The problem I have now is that the boot script: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/020.jakarta-tomcat3.sh uses tomcat3ctl, which must have it's own mechanism for starting, because it ignores that classpath. (btw although, 020.jakarta-tomcat3.sh does start tomcat up, tomcat3ctl start doesn't. I've purged and reinstalled, but the problem remains). So is there any way I can get that script to respect my classpath? thanks, Jay > On Wed, 26 Jun 2002, Jason End wrote: > > > I'm having a problem with a java web application > that > > needs to connect to an oracle db. And -current need testers. :-) But, there are _issues_ with -current (broken gcc/g++, outstanding libc_r problems, ...). Therefore I think p7 should at least run with -stable, even if it's without HotSpot. At that time I jumped in to -current, and I really had a fine time with it. However, there is this continuous work of keeping up with "what-is-broken-today" and finding workarounds. Recently, e.g., there was some brokenness in fsck(8) and dump(8) which are both pretty vital to mee. So, since you a while ago stated you did your HotSpot work with a patched libc_r in -stable, I last weekend went back to 4.6-RELEASE (with the plan to continue on to -stable). It seems this was really bad timing, as you now prefer -current :-( ...and I have been waiting for HotSpot since sooooooo long. Do you think there will be a HotSpot patchset for -stable at all? Would you suggest that I come back to -current now? I did make a backup of my -current before I switched :-)))) -- Regards, Georg To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed Jul 10 16:25:20 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0A37637B400 for ; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 16:25:19 -0700 (PDT) Received: from gnuppy.monkey.org (wsip68-15-8-100.sd.sd.cox.net [68.15.8.100]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B092E43E3B for ; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 16:25:18 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from billh@gnuppy.monkey.org) Received: from billh by gnuppy.monkey.org with local (Exim 3.35 #1 (Debian)) id 17SQph-0000j5-00; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 16:25:17 -0700 Date: Wed, 10 Jul 2002 16:25:17 -0700 To: "Georg-W. It's better all around to use -current or -current's libc_r for this purpose instead of the -stable's libc_r. Somebody will have to backport it to -stable like I said before. I'm about to remove all of that stuff (-stable support) in the CVSs, so Greg's patch might be dated when it comes out. I think it should be released regardless, so that folks have an oppurtunity to play with it and then release something specifically for -current next. I've been using -current pretty heavily and it's definitely stable enough to use everyday. There's build issues, but I've been able to get around all of them so far without too much effort. Who knows, somebody could commit something that'll complete break the system tomorrow. That why I kept the old pre-KSE kernel during the recent roughness with that commit. You just have to update the machine intelligently. "How it's running" 1) The Java2Demo is running rather slow and it has me worried. 2) The SIGUSR1 delivery problem is gone now when I run under -current. 3) The only thing that's left is testing out the signal/exception framework (stack yellow/red zoning). There's another subtle bug in -stable that isn't worth it for me to track it down, which just gives me more reason to abandon -stable since it won't run correctly on it anyways even with my hacks. It directly includes a private pthreads header... I'd like to keep things clean by removing a lot of the sloppiness in the current tree. What I commited was a snapshot of my development tree and was in no way designed for general consumption and I don't expect folks to clean up after me. If there's a compelling reason for me to keep -stable, then I'm open to suggestions such as large body of folks that can only run -stable because they have only 1 machine, etc... bill To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed Jul 10 17:17:35 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6139837B400 for ; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 17:17:33 -0700 (PDT) Received: from carme.recalldesign.com (carme.recalldesign.com [203.15.93.5]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A1BEE43E31 for ; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 17:17:29 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mike@vee.net) Received: from io.internal.recalldesign.com (mail.internal.recalldesign.com [203.15.93.150]) by carme.recalldesign.com (8.12.5/8.12.5) with ESMTP id g6B0HRAw043540; Thu, 11 Jul 2002 09:47:28 +0930 (CST) (envelope-from mike@vee.net) Received: from vee.net (polarlander.internal.recalldesign.com [203.15.93.252]) by io.internal.recalldesign.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id g6B0HRD58887; Thu, 11 Jul 2002 09:47:27 +0930 (CST) (envelope-from mike@vee.net) Message-ID: <3D2CCE97.4080801@vee.net> Date: Thu, 11 Jul 2002 09:47:27 +0930 From: Michael Gratton User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.1a+) Gecko/20020707 X-Accept-Language: en-au, en-gb, en, ja MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Bill Huey Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: 1.3.1 patchset 7 not quite ready References: <59063B5B4D98D311BC0D0001FA7E452205FDA83A@l04.research.kpn.com> <20020710102904.GA3882@gnuppy.monkey.org> <1026297898.85611.13.camel@leeloo.intern.geht.de> <20020710110505.GA4071@gnuppy.monkey.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org [resending to the list after forgetting to CC it in the original msg] Hi there, I'd like to say thanks for working on this. I'd like to see it running on -stable if only so I can at least attempt to use it in a production environment sometime in the not too distant future. 5.0-RELEASE is going to be at least four months away, and the paranoid admin in me means I'm not going to be very inclined to move my servers from 4.x to 5.x until at least a few point releases after 5.0 comes out. So, realistically, if HotSpot does not run on 4.x, I'm looking at 8 to 12 months until I can use HotSpot on FreeBSD in a stable server environment. This, of course, sucks.. The answer to that is ultimately backporting libc_r (haven't I said this before ? ;) ). It's not even close being production ready, so getting to run on a -stable machine isn't really that important since it's only good for experimentation and development at this time. bill To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed Jul 10 17:44: 7 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F24DE37B400 for ; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 17:44:01 -0700 (PDT) Received: from carme.recalldesign.com (carme.recalldesign.com [203.15.93.5]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 038B143E4A for ; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 17:44:01 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mike@vee.net) Received: from io.internal.recalldesign.com (mail.internal.recalldesign.com [203.15.93.150]) by carme.recalldesign.com (8.12.5/8.12.5) with ESMTP id g6B0i0Aw043696; Thu, 11 Jul 2002 10:14:00 +0930 (CST) (envelope-from mike@vee.net) Received: from vee.net (polarlander.internal.recalldesign.com [203.15.93.252]) by io.internal.recalldesign.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id g6B0hxD59141; Thu, 11 Jul 2002 10:14:00 +0930 (CST) (envelope-from mike@vee.net) Message-ID: <3D2CD4CF.6000402@vee.net> Date: Thu, 11 Jul 2002 10:13:59 +0930 From: Michael Gratton User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.1a+) Gecko/20020707 X-Accept-Language: en-au, en-gb, en, ja MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Bill Huey Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: 1.3.1 patchset 7 not quite ready References: <59063B5B4D98D311BC0D0001FA7E452205FDA83A@l04.research.kpn.com> <20020710102904.GA3882@gnuppy.monkey.org> <1026297898.85611.13.camel@leeloo.intern.geht.de> <20020710110505.GA4071@gnuppy.monkey.org> <3D2CCE97.4080801@vee.net> <20020711003358.GA3582@gnuppy.monkey.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Bill Huey wrote: > > The answer to that is ultimately backporting libc_r (haven't I said this > before ? ;) ). That's pretty much what I figured. 8-12 months *is* a long time, but a lot of stuff could happen between then and now.. the JDK passes every JCK(?) test, HotSpot starts working, libc_r gets backported, Sun assigns a few enginneers to give you guys a hand.. Ok, you can run whatever you like, but don't expect anyone to be able to help you. (The latter was sarcasm, since at the moment you're the only one doing any HotSpot development.) By jumping to -current, you severely limit both the developers *AND* testers for the code, so you'll continue to be the one-man show. If that's what you want, then you'll get your wish. If, however you want others to jump in and help you (as well as use the fruits of your labors), then we need to keep -stable a supported platform, even if it's non-optimal. > Right now they are different and it serves me best to continue with > what I'm current doing otherwise I won't be able to make any more > forward progress with this project. Does Dan know exactly what parts of libc_r need to be merged back in? Can you help him out there, so that the changes are made back to -stable, so that other developers (and users) can get a chance at HotSpot? That would be a temporary setback for you as far as bit-twiddling and such, but it would bring the project and other developers much further ahead. Nate !! take a pill dude !! I know what I'm doing. The answer to all of this is backporting libc_r to -stable. > Define progress? Getting stuff working under -stable is progress, and > ripping the code out is certainly not progress. Progress is what I deem to be important at this time. By moving to -current I got around a problem with userspace signals automatically that was previously effecting the port. That's a good thing, otherwise I'd still be screwing with stuff that is already fixed in -current. Next on the list is red/yellow zoning if I choose to do that. My intentions here are to move into straight kernel programming after this project, but I definitely intend to get this project working pretty well before I focus on other things. I'm not exactly abandoning it as you might think or what was implied in previous emailings, so the concerns aren't completely fatalistic. What you've said is valid except that the solution is a backport of libc_r. > Fair enough. Does Dan know exactly what parts of libc_r need to be > merged back in? Dan shouldn't be doing that stuff either, he's got other crazy stuff to worry about. I was hoping that somebody else in this project would take that task on. [setbacks] Well, not really. It's *so* pre-alpha at this time that nobody but the most adventurous can help anyways. Even then you pretty much have to be pthreads expert (+ OOP language runtimes) to fix any of the serious problems. The HotSpot sources are completely mind boggling BTW. For those folks that are willing/capable to work on this, porting libc_r and/or running -current isn't going to be a serious problem or blockage for them, however that does cut out the general bug hunting community. That's a legitmate consideration later on in the project, but not now. Give me a couple of weeks to mesh out a couple of things. I know folks are eager to get at it under -stable, but the key component here is getting libc_r backported. I'm not sure what else here to say. bill To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed Jul 10 21:49:15 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 529DF37B407 for ; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 21:49:11 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ns.yogotech.com (ns.yogotech.com [206.127.123.66]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A051143E42 for ; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 21:49:10 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from nate@yogotech.com) Received: from emerger.yogotech.com (emerger.yogotech.com [206.127.123.131]) by ns.yogotech.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id WAA29358; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 22:49:09 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from nate@yogotech.com) Received: (from nate@localhost) by emerger.yogotech.com (8.12.5/8.12.3) id g6B4n8a6015265; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 22:49:08 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from nate) From: Nate Williams MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-ID: <15661.3652.734594.522357@emerger.yogotech.com> Date: Wed, 10 Jul 2002 22:49:08 -0600 To: Bill Huey Cc: Nate Williams , freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: 1.3.1 patchset 7 not quite ready In-Reply-To: <20020711044606.GA4375@gnuppy.monkey.org> References: <20020710234814.GE2394@gnuppy.monkey.org> <15660.64672.311655.234760@emerger.yogotech.com> <20020711035137.GA4210@gnuppy.monkey.org> <15661.575.854309.132871@emerger.yogotech.com> <20020711044606.GA4375@gnuppy.monkey.org> X-Mailer: VM 7.07 under 21.1 (patch 14) "Cuyahoga Valley" XEmacs Lucid Reply-To: nate@yogotech.com (Nate Williams) Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > > Signals 'mostly work' in -current, regardless of what they do in > > HotSpot. If you want the changes backported, then Dan is the man to do it. If you want it done sooner, let him know what needs to be done, (providing patches, pointers, etc..) Otherwise, it won't get done. Right, but the commit of the backported changes needs either Dan's review and (more likely) he'll do the commit himself. Dude, you need to chill out and back off. This port just got working two night ago and I haven't had the chance to even scatch my ass since then, so I don't really know what I'm going to immediately do and in the future (but I have a plan). If -current doesn't work out, then I'll think of another means to forward this project. I'm not rigid and I've done well for this project. I'm adaptive like any reasonable human being. So why not just assume that I'm reasonable because of my project history and then bring up comments about it in a neutral way without forcing me into anything ? Is that too much to ask ? bill To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed Jul 10 23:37:15 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B7B7337B400 for ; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 23:37:13 -0700 (PDT) Received: from electricrain.com (electricrain.com [64.71.143.226]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1957943E3B for ; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 23:37:13 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from fuzzy@electricrain.com) Received: (qmail 26961 invoked by uid 540); 11 Jul 2002 06:37:12 -0000 Date: Wed, 10 Jul 2002 23:37:12 -0700 From: Chris Doherty To: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: FreeBSD OS version for HotSpot (was: 1.3.1 patchset 7 not quite ready) Message-ID: <20020711063712.GA25286@zot.electricrain.com> Reply-To: chris-freebsd@randomcamel.net References: <59063B5B4D98D311BC0D0001FA7E452205FDA83A@l04.research.kpn.com> <20020710102904.GA3882@gnuppy.monkey.org> <1026333648.676.22.camel@hunter.muc.macsch.com> <20020710232517.GB2394@gnuppy.monkey.org> <15660.50045.80305.351508@emerger.yogotech.com> <20020710234416.GD2394@gnuppy.monkey.org> <15660.50999.28887.442198@emerger.yogotech.com> <20020710235822.GA3402@gnuppy.monkey.org> <15660.64492.476148.832286@emerger.yogotech.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <15660.64492.476148.832286@emerger.yogotech.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4i X-Operating-System: XEmacs X-Koan: mu. IMHO is targeting -current The Right Thing (tm). 5.0-RELEASE is not _so_ far away and it would be nice if it would come with a native (Sun approved) binary on the CD. IMHO it would be good for the image of FreeBSD. Some users were disappointed that it didn't come with the latest 4.x-RELEASEs. I don't say -stable should be abandoned, but 5.0-RELEASE should (IMHO) be the primary target. The working premise here is that -current is my prefered platform of choice for pure HotSpot development. If that fails to serve my purposes then I'll think about moving to -stable. BTW, I was multiplying the os::sleep() values by 1000x, which made the Java2D demo slow. ;) I fixed that and it runs more reasonably now with only a 3.8x slow down from the native Linux JVM on my Debian box. That's probably because I'm running a debug version of HotSpot. I expect it to be faster (I got a glimpse of it) with the production version. The signs are definitely encouraging. I need to quit this project and move onto something that's more mainstream for my career, so I might drop it anyways. I'm getting low on cash here. :\ I'll keep you folks informed. bill To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Thu Jul 11 5: 8:59 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B77DC37B400 for ; Thu, 11 Jul 2002 05:08:57 -0700 (PDT) Received: from www.contentmedia.de (www.contentmedia.de [213.61.138.91]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 750B043E09 for ; Thu, 11 Jul 2002 05:08:56 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from marc@informatik.uni-bremen.de) Received: (qmail 22918 invoked from network); 11 Jul 2002 12:07:23 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO leeloo.intern.geht.de) (217.227.201.129) by www.contentmedia.de with SMTP; 11 Jul 2002 12:07:23 -0000 Subject: Re: 1.3.1 patchset 7 not quite ready From: Marc Recht To: Bill Huey Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG In-Reply-To: <20020711111817.GA8289@gnuppy.monkey.org> References: <20020710234814.GE2394@gnuppy.monkey.org> <15660.64672.311655.234760@emerger.yogotech.com> <1026385676.781.30.camel@leeloo.intern.geht.de> <20020711111817.GA8289@gnuppy.monkey.org> Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: Ximian Evolution 1.0.8 Date: 11 Jul 2002 14:08:52 +0200 Message-Id: <1026389333.781.49.camel@leeloo.intern.geht.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > I see both sides to this issue. But I don't think that C(++), OS Development, JIT and OOP does look all too bad on a resume. And Java is also really demanded nowadays. Ever thought of knocking on Sun's door ? Right now support for hotspot under the Linux emulation is broken because of the complicated stuff that sun uses to make their hotspot compiler running. This has been so ever since 1.3 came out, which is about two years ago now. So if you (or someone else) would make it work for now, it would propably still be an ongoing effort with every new release of the jdk for linux. Or at least that's what I'm afraid of. I also don't think there is an active maintainer of the emulator right now. Having a native binary, and the sources, being able to debug the problems, instead of reverse engineering the linux emulator with truss is definitely an advantage. Besides, wouldn't we be able to effectively use the (superior, at least one day :) when 5.0 comes out), threading system of FreeBSD with the native binary, to get superior performance ... :-) Marc. -- ---------------------------------------------------- Marc van Kempen tel. +31 40 2 64 98 60 BowTie Technology fax. +31 40 2 64 98 61 Raiffeisenstraat 7 mailto:marc@bowtie.nl 5611 CH Eindhoven http://www.bowtie.nl ---------------------------------------------------- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Thu Jul 11 8:38:54 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9DFBF37B400 for ; Thu, 11 Jul 2002 08:38:52 -0700 (PDT) Received: from www.contentmedia.de (www.contentmedia.de [213.61.138.91]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 6B3A443E31 for ; Thu, 11 Jul 2002 08:38:51 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from marc@informatik.uni-bremen.de) Received: (qmail 25565 invoked from network); 11 Jul 2002 15:37:18 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO leeloo.intern.geht.de) (217.227.201.129) by www.contentmedia.de with SMTP; 11 Jul 2002 15:37:18 -0000 Subject: Linux JDK 1.4 broken (was: 1.3.1 patchset 7 not quite ready) From: Marc Recht To: "Dougan, Kevin" Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG In-Reply-To: <34BB85C57A05D611B3CF0008C7F35F376E1D94@toxmail1.cyberplex.com> References: <34BB85C57A05D611B3CF0008C7F35F376E1D94@toxmail1.cyberplex.com> Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: Ximian Evolution 1.0.8 Date: 11 Jul 2002 17:38:48 +0200 Message-Id: <1026401929.781.102.camel@leeloo.intern.geht.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > I'm new to FreeBSD although not new to Java or development in general. Not hard at all. The perms in sched_getscheduler in -stable are silly. (also sched_getparam). The production/non-debug builds were crashing last night, but I reduced the optimization level to -O0 and progressively got it to run more reliably. At -O0 the HotSpot production version runs reliably for the Java2D demo. I'm turning off specific optimization options incrementally as I increase the global level of optimization to find what's blowing things up. With the no optimizations at -O0, I get within 50 percent of the native Linux JDK in speed running Java2D. Oh sure, having the native HotSpot is much prefereable to having Linux HotSpot -- *BUT* keep in mind that Linux HotSpot is maintained by SUN, and therefore is available WAY EARLIER with every JDK release. I think that now that green threads are gone from JDK 1.4+, it is even more important that we are able to run the Linux HotSpot. Otherwise we would always have this one-year (or so) gap between the Linux release date of a new JDK and the FreeBSD availability date. I'm not saying that the FreeBSD porting is too slow when it takes one year, this time lag is the sum of several factors. However fast we are in porting, we will have to wait for SUNs source release of a new JDK, and that's usually quite a bit after the first binary releases, or isn't it? -- Regards, Georg. So sure, you're right, and I would be very happy to be able to use the Linux hotspot stuff right now. But shouldn't we be able to get 1.4.x (and hopefully 1.5.x and further) ported much faster, once the really hard stuff (hotspot, initial 1.3.x port) is done? Or do you expect significant internal development to the jvm? Just let somebody else figure that out, it draws too much attention and energy away from HotSpot development. If libc_r gets backported then it should be a relatively small effort to make HotSpot available on -stable. Question is: Is there any chance that libc_r get backported to -stable? There was many problems. the two more important are: 1) OpenBSD/NetBSD and Linux uses a different value for AF_INET6, and, the emulation layer was not doing the syscall translation. FreeBSD may have the same problem. From a NetBSD PR from itojun: sys/compat/linux/linux_socket.c does not try to rewrite sa_family in sockaddr args to various syscalls that take sockaddr (connect, bind, sendto...). therefore, when LINUX_AF_xx differs from AF_xx, linux emulation won't work. {LINUX_,}AF_INET6 is an example. 2) JDK 1.4.0 on Linux try to read a file in /proc/sys/net/interface or something like that (use truss, I don't remember) to decide if there are IPv6-enabled interfaces on the host, and to decide whether or not enabling IPv6 support. This is easy to cheat-around: just copy this proc file from a linux system and put it under /emul/linux/proc... Cedric Shannon -jj Behrens wrote: >Has anyone gotten IPv6 working in Java on FreeBSD?
