I wanted to activate my TFTP server today. Easy enough, just uncomment the TFTP line from /etc/inetd.conf. Well, there is no line to uncomment in my /etc/inetd.conf file. I have looked high and low and I can't seem to find anyone else that has ever had this problem. Afraid to just add the line, when everywhere I read says it should be there to begin with, I just decided to install a new TFTP server and be done with it. Tried utftpd and tftp-hpa. But both crash on install with a libiconv error: cc: Internal error: Killed (program cc1) Please submit a full bug report. Do a cvsup of src, and copy /usr/src/etc/inetd.conf to /etc and you'll have the TFTP line. I'm not too familiar with things on this scale so I need some input, if at all possible. I'm looking at setting up thousands of accounts, across multiple servers. Most will require: email and webhosting. Some database accounts, but not nearly as many as email/hosting. Well, I need a solution that would allow me to create users in some centralized location, and have the servers access that. It would start off as just two servers, one for mail one for web, and then maybe another server for whatever method the user accounts are stored/used. So, pretty much, virtual accounts on the servers for both mail/web. I really don't know how to go about this, any suggestions would be welcomed! I looked at CPanel and H-Sphere and DirectAdmin and etc, but it's not for me. Changed that one pretty quick, and luckily, use it almost nowhere else. :) >>cc: Internal error: Killed (program cc1) >> Please submit a full bug report. Thanks for the ideas on TFTP, guys. Although some went over my head, I do think I figured out my internal error problem. I was making the ports from my house using SSH and that is the error I was getting. What was really happening at the time is my swap file ran out of memory. The drive is 12 gig, with 9 gig free. I wish the swap file had been made bigger on install... On a different note, a coworker let me borrow a computer to install/learn FreeBSD on. At some point he will want it back. How does FreeBSD work at say, backing up and restoring, cloning the hard drive, or pulling the drive out and putting it into a different system? I was thinking about just installing from scratch on one of my own computers, but it is getting to the point where I have a ton of time tied up in this and maybe I don't want to start over. I kind of got thrown into an IT type of job at a wireless ISP and they have three FreeBSD servers running. In less than a month, just to learn my way around in UNIX, I have setup FreeBSD, an FTP server, a DNS server, Webmin, Apache (see: www.gospeedy.net) and I'm now working on smtp/POP3. That might not be much for you guys, but I'm happy that I have gotten as far as I have. The interesting part is that with these settings on Windows and Linux I have access to Internet. But FreeBSD refuse to work. What must be done to have access on FreeBSD v5.4. I found that the router IP address is 192.168.1.1 and if I up manually xl0 alias 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.252, change default gateway to 192.168.1.1 and make ipnat map xl0 192.168.1.2/32 -> 217.x.y.77/32 freebsd box now can use Internet. But I want use DHCPclient for xl0, because ISP offten change network settings. Does anyone known the solution for this problem. Looks like we've had a drive failure and the docs and stuff are long gone on this machine. Before my time. Machine is still running happily but I dont know which partition this drive is part of. / and /usr are RAID1 /var is RAID1 /var/mail is RAID5 with 1 hotstandby. I think its probably part of /var/mail as those drives are 18GB and /var/mail is quite a large partition. Ive not had a drive fail in a raid config before. Whats going to happen when I reboot this machine? From the docs Ive found online for this machine it has hot swap drives but Ive not tried it on this machine. What would happen if I pull the drive out since its hotswappable? I dont think Ive got another drive handy at the moment either thats 18GB, only a few 9GB drives. Thanks, Keith. Not sure how it'll work with FreeBSD as I haven't lost drives in any PERC2 FreeBSD boxes. There were PERC2's with at least a couple different chipsets. There may be software RAID utilities available that you can use (like asr-utils as an example). > What would happen if I pull the drive out since its hotswappable? Not something I'd ever do during peak hours. The absolute safest way with any OS, in my experience, would be to shut it down, swap the drive, power up and get into the RAID controller's BIOS and rebuild from there (don't have to wait for the rebuild to complete successfully), then boot the server back up.=20 Probably only 10 minutes of downtime. I'm not sure the asr ones will work as this controller is based upon LSILogic MegaRAID chipset. I'm not going to attempt a hot-swap for sure. I'm going to have to turn the machine off as Ive found with many FBSD machines that after you unplug a PS/2 keyboard while the machine is running then plug the keyboard back in a while later the keyboard doesnt work. So I gotta hit the power button and power cycle the machine... The hot spare drive is running and took over for the failed drive perfectly but I'm just not sure whats going to happen on a reboot. I guess since the hotspare is running the drives should just come up normally? Thanks, Keith
