That problem seems to be because of the acpi. When booting the system in 5.x appears a menu with differents kind of bootstraps (a menu with a daemon), and there is option that lets you to boot without the ACPI layer, try it. With the description of your error, i would advice you to investigate the ACPI. There is some useful information about it in the systems docs (/usr/share/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/laptop) and in the mailing lists. I burned 5.3 to a CD and boot loader reports multiple UDMA warnings and errors on startup. I tried disabling ACPI and still got the same warnings. I know my hard drive works fine under 4.10. Bottom line I can't repartion or write to disk while installing 5.3. If I am correct, why does the kernel refuse to schedule on a return_from_interrupt if its not going back to userland? I can understand this being a problem if interrupts were nested, or return from a page fault in a critical section. Please correct me if I am wrong, but if a *high* priority interrupt thread is ready to run, it should be given a chance. Presuming the *interrupted* kernel path is going to give up the CPU fast enough is probably not a good idea. I hope I have sent this to the right mailing list. I have been using 5.3 on a spare system I have around to get the feel for it, and I was going to set up a dual boot on my main system, but when I go through the install, and get to the NIC config, my card will never get an ip from DHCP, nor will it work when I give it a static ip. This is an AMD 64 board, but I'm installing 32 bit OS, to avoid the lack of ported software. The NIC is Syskonnect onboard gigabit, and is found at boot as sk0. Is this a known issue with this card/motherboard? Or do I need to send some diag info? If so, this happens before the extra ttys are started, so where do I get it. That is interesting. I didn't see that the OWEPREEMPT flag is deliberately cleared. Do you why that is done? I dont see why a handler will explicitly call maybe_preempt, but it could try to add some thread to the runqueue. There're web mirrors of this list that will get scanned by spam robots. Also realize that probably some users read this list from a unpatched and infected windows machine, so even if it's a privated list there're chances that you'll get viruses. So yes...it's probable that you'll get spam by posting here - or in any public mailing list anyway.
