The card used to be identified as: sk0: on skc0 [....] I initially rebooted to add RAM to the machine, but have since tried to take the extra memory back out to no avail :-( Short of a sudden hardware problem, what could be the reason for this? A bad change there could easily results in the problem not showing up until a reboot. --Alex PS I've redirected to hardware, though questions would probably have been best. Cross posting is not encouraged and this does not appear to be a hackers issue (at least not until you've eliminated much likelier errors). This looks like only the second bit of info that is looked at from the eeprom, and the first bit wouldn't give an error if it too was returning 0x0. This is just my quick reading of the code, though! I would definitely be starting to think that adding the memory triggered a hardware problem, perhaps static, or something physical. Presumably you don't have another OS installed on the machine ( Windows or Linux) because if it too couldn't see the ethernet that would be a strong indicator of hardware problems. --Alex From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Nov 4 07:08:39 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E5D4516A41F for ; Fri, 4 Nov 2005 07:08:39 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from r11roadster@yahoo.com) Received: from mxsf04.cluster1.charter.net (mxsf04.cluster1.charter.net [209.225.28.204]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7E80443D46 for ; Fri, 4 Nov 2005 07:08:39 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from r11roadster@yahoo.com) Received: from mxip18a.cluster1.charter.net (mxip18a.cluster1.charter.net [209.225.28.148]) by mxsf04.cluster1.charter.net (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id jA478b9L026396 for ; Fri, 4 Nov 2005 02:08:37 -0500 Received: from 68-119-38-069.dhcp.spbg.sc.charter.com (HELO [192.168.1.67]) (68.119.38.69) by mxip18a.cluster1.charter.net with ESMTP; 04 Nov 2005 02:08:38 -0500 X-IronPort-AV: i="3.97,290,1125892800"; d="scan'208"; a="1750462412:sNHT14672808" Received: from 127.0.0.1 (AVG SMTP 7.1.362 [267.12.7/160]); Fri, 04 Nov 2005 02:08:31 -0500 Message-ID: <436B08EF.1010401@yahoo.com> Date: Fri, 04 Nov 2005 02:08:31 -0500 From: Ronny Hippler User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.6 (Windows/20050716) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: FreeBSD Hardware X-Enigmail-Version: 0.93.0.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Pulling mounted USB mass storage X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 04 Nov 2005 07:08:40 -0000 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello, Don't know if this is really a hardware question or not but here goes anyway. I acidently did this and I know I will do it again unless I avoid using it all togeter. when I did it there were gibberish files left in the mount point and I got continuous errors on the console. rebooting seemed the only course at the time. I have read somewhere on this list (around september) that it might be possible to configure BIOS to make more memory visible, although a couple of 100 megs will be lost, which is OK. We'll see how it goes, I'll have a similar machine delivered soon, that I can make some tests on. If I need more memory, I can go amd64 on the machine (it is an EMT64), but that might give me some troubles with Java, since the 1.5 JVM is only alpha at this time. Or PAE, perhaps, but that removes many device drivers... I installed fbsd 6.0 just now, but upon post-installation of fbsd 6.0, I get the message "nve0: device timeout" and the Ethernet is unusable. My problem is exactly the same as the one describe in http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-amd64/2005-July/005469.html. Anyone could give me a clue to what might have gone wrong ? I've got two candidates one manufactured by Macally model number phr-100ac, the other a Prolific Technology model number ST31023 both have been reviewed good by friends of mine. The problem is i've not had great success with usb2 drive enclosures, a newbox is coming with usb2 and i'd like to get one for data transport. If anyone has any experience with either of these enclosures or could recommend one i'd appreciate it. Thanks. Dave.
