This is a production system that has been running fine for over a year. It seems to be linked to a disk error of some sort. I often see log file entries like this: Sep 23 00:00:46 nfs2 /kernel: ad0: timeout sending command=c8 s=80 e=00 Sep 23 00:00:46 nfs2 /kernel: ad0: error executing command - resetting Sep 23 00:00:46 nfs2 /kernel: ata0: resetting devices .. ad0: DMA limited to UDMA33, non-ATA66 cable or device Sep 23 00:00:46 nfs2 /kernel: don Sep 29 11:49:01 nfs2 /kernel: ad0: READ command timeout tag=0 serv=0 - resetting Sep 29 11:49:01 nfs2 /kernel: ata0: resetting devices .. ad0: DMA limited to UDMA33, non-ATA66 cable or device Sep 29 11:49:01 nfs2 /kernel: done Oct 9 21:40:55 nfs2 /kernel: ad0: READ command timeout tag=0 serv=0 - resetting Oct 9 21:40:55 nfs2 /kernel: ata0: resetting devices .. ad0: DMA limited to UDMA33, non-ATA66 cable or device All I can figure is that the FreeBSD system is trying to read/write to ad0 (my primary HD) and there's an error of some sort, so it waits a bit and then resets the entire system. When I do an fsck, it comes out fine. So it's definately some sort of weird intermittent problem. Is my HD toast, or is FreeBSD acting stupid unnecessarily? __________________________________ Yahoo! Does your motherboard BIOS provided you with any temp reading? I had this same issue with 4.8,. 4.9 and 4.11 but is was the hardware and not the OS that was causing the problem. A good cleaning once a year never hurts The RAM, motherboard and IO controller for the IDE hard drive could be at fault. If you clean everything and do not have a over heat problem. I would try replacing the power supply, with at least a 350 Watt system that can keep that unit cool.. Can you get your important data e.g /usr /home backed up if the hard drive is going south on you? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ */Jeff Norris/* /~ Web Hosting ~ VPN Solutions ~ Network Management ~ Design, deploy, kick ass. / *N*orris*Techs* dot net http://www.norristechs.net *AOL IM or Yahoo IM: _ ntshelper _* rtsit wrote: >I've got a problem with FreeBSD 4.9-RELEASE resetting >itself. Also i've had this when a IDE controller was about to break down and when the disk itself was about to break down. If the system is running fine for a year and you havent really done anything big to it like updating it. I'd say that it is likely that your HD is going to be toast. Most of the 4-port NICs I've seen use the DEC Tulip 21x4x, which has polling support but not VLAN_MTU or VLAN_TAGGING. I've seen one-quad port fxp using Intel chipset which had polling and VLAN_MTU, but not VLAN_TAGGING. A quick look on CDW comes up with: Intel PRO/1000 MT Quad Port Server Adapter ($500) http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=475069 http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/pro1000mt_quad_server_adapter ...which ought to do, or even: Sun Quad FastEthernet network adapter - 4 ports ($1600) http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=737129 ...which is rather expensive. :-) There's also a Adaptec ANA-64044 LV KIT 4 port 66MHZ NIC ($480) http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=437044 ...but I don't know what chipset that is using. -- -Chuck From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Oct 13 16:22:11 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3B1BF16A426 for ; Thu, 13 Oct 2005 16:22:11 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from danial_thom@yahoo.com) Received: from web33306.mail.mud.yahoo.com (web33306.mail.mud.yahoo.com [68.142.206.121]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 60A0243D4C for ; Thu, 13 Oct 2005 16:22:10 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from danial_thom@yahoo.com) Received: (qmail 79247 invoked by uid 60001); 13 Oct 2005 16:22:09 -0000 DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=s1024; d=yahoo.com; h=Message-ID:Received:Date:From:Reply-To:Subject:To:In-Reply-To:MIME-Version:Content-Type:Content-Transfer-Encoding; b=CV9hgfK6fDmJdVZ2CBIkDqj3evj+uYZUPci/ADPrOjjeyomuuzKr5/3BBWS9M8uCQSJ40QSiM9ydUJjeev9U1hdXlJ7PlESzyBFz62JNAnosFqK1KPc3cDSQ4KIoXs72QSGb1KbIbQdrampbxUP7YReWX2dz1+Y04ckftcG5+R8= ; Message-ID: <20051013162209.79245.qmail@web33306.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Received: from [69.114.187.133] by web33306.mail.mud.yahoo.com via HTTP; Thu, 13 Oct 2005 09:22:09 PDT Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2005 09:22:09 -0700 (PDT) From: Danial Thom To: Drew Linsalata , freebsd-isp@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <20051013153932.97129.qmail@mail.gothambus.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Cc: Subject: Re: Multiport NICs - VLAN and Polling Support? I believe they use the sis(4) driver, which in my experience has been stable and not hideously low performance. I don't use polling or VLAN's, but a glance at the manpages suggests polling seems to support sis, and VLAN's will work too (with software assist). Tell me, oh mighty > terminal jockey, why is polling > with an em card classified as an endeavor for > the clueless? Because intel parts have programmable hold-offs (interrupt throttling rate) that allow you to tell the card exactly how frequently (or infrequently) to generate interrupts. So its assinine to use a kludge like polling, which adds tens of thousands of cpu cycles in overhead to your system when you can do it with zero overhead using the hardware mechanisms. polling is almost never a performance advantage for ethernet, as virtually all modern controllers have some sort of interrupt moderation built-in. The only reason that anyone has ever thought that polling was a performance advantage is that is screws up the accounting so things "appear" to be faster. The only thing it really does is make a trade off between livelock and dumping buckets of packets. I hate to break it to you, but adding thousands of "clock ticks" to your system is not a performance enhancement. The fact that FreeBSD doesn't properly account for the overhead in its measurements shouldn't be surprising, as most OS's don't. Set your receive rings to 512 and you can set interrupt throttling to 1/50th of your max packets/second (or even 1/100th for a router). I've used a setting of 6000 at a 600K pps rate with very little noticable latency to end users. DT __________________________________ Yahoo! Music Unlimited Access over 1 million songs. We had the case on fbsd 5.4p7 with SMP where bge drivers produced much slower throughput if we did not use polling. We measured using ttcp and the difference was from 2-3Mbyte/sec to 11 Mbyte/sec. What Danial is saying is that polling is whacking your CPU, while manipulating interrupt frequency at the NIC hardware level should make for a "free" (read: no cpu overhead) performance enhancement. If he's correct, you should see the same performance increase if you skip polling and go right to the NIC hardware interrupt tweak (assuming your BGE card supports it), AND you should get it without adding CPU load. This is interesting. I'm going to set up testbed when I have a little time and run both ways to see what happens. Question is, what mechanism do we have available to manipulate interrupt frequency on the NIC itself. The em driver does not appear to offer any options in that area, nor is anything like that configurable via ifconfig. Are we looking at a sysctl variable, or are we tweaking the driver source and rebuilding each time we want to try a new combination of values? Drew Linsalata The Gotham Bus Company, Inc. There is no possible way that polling would yield a 5 fold increase in performance. You're still using the same cpu to do the tasks. 11MG/s is such a small number of packets that it wouldn't generate enough interrrupts to make much difference to a modern processor. Thats what happens when you use benchmarks. Benchmarks are BS. Probably one of the many "features" that FreeBSD 5.x offers. It likely it has more to do with FreeBSD 5s handling of interrupts in an SMP environment than anything having to do with polling. DT Danial __________________________________ Yahoo! Although the list of users is very small, will alsolike to use the same authentication scheme for handling authentication against virtual mail accounts. The setup: mail provider with SMTP authentication. Currently using MySQL accross different machines, but not shared. Would like to have a single way to authenticate all email users accross all machines. Preferably a distributed system which can run on top of PostgreSQL. I have read of the following: NIS, LDAP and Kerberos. Security is obviously a concern. Well questions of which one are all a matter of opinion. LDAP is an established implementation of the .x500 standard, and the open version OpenLDAP can run with a mysql backend. It sounds like it would fulfil your needs. Kerberos is an authentication protocol rather than a directory service, and NIS is a simple directory service introduced by Sun. Hope that helps!
