It runs fine with FreeBSD 4.9 and I was thinking about getting another gigabit ethernet adapter to conenct the PWS to my gigabit LAN. I'd like to replace it with a quieter power supply. I remember that there is somethign differrent about the pwer supply that is needed for the Alpha. Does anyone know where i can buy a power supply that will work with the alpha 164LX and might be less loud than the original power supply? Thanks for any info. I own an AlphaPC 164LX too, and I can tell you from my own experience that a normal ATX Power supply will work... ("AlphaPC 164LX" is just a board (and nothing more) made by Samsung. Usually these are 12Vdc. fans, however, it could be Vac. depending upon its country of origin. The fan should be labeled to indicate this. I would opt for an "NMB" true ball bering fan as I've had these going continuously for like 5 yrs. in a PC. You can find them at electronics catalog houses (i.e. Newark) or bastardize one from a good quality a PC PSU/case. Make sure that the replacement component has the same Voltage and Current ratings. If you you match the specifications for the original fan, you will likely end up with a fan that has the same output and thus the same ability to cool the PSU. The operation is simple, just make certain to observe the correct polarity, use butt crimp connectors to avoid having to solder to the PSU board. Also, make certain that the fan is oriented to blow in the same direction that the original one did. Before cracking open your PSU make sure to unplug it for a few hours. This will ensure that any residual charge has dissapated from various capacitors. So, you make the call. I've been running one of these "NMB" fans in a Pentium 120 since 1998. No problems and whisper quiet, with nothing more than an occasional cleaning. > > Hi, > > My Alpha has a power supply with a very loud fan. I'd like to replace it > with a quieter power supply. I have a PC164LX in an Antec KS280B mid-tower I picked up from Antec for a song. It has a 300w power supply, which has been more than adequate to power the Alpha, a full 1G RAM, two 10,000RPM SCSI drives, a Symbios SYM22902 SCSI card, an ATI Radeon 9100 128M, an ISA SB ViBRA16 and a CD-ROM drive. In short, any ATX power supply 300w and above worth two shakes should work fine. If I understood this correct the cause can be almost everything :( I can't speak for this problem yet, because my test systems are a bit older, but speaking for the pipe corruption: I did a lots of bzip1, tar, scp, nfs(client) without noticing any sign of problem. What is so special with the port cluster? I have no clue about it's design. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de ticso@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 4 06:35:31 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9DD7316A4CE for ; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 06:35:31 -0800 (PST) Received: from duke.cs.duke.edu (duke.cs.duke.edu [152.3.140.1]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 120E943FDD for ; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 06:35:28 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gallatin@cs.duke.edu) Received: from grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (grasshopper.cs.duke.edu [152.3.145.30]) by duke.cs.duke.edu (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id hA4EZRn6001982 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA bits=168 verify=NO); Tue, 4 Nov 2003 09:35:27 -0500 (EST) Received: (from gallatin@localhost) by grasshopper.cs.duke.edu (8.11.6/8.9.1) id hA4EZMn76556; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 09:35:22 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from gallatin@cs.duke.edu) From: Andrew Gallatin MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-ID: <16295.47401.948500.681512@grasshopper.cs.duke.edu> Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 09:35:21 -0500 (EST) To: Kris Kennaway In-Reply-To: <20031101103955.GA42891@rot13.obsecurity.org> References: <20031101103955.GA42891@rot13.obsecurity.org> X-Mailer: VM 6.75 under 21.1 (patch 12) "Channel Islands" XEmacs Lucid cc: alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Re: New alpha 5.x bug X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 04 Nov 2003 14:35:31 -0000 Kris Kennaway writes: > On a whim, I updated one of the alpha package machines to -current. > It lasted a few hours under load before going into an infinite loop > displaying the following on the console: > > prologue botch: displacement 32 > frame size botch: adjust register offsets? > frame size botch: adjust register offsets? > prologue botch: displacement 32 > frame size botch: adjust register offsets? > frame size botch: adjust register offsets? > prologue botch: displacement 32 Its coming from the ddb stack trace code. I imagine that you're probably panic'ing with a trashed stack, and ddb is horribly confused. Try disabling ddb traces on panic and LORs and see if you can get a real panic message (or log the console output to a file if its via a serial console). I moved in fd_probe() if (fd->type == FDT_NONE && (fd->fdu == 0 || fd->fdu == 1)) { out of the #if defined(__i386__) || defined(__amd64__) block and created an #else section (like it was in RELENG_4) where the fd->type is set to 144 by force. Why not just re-create the #else block? Why moving the if statement out of the #ifdef block? Doing it that way, it's still possible to set hint.fd.0.flags for example to 3 (720KB Floppy), and only set the 1.44M type as a fallback when flags is NULL (FDT_NONE) which means in that case, hint.fd.0.flags isn't defined. (Because we don't query the "BIOS" as we do it for x86 to get the info what kind of floppy is attached to fdc.) Any special NFS options? tcp, udp, v2, v3, IPv4, IPv6? Just to get the picture complete. The build is local and the package is then copied to a NFS server on which t has a corrupted CRC? Is the bzip2 CRC wrong, or the tar CRC (does tar have a CRC?), or both? Can you say how likely such a corruption is? Are other packages compiled during copying a package file to the server? Are the building machines memory stressed while creating the bz file or while copying it? Really - it's hard to believe that pipe itself is the problem. I do lots of buildworlds with CFLAGS=-pipe and a corruption would very likely stop building. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de ticso@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 4 14:18:32 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 11F0516A4CE for ; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 14:18:32 -0800 (PST) Received: from smtpzilla3.xs4all.nl (smtpzilla3.xs4all.nl [194.109.127.139]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4A79443FE5 for ; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 14:18:30 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from wkb@freebie.xs4all.nl) Received: from freebie.xs4all.nl (freebie.xs4all.nl [213.84.32.253]) by smtpzilla3.xs4all.nl (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id hA4MIQhG048219; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 23:18:27 +0100 (CET) Received: from freebie.xs4all.nl (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freebie.xs4all.nl (8.12.9p2/8.12.9) with ESMTP id hA4MIQ0P015304; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 23:18:26 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from wkb@freebie.xs4all.nl) Received: (from wkb@localhost) by freebie.xs4all.nl (8.12.9p2/8.12.9/Submit) id hA4MIQUk015303; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 23:18:26 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from wkb) Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 23:18:26 +0100 From: Wilko Bulte To: ticso@cicely.de Message-ID: <20031104221826.GC15210@freebie.xs4all.nl> References: <20031101103955.GA42891@rot13.obsecurity.org> <20031104031740.GA67484@rot13.obsecurity.org> <20031104124826.GH42463@cicely12.cicely.de> <20031104175552.GA70699@rot13.obsecurity.org> <20031104221251.GJ42463@cicely12.cicely.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20031104221251.GJ42463@cicely12.cicely.de> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i X-OS: FreeBSD 4.9-STABLE X-PGP: finger wilko@freebsd.org cc: alpha@freebsd.org cc: Kris Kennaway Subject: Re: New alpha 5.x bug X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 04 Nov 2003 22:18:32 -0000 On Tue, Nov 04, 2003 at 11:12:51PM +0100, Bernd Walter wrote: > On Tue, Nov 04, 2003 at 09:55:52AM -0800, Kris Kennaway wrote: > > On Tue, Nov 04, 2003 at 01:48:27PM +0100, Bernd Walter wrote: > > > I can't speak for this problem yet, because my test systems are a bit > > > older, but speaking for the pipe corruption: > > > I did a lots of bzip1, tar, scp, nfs(client) without noticing any > > > sign of problem. > > > What is so special with the port cluster? > > > I have no clue about it's design. > > > > It does lots of parallel package builds (untar, pkg_add, compile, tar) and NFS copying. > > Any special NFS options? > tcp, udp, v2, v3, IPv4, IPv6? > > Just to get the picture complete. > The build is local and the package is then copied to a NFS server on > which t has a corrupted CRC? > Is the bzip2 CRC wrong, or the tar CRC (does tar have a CRC?), or both? > Can you say how likely such a corruption is? > Are other packages compiled during copying a package file to the server? > Are the building machines memory stressed while creating the bz file or > while copying it? The machines are definitely busy (building other packages) while the package is created and copied, although the machines should not be paging. > Really - it's hard to believe that pipe itself is the problem. > I do lots of buildworlds with CFLAGS=3D-pipe and a corruption would > very likely stop building. I know that the problem began between 5.1-R and August 6, but I have not been able to track it down beyond this. There was work on both pipes and VM in that time period, which is why I am suspicious of both. If the card does dma, then it will be unlikley to work. I dont know that Gigabit ethernet existed when miatas were new, and hence, DEC wouldn't have validated, or worked around the bug for any (non-)existing cards. It might be that a card was released shortly after that which they got working with a later SRM version or something, but I generally doubt you'll ever get Gigabit ethernet on the miata. This is on one of my NFS servers: [53]cicely9# uptime 11:38PM up 73 days, 2:49, 4 users, load averages: 0.03, 0.02, 0.00 [54]cicely9# uname -a FreeBSD cicely9.cicely.de 5.1-CURRENT FreeBSD 5.1-CURRENT #0: Sat Aug 23 03:25:04 CEST 2003 ticso@cicely9.cicely.de:/var/d2/obj/var/d7/builder/FreeBSD-2003-08-22-cicely9/src/sys/CICELY9 alpha The system is a PC164 with a 3COM 3C905B (xl) card and has a lot of NFS load. Isn't the chipset the same as in miatas? One importent difference is that PC164 systems still run with a hack for blocking interupts, which effectively block more interrupts then actually required and therefor massively reduce IO concurency. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de ticso@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 4 15:18:49 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D281716A4CE for ; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 15:18:49 -0800 (PST) Received: from obsecurity.dyndns.org (adsl-63-207-60-234.dsl.lsan03.pacbell.net [63.207.60.234]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EAD9E43FDD for ; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 15:18:48 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from kris@obsecurity.org) Received: from rot13.obsecurity.org (rot13.obsecurity.org [10.0.0.5]) by obsecurity.dyndns.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 991EC66B9B; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 15:18:48 -0800 (PST) Received: by rot13.obsecurity.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 81EB47A9; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 15:18:48 -0800 (PST) Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 15:18:48 -0800 From: Kris Kennaway To: ticso@cicely.de Message-ID: <20031104231848.GA72581@rot13.obsecurity.org> References: <20031101103955.GA42891@rot13.obsecurity.org> <20031104031740.GA67484@rot13.obsecurity.org> <20031104124826.GH42463@cicely12.cicely.de> <20031104175552.GA70699@rot13.obsecurity.org> <20031104221251.GJ42463@cicely12.cicely.de> <20031104221826.GC15210@freebie.xs4all.nl> <20031104230040.GK42463@cicely12.cicely.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="LZvS9be/3tNcYl/X" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20031104230040.GK42463@cicely12.cicely.de> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i cc: Kris Kennaway cc: alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Re: New alpha 5.x bug X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 04 Nov 2003 23:18:49 -0000 --LZvS9be/3tNcYl/X Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Wed, Nov 05, 2003 at 12:00:40AM +0100, Bernd Walter wrote: > > Hmmm.. the package builders are Miatas right?=20 > >=20 > > Are they using a PCI add-in ethernet card? > >=20 > > I'm thinking of the Miata's rather fragile DMA stuff in the Pyxis > > core logic chip. I don't think the corruption happened during network transit. For example, they're pushed to the server via scp, so data corruption of the ethernet packet would cause it to bounce off scp's integrity protection. Well - this should be handled at TCP level by just dropping the packet and waiting for retransmit without the application ever to know. But if the DMA corrupts unrelated data. However - it sounds unlikey to not corrupt other kind of data as well. The question is what kind of bug this is to only trigger on the port cluster. vm/pipe sounds reasonable to believe for this kind of corruption, but it never happened for me. Possibly I'm not pushing vm that much. I wonder if setting vm.idlezero_enable=0 has an influence - this will not change the danger of this bug, but if it changes sympotoms might give a good indication of the direction to search. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de ticso@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 4 17:34:10 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 384F716A4CE for ; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 17:34:10 -0800 (PST) Received: from obsecurity.dyndns.org (adsl-63-207-60-234.dsl.lsan03.pacbell.net [63.207.60.234]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4ACE243FF7 for ; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 17:34:09 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from kris@obsecurity.org) Received: from rot13.obsecurity.org (rot13.obsecurity.org [10.0.0.5]) by obsecurity.dyndns.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9A25D66B9B; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 17:34:08 -0800 (PST) Received: by rot13.obsecurity.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 8F40ADAF; Tue, 4 Nov 2003 17:34:08 -0800 (PST) Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 17:34:08 -0800 From: Kris Kennaway To: ticso@cicely.de Message-ID: <20031105013408.GA72898@rot13.obsecurity.org> References: <20031101103955.GA42891@rot13.obsecurity.org> <20031104031740.GA67484@rot13.obsecurity.org> <20031104124826.GH42463@cicely12.cicely.de> <20031104175552.GA70699@rot13.obsecurity.org> <20031104221251.GJ42463@cicely12.cicely.de> <20031104221826.GC15210@freebie.xs4all.nl> <20031104230040.GK42463@cicely12.cicely.de> <20031104231848.GA72581@rot13.obsecurity.org> <20031104233146.GL42463@cicely12.cicely.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="yrj/dFKFPuw6o+aM" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20031104233146.GL42463@cicely12.cicely.de> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i cc: alpha@freebsd.org cc: Kris Kennaway Subject: Re: New alpha 5.x bug X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 05 Nov 2003 01:34:10 -0000 --yrj/dFKFPuw6o+aM Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline On Wed, Nov 05, 2003 at 12:31:47AM +0100, Bernd Walter wrote: > The question is what kind of bug this is to only trigger on the port > cluster. Sure a nasty one.. I know David is working to get some DS10s in to the ports cluster, it would be highly interesting to see if they exhibit the same behaviour. Autonegotiate problems with a brain dead unmanaged switch have been solved with lan_config. Diagnosis: works perfectly in a 64bit slot. pci_device_override is set to -1 and pci_parity is 1. The DMA bug occurs when crossing a page (8K) boundary using scatter/gather DMA READs. FreeBSD doesn't even use scatter/gather for anything but ISA cards at the moment. Most GigE cards are not ISA ;) For what its worth, we used Alteon Tigon II Gigabit nics on our Miatas back when the hardware was current and 4.0 was -CURRENT. Even if it works, don't expect great performance. As best as I can remember, we never managed to get much more than 500Mb/sec throughput, even with jumbo frames. This is partly because the Miata's PCI bus / memory system really sucks by modern standards and it can't get anywhere near the 250MB/sec theoretical PCI max... I personaly have the strong feeling that this is somehow related to the recent propagate_priority problem seen on i386 systems. Both symptoms came up recently and IIRC the i386 thread already brought up a possible stack corruption. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de ticso@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Nov 5 09:23:56 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2970916A4CE for ; Wed, 5 Nov 2003 09:23:56 -0800 (PST) Received: from out7.mx.nwbl.wi.voyager.net (out7.mx.nwbl.wi.voyager.net [169.207.3.125]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C29C0440A0 for ; Wed, 5 Nov 2003 09:22:53 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from robc@execpc.com) Received: from mail0.mx.voyager.net (mail0.mx.voyager.net [216.93.66.205]) by out7.mx.nwbl.wi.voyager.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 39F0E93162 for ; Wed, 5 Nov 2003 11:22:48 -0600 (CST) Received: from localhost.localdomain (nm5.mx.lnng.mi.voyager.net [216.93.38.231]) by mail0.mx.voyager.net (8.12.10/8.10.2) with ESMTP id hA5HMlMI037687 for ; Wed, 5 Nov 2003 12:22:48 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <200311051722.hA5HMlMI037687@mail0.mx.voyager.net> From: "rob copsey" To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailer: CoreCommMail X-IPAddress: 169.207.169.134 Date: Wed, 5 Nov 2003 12:22:47 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Subject: *56 - versions X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 05 Nov 2003 17:23:56 -0000 Hello, I've recently come across a *56 processor that starts with pc rather than ev. My mistake -- my only experience with 64-bit slot incompatabilities is with 32-bit pci video cards, where using the 64-bit slots definitely affect performance (ie occasional machine checks) - at least with 3 different maxtrox cards I tried (Millenium, M-II, and Mystique) That was the evidence I based my statement on, and I realize that it could indeed be 20 other things that cause those cards to fail in the 64-bit slots... Eg, the X server writes to / reads from PCI addresses mapped into its address space. Early alphas (like miatas) are very sensative to loads and stores from PCI addresses which have no physical device backing them. Other platforms, such as x86 PCs and ev6 (and later) alphas are much more forgiving, and return -1 for loads and ignore stores. Early alphas deliver a machine check and crash the machine. I'm not sure how a 64 bit slot could affect this, however its conceivable that there is some bug in how we mmap device memory, and the different addresses that the SRM assigns to the memory regions of the cards when they are in 64-bit slots tickle the bug. The answer is "no, PC56 CPUs won't work in a PWS." The PC56 CPUs were touted as "inexpensive Alphas" and were only used in one motherboard (that I know of), the PC164SX. They were cheaper than EV56 CPUs, but didn't perform as well. I'm just a newbie to Alphas, but already I feel the need to delve into the dusty bowels of my recently salvaged 433au MX5. I know my hardware is antique and I don't expect miracles, I just want to extend my knowlege of the architecture with the hope of being able to apply this knowledge on a larger scale (SMP/PP). I'm lucky that there are history buffs like you around so that I can afford to do this. As for chastising you for being wrong, it would be too trivial.
