I personally think that former MLINKS can be replaced by real device MLINKS. We have many other manpages with similar situation: - the sio(4) manpage documents "device sio" but is not MLINK'ed to "cuaa", "ttyd", etc.; - the psm(4) manpage documents "device psm" but is not MLINK'ed to "bpsm"; - and so on. I mean, it's very good when /dev entries match device driver name, but it's not required and not always possible. The /dev entries should be documented in the FILES section of the manpage. The SYNOPSIS should show the actual device driver names, not the /dev entries. > > Personally, I don't see a problem with having "man 4 ar" give you > > something different on, say, sparc64 and i386; I vaguely remember a > > similar discussion when the second ar driver was added, and the > > conclusion was that this wouldn't be a problem, I believe. >=20 "device ataraid" is MI, according to sys/conf/{NOTES,files}. > Put a note in the description: >=20 > If you are looking for ... please see .Xr blah. >=20 This is pointless: referencing to ar(4) when you're reading ar(4). It's a point which I think needs clarification on the web document I mentioned in another post. When I started this, I actually thought I was writing to someone who had the power to fix the problem. I've rechecked the page and now see I clicked the wrong link. I'm ccing doc in the hope the content of the page will be clarified. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. The non-compliancy in the PR is using trap with two or more actions to reset the signal to default. For example "trap INT TERM" should set the action for SIGTERM to "INT" but instead resets both SIGINT and SIGTERM to default. The results from invoking trap with a single argument (excluding options) are undefined in POSIX. A small comparison with other shells: bash changed that from 2.x to 3.x -- bash2 bahaves as FreeBSD sh here, while bash3 is POSIX-compliant here (but allows resetting a signal to default with a single argument, like "trap USR1"). zsh (4.2.0) and pdksh (5.2.14p2) behave as FreeBSD sh. ksh93 behaves according to POSIX. -- Jilles Tjoelker From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Aug 30 16:22:57 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 153C616A4CE; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 16:22:57 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ns1.tiadon.com (SMTP.tiadon.com [69.27.132.161]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8ECA343D31; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 16:22:56 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kdk@daleco.biz) Received: from [69.27.131.0] ([69.27.131.0]) by ns1.tiadon.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.0); Mon, 30 Aug 2004 11:26:31 -0500 Message-ID: <4133545B.5080704@daleco.biz> Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 11:22:51 -0500 From: "Kevin D. As an example, the following appears on the page that you linked in your recent crosspost to doc@: "Consider what would happen if you had two IDE hard disks, one as the master on the first IDE controller, and one as the master on the second IDE controller. Then again, just above figure 2-16 (which is the same as figure 2-20 but without an "X" in the checkbox): Figure 2-16 shows an example from a system with two IDE disks. They have been called ad0 and ad2. Based on reading these sections/statements of the manual, it would seem somewhat obvious that ad0 is the primary master IDE hard disk. It is hard, then, at least for me, to see this as a fault of the documentation. The information was there; I would grant that the search engine(s) may not have found it for you. I certainly don't represent the FreeBSD organization as a whole --- I'm simply a user, like so many others. I apologize if I seem curt, it is certainly not my intention, and I'm not writing to "flame" or "offend" you or anyone else. Your suggestion "if the panel displayed information such as Brand (&) Capacity" is certainly valid from an end-user standpoint. Some operating systems might well do that; that's a totally different subject, though. And that isn't about the docs, either, it's about the installation program, which is a years-old hydra that no Heracles has yet stepped up to behead.... Kevin Kinsey DaleCo, S.P. That would be my cue. The docs are build on builder.freebsd.org under my user account and then mirrored to ftp-master. The build dir on builder is /local0/docbuild so that's where that comes from. I will have a look at why the packages include this path. Anyway, I personally don't really see the point in the doc packages, so I got the ftp logs from ftp.freebsd.org some time ago to see if they were actually being downloaded, but I got sidetracked by.. well everything else :-). --=20 Simon L. I have booted some other installers on this setup and find they do provide more information than the bare OS-dependant name. Ideally, on my system, the installer would say: AD0 Internal IDE drive, primary master, WD102AA 10.2 Gb DA0 External USB drive, Cypress ATMR04-0 40 Gb so most, even modestly, technical people could instantly recognise which disk is which. I'm afraid I haven't followed the doc@ list since that was a WIBNI instead of a WIP, so I'm not sure of the status of the project. I would like to mention it in the cvs-src summary when it's all through; is there a certain src commit I should be watching for to tip me off when it's done? Alternatively, would it be possible for someone involved to drop me a brief note when a mention would be most appropriate? BTW, I'm not averse to mentioning other significant doc@ commits, although I don't have time to follow the doc cvs. If there are commits or general changes that you'd like to see me note in a summary, please drop me a mail. Please don't go out of your way, though. Much thanks, Mark * Sorry, you've probably heard it a million times. :) From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Aug 31 04:00:42 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0829816A4D5 for ; Tue, 31 Aug 2004 04:00:42 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 10B3143D60 for ; Tue, 31 Aug 2004 04:00:39 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i7V40clO071565 for ; Tue, 31 Aug 2004 04:00:38 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i7V40cAL071558; Tue, 31 Aug 2004 04:00:38 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2004 04:00:38 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200408310400.i7V40cAL071558@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Kevin Kinsey Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C8E7F16A4CE for ; Tue, 31 Aug 2004 03:57:44 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ezekiel.daleco.biz (cdm-66-76-92-18.cart.cox-internet.com [66.76.92.18]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3800D43D1D for ; Tue, 31 Aug 2004 03:57:44 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kadmin@ezekiel.daleco.biz) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by ezekiel.daleco.biz (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i7V3vhCP046323 for ; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 22:57:43 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from kadmin@ezekiel.daleco.biz) Received: from ezekiel.daleco.biz ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (ezekiel.daleco.biz [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 45780-09 for ; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 22:57:40 -0500 (CDT) Received: from ezekiel.daleco.biz (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by ezekiel.daleco.biz (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i7V3vcES046318 for ; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 22:57:38 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from kadmin@ezekiel.daleco.biz) Received: (from kadmin@localhost) by ezekiel.daleco.biz (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id i7V3vccl046317; Mon, 30 Aug 2004 22:57:38 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from kadmin) Message-Id: <200408310357.i7V3vccl046317@ezekiel.daleco.biz> Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 22:57:38 -0500 (CDT) From: Kevin Kinsey To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: 3.113 Subject: docs/71175: (PATCH) Bad link in "explaining BSD" article, (EN) X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: Kevin Kinsey List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2004 04:00:42 -0000 >Number: 71175 >Category: docs >Synopsis: (PATCH) Bad link in "explaining BSD" article, (EN) >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: medium >Responsible: freebsd-doc >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: doc-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Tue Aug 31 04:00:38 GMT 2004 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Kevin Kinsey >Release: FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE-p9 i386 >Organization: DaleCo, S.P. >Environment: System: FreeBSD ezekiel.daleco.biz 5.2.1-RELEASE-p9 FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE-p9 #0: Fri Aug 6 12:44:00 CDT 2004 root@ezekiel.daleco.biz:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386 >Description: I was reading Grog's "Explaining BSD" at the site. Not my intent to join in beating you about the head and shoulders, but what some folks have been trying to say (perhaps tersely, granted) is that you're writing to people who (1) all have lots of things to do in the Real World(tm), (2) have far less idea of how you think the documentation should read than you do, and (3) if they share your ideas about what the installer should show, which is not certain, haven't had time to do anything about it. Particularly regarding the installer, it would appear that the change you want is either not trivial, not a priority, or both. Here's how you ought to proceed: Regarding the documentation, read the Handbook and any other sources you can find regarding submitting a "patch" (a requested change) to the docs, do so, and see if someone with authority to make ("commit") the change agrees with you. Regarding the installer, see if you can find someone (reading the freebsd-hackers mailing list might be a place to start) interested in and capable of making the types of changes you envision, who has time to spend on the project. Otherwise, things will remain as they are (actually not horrible from my point of view - absolutely there is a learning curve, but I strangely enjoy that sort of thing), since, as others have pointed out, you're dealing with volunteers. "make clean" doesn't work right for HTML output because I don't see how to generate a manifest of the chunked files created by the XSLT stylesheets. Please let me know if you have experience with the DocBook slides DTD. doc.slides.mk could be extended in many ways to control what type of HTML or PDF is created. This DTD offers the vocabulary of simplified DocBook for presentations. Initially, the supported output formats are PDF and HTML. XSL stylesheets are used so libxslt is required. PassiveTeX is used for the PDF generation to convert the XSL-FO directly to PDF. This commit moves various TeX definitions out of doc.docbook.mk and into doc.project.mk, since docbook is no longer the only back-end to utilize TeX. An example Makefile would look like : ---- DOCFORMAT= slides DOC= slides SRCS= slides.xml DOC_PREFIX?= ${.CURDIR}/../../.. .include "${DOC_PREFIX}/share/mk/doc.project.mk" --- And an example slides file (slides.xml) looks like : --- What's new in FreeBSD 5.3 FreeBSD 5.3 Introduction Slide Content --- You could then build the HTML and PDF versions of the slides by typing "make FORMATS='pdf html'". Just off the top of your head, > do you have any idea what I did wrong? The doc build system supports many different types of output (HTML, HTML split/paginated, PS,PDF...). It takes quite long to build all types, so by default most articles only create HTML (single page) output. You have override it by settting the FORMATS variable for make. E.g.: make all FORMATS=3D"html html-split" to create both the single file HTML version and the split/paginated. --=20 Simon L. Before I make extensive changes to the bibliography chapter of the Handbook, I think that a call for translator feedback is necessary. One of the resulting formats that I've considered for this file is: Books and magazines English Books & Magazines ... Chinese Books & Magazines ... Japanese Books & Magazines ... The diff from the current version is going to be large if I make it look this way though. Essentially, it's going to be a rewrite of the chapter. My opinion is that this will look a bit better than what we have now, which looks like this: Books and Magazines International Books & Magazines ... Chinese Books & Magazines ... Japanese Books & Magazines ... English Language Books & Magazines ... The separation of international vs. language categories and English entries is not very clear and some entries are in seemingly random places[1]: [1] Take a look at this this entry, for instance: FreeBSD Install and Utilization Manual (in Japanese), published by Mainichi Communications Inc.. which is clearly a Japanese book, but is currently far apart from the rest of the Japanese books, between German books and an Indonesian book. Is a rewrite of this chapter too disruptive a change to make close to a release like we're now for the translation teams?
