is the PCMCIA bus. You just won't see tens of megabits over that bus. However, 200KBps (~1.6Mbps) is low. (How did you measure that number, by the way?) Does the patch in my other mail make a difference? Also, I found that on some laptops, the PCMPC100 card works much better if you force the PCMCIA controller out of "polling" mode by explicitly assigning it a *free* IRQ in your kernel config file. As an aside: 5-8MB/s is a little low for a switched 100Mbps network for desktops (assuming local TCP transfers). Using netperf, I see around 10MBps (86.43Mbps) on an idle switched 100Mbps net. (Assuming you're not CPU bound, of course). The : code in http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=12088 looks promising, : but doesn't apply cleanly due to bitrot. This patch has been added to -current. How did you create this 'file system'? The right way is to use utility from vaio compact disk(in disk boot image). You can also do this without utility by creating partition with sysid 160(the place on disk is where you want, but the number of partition migth be important - 4th). don't forget about cold reboot... don't use acpica, only apm. -- Bye Juriy Goloveshkin To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Sat Mar 10 9:45:17 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from rip.psg.com (rip.psg.com [147.28.0.39]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A52F637B71A for ; Sat, 10 Mar 2001 09:45:14 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from randy@psg.com) Received: from randy by rip.psg.com with local (Exim 3.16 #1) id 14bnQ0-0007Rz-00; Sat, 10 Mar 2001 09:44:40 -0800 From: Randy Bush MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit To: Samuel Tardieu Cc: Juriy Goloveshkin , Samuel Tardieu , Adam Brown , "mobile@freebsd.org" Subject: Re: Display brightness References: <20010215172949.789024A13@rapier.dicebag.com> <2001-03-08-14-26-09+trackit+sam@ada.eu.org> <20010308212009.A644@avias.com> <2001-03-08-19-23-16+trackit+sam@inf.enst.fr> Message-Id: Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 09:44:40 -0800 Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > Don't you have the drawings I have on my Z600NE on your VAIO? > > Fn-Esc: standby mode > Fn-F3: mute/unmute > Fn-F4 (and shift): volume > Fn-F5 (and shift): brightness > Fn-F7: tri-state display mode (internal, dual, external) > Fn-F12: suspend-to-disk mode there also seem to be sensitive -letter keys, e.g. etc. does anyone know these? randy To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Sat Mar 10 11: 0:22 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from tabby.kudra.com (gw.kudra.com [199.6.32.20]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3B41237B718 for ; Sat, 10 Mar 2001 11:00:17 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from robert@tabby.kudra.com) Received: (from robert@localhost) by tabby.kudra.com (8.11.1/8.11.1) id f29MdUs48917; Fri, 9 Mar 2001 17:39:30 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from robert) Date: Fri, 9 Mar 2001 17:39:30 -0500 From: Robert Sexton To: Martin Nilsson Cc: Warner Losh , freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: PCI id for O2 Micro Cardbus bridge Message-ID: <20010309173930.A48666@tabby.kudra.com> References: <3AA8C3B4.3D8B6F79@svenskabutiker.se> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.95.6i In-Reply-To: <3AA8C3B4.3D8B6F79@svenskabutiker.se>; from Martin Nilsson on Fri, Mar 09, 2001 at 12:51:16PM +0100 Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Fri, Mar 09, 2001 at 12:51:16PM +0100, Martin Nilsson wrote: > > This patch against current activates the O2Micro 6832 Cardbus controller in my > Siemens M350. Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 13:51:33 -0700 From: Warner Losh Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I just got one of those cool pccard clik! drives. The ones with the drive integrated into the card. Turns out they don't grok the mode sense for page ATAPI_REWRITEABLE_CAP_PAGE, nor the ejection prevention commands (ATAPI_PREVENT_ALLOW). So we fake it. These patches are loosely based on patches that Tetsuo Sakaguchi-san posted in [bsd-nomads:14262] against 2.2.8 + PAO wfd.c. I didn't see anything in the message to indicate if Sakagushi-san is the athor of these patches, or if he was just passing them along. If you commit this, please give credit something like: Submitted by: imp based on earlier patches by Tetsuo Sakaguchi-san In addition, they fix a kernel panic when an atapi driver fails to attach and is later detached. We do this by adding a check to see if adp is non-NULL before using it in atapi_detach(). Maybe a better way would be to clear the present bit in the parent bus, but I'm not sure what the implications of doing that would be. I don't have any atapi fd devices to test these patches with. I'm fairly certain I didn't break anything, but am posting these here in case I did.
