That is putting music CD to HD for encoding ogg/flac/mp3 etc. cdparanoia/cdda2wav/dagrab or "dd"ing /dev/acd0tX? should I be using the native atapi code for my ide-CD-drive or is the atapicam module recommended? [I must say that I have had trouble finding much on atapicam. e.g. why/when it should be used, advantages over normal atapi, performance considerations, is it better for burning, etc.] 2) I'm having some weird behavior with cdparanoia. I have a dvd-rom and a cd-burner both lite-on that have worked flawlessly under Linux & windows. The behavior outlined below is the same for both drives. here's the deal. with atapicam in the kernel cdparanoia works perfectly. without atapicam [using normal ide code, acd0] it's a different story. it complains about sensing endianness, messes up the running kernel, and never finishes. But when I give cdparanoia either the -c or -C flags [force little & big endianness respectively] it works fine. It doesn't matter whether I use -c or -C and I actually have no idea what endianness my drives have. so... PROBLEM ======== cdparanoia -vsQ cdparanoia -B NO PROBLEM =========== cdparanoia -cvsQ cdparanoia -CvsQ cdparanoia -cB 7 cdparanoia -CB 7 Thank you, Lex. PS - I'd really appreciate a personal CC for this as I'm not on any lists yet but I'll check out the web archive also. Using xawtv I can get the picture on channel 68 (which is where it should be) but the audio requires a fine tune to +26 (or +41) by which time the picture has gone blue, I can get similar effects in mplayer, fxtv and ffmpeg. I have tried fiddling with the tuner sysctl and the channel set but nothing changes. My guess is that the audio carrier is at an unexpected offset from the video, but I can't see where to hack to adjust it. Searching the archives revealed quite a number of posts from people with video and no audio or poor audio but no resolution of their problems, perhaps there is a clue here. -- C:>WIN | Directable Mirrors The computer obeys and wins. |A Better Way To Focus The Sun You lose and Bill collects. | licenses available - see: | http://www.sohara.org/ From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Sat May 8 14:46:06 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 64A6216A4CE for ; Sat, 8 May 2004 14:46:06 -0700 (PDT) Received: from lakermmtao03.cox.net (lakermmtao03.cox.net [68.230.240.36]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CA06E43D53 for ; Sat, 8 May 2004 14:46:05 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from conrads@cox.net) Received: from ip68-14-60-78.no.no.cox.net ([68.14.60.78]) by lakermmtao03.cox.netESMTP <20040508214604.CACO22312.lakermmtao03.cox.net@ip68-14-60-78.no.no.cox.net> for ; Sat, 8 May 2004 17:46:04 -0400 Received: from ip68-14-60-78.no.no.cox.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) i48LjxTI035197 for ; Sat, 8 May 2004 16:45:59 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from conrads@ip68-14-60-78.no.no.cox.net) Received: (from conrads@localhost)i48LjsZ1035196 for freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org; Sat, 8 May 2004 16:45:54 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from conrads) Message-ID: X-Mailer: XFMail 1.5.5 on FreeBSD X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit MIME-Version: 1.0 Date: Sat, 08 May 2004 16:45:54 -0500 (CDT) From: Conrad Sabatier To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: MIDI using external synth via serial port X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: conrads@cox.net List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 08 May 2004 21:46:06 -0000 I've been wanting to try this, but before I do, I just wanted to check something. To do MIDI using an external synth connected via a serial port, is anything else required in the kernel config besides "device midi" and the hints in /boot/device.hints? Is the sequencer device also required (or even supported)? Also, any recommendations re: a good sequencer app? Have never had a need for anything else since. Just be aware that, for encoding from the resulting raw pcm data to mp3 or whatever other format, you'll need to let the encoder know to reverse the endianness, else all you'll wind up with is static. -- Conrad Sabatier - "In Unix veritas"
