From looking at includes.sgml it looks like something like this has been attempted (see a.latest.ann and a.latest.not entities), but died off (the aforementioned entities still point to 3.4!). Attached is a patch to resurrect this idea. It goes further by making a rel.current entity and defining a.latest.ann, a.latest.not, and a.latest.errata in terms of it. It also changes various files that refer to 4.3 explicitly to use the new entity. I think doing it this way will ease the work for whoever is updating everything when a new release comes out (probably jkh). It's still not as simple as changing the numbers in the entity definition--particularly, releases/index.sgml will still need to be updated manually--but I think it goes a long way. At the very least it will avoid horribly stale links (as I said, a.latest.ann points to 3.4 right now, and it *is* used). Any objections to me committing this some time this week? A couple of comments on the patch; > + > + > + > > -'> > -'> > +'> > +'> > +'> I think we should standardise these across the doc/ and www/ trees. As it stands, I'm not happy with a.latest.not and a.latest.ann, those should be spelled out in full (a.latest.notes, a.latest.announce). There's a "problem" with your entity definitions. You haven't included the ';' at the end of "&base". This won't generate an error, because the SGML parser 'knows' that '/' is not a valid character in an entity name, so it closes it for you, but it's questionable practice, and may confuse people who know less about SGML wondering why we use ';' in some cases and not in others. Best to be completely consistent. Rather than being anchors, perhaps they should just be URLs, so the lines become something like ... Perhaps "u.release." would be a better 'root' for the entity names? > =20 > Index: index.sgml > =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D > RCS file: /st/src/FreeBSD/www/en/index.sgml,v > retrieving revision 1.110 > diff -u -r1.110 index.sgml > --- index.sgml 2001/04/22 05:22:04 1.110 > +++ index.sgml 2001/04/25 02:45:01 > @@ -131,13 +131,13 @@ > > > > - > + Guide · &a.latest.errata;Errata > + > + > >

Just for kicks, here's what RELNOTESng uses (see attachment), modulo things like a $FreeBSD$ tag and some whitespace fixes. > I think we should standardise these across the doc/ and www/ trees. That sounds pretty reasonable. One thought I have is that RELNOTESng, which will live in src/, may need to be kept separate because it's branched (in the CVS sense) and doc/ and www/ are not. So I'd like to either use differently-named entities or else have the ability to avoid including the file that defines the release-related entities but still include some others (such as the committers, manpages, etc.). Does this sound workable, or is there something I'm missing? I'm keen on implementing this now. Are you the right person to talk to about this? I'll need to obtain a bunch of historical archives to bootstrap the process. In the meantime we have made lots of progress in R/D on the software. We have improved the fuzzy search algorithm now and included exact search. The user can choose. We have also made software to do load balancing and optimise the indexes. Are you guys still interested in having this done? I do understand that you already have a search engine on all the lists. But we can offer a different approach. Specifically dynamic previews that include the portion of the text that best matches the query, this can help a lot of weeding out the good hits. And indeed, the fuzzyness to reduce the chance of false hits, which happens a lot of complex technical areas. Developments that are currently in the pipeline involve a lot of fancy xml stuff that will allow use to build powerful combinations of searching and browsing threaded lists. In any case, I'm at the stage where I want to get this in the air. Please let me know who to talk to next. I've currently updated most of the mailing lists that we currently have links to to use the next search software here: http://www.nexial.com/mailinglists/ PS. Do you guys also release binary-only software on your distributions? We will be releasing a free version of the search software soon. We would be keen on getting it on your standard release cdroms. Cheers, Kim Hendrikse --------------------------------------------------------------- Search Holding BV/Nexial Systems. Based on my abilities as an actual human, I determined that we can work together to build niche traffic for each other's site. (ok, I had a little help from a bot, but I really am the brain's behind this operation... ;-) Our site is project based. Most of our visitors are IT professionals who a: work on the road and travel (a lot) b: use tons of web-based subcontractors and knowledge resources c: continously train and reinvent themselves d: like to have fun and spend their huge paychecks As an IT project manager, I am interested in partnering and linking with people who share common business interests and strategies. Of course, if we share links, we both get more traffic. We both win. I've added your website's listing to http://www.proactivate.com/links/themeindex.html. **Important: your listing is in the ** Unix Theme **. All we ask you to do to maintain your link's position on our site is this: * go here http://www.proactivate.com/tools/link_to_us.htm and get our linkback info * copy and past our link data onto your site (with or without graphic) * send an email to webmaster@proactivate.com with a link to show us the link you created You set up links all the time for people anyway, right? The whole process will take very little time. Your site's link is already on our site along with a description and key words. If you link back to us, your site appears at the top of the page with a nice star to call attention to it. This is a logical way can get the RIGHT visitors to both of our sites.
