This may be a bit intimidating, depending on your experience, but see the FreeBSD Handbook and read "The Cutting Edge". It describes how to update your sources and rebuild the system. You want to use a default_tag of "RELENG_5". (That should make sense after reading the section.) After updating the sources (the tricky part) you need to rebuild the system. That i pretty simple if you follow the instructions carefully. Just don't try skipping any steps. They are all there for a reason, even though some may not be too obvious. -- R. FreeBSD 5.3 *does* install on another P3-650 laptop on which I just upgraded the HD from 10GB to 100GB. My Pavilion is going to sit on a shelf until it can boot FreeBSD. The 100GB drive makes my old laptop suddenly usable again (as a primary machine). In hindsight, I should not have bought the HP, and it's too late to take it back. Thats what I get for playing World of Warcraft on it for 30 days under Windows. My advice to anybody thinking of buying an HP laptop, is to not do it. I bought the 100GB 2.5" drive for $200 at CompUSA, any old laptop that can already run FreeBSD can use one of them to become very useful again. I also bought a FireWire card for my old laptop, and am hoping that I will be able to use my external drives with FreeBSD (it worked under Win XP and Fedora Core 3). I have about 4 external 160GB drives that can work on FireWire and USB2. I didn't have much luck with them on FC3 using USB2, but they worked great under FireWire. I am hoping FreeBSD 5.3 will also work with FireWire. Windows was just the opposite, USB2 worked well and FireWire was flaky. I'm sure I'll ask more about my FreeBSD install problems in the future, but for now, I'm going to learn using the machines that it works on. By the time I'm comfortable with this OS, the problems will probably be solved. I don't blame FreeBSD for any of this, it's the HP Pavilion that is weird. Its the only machine I've owned where nothing could be changed within the BIOS (like disabling HyperThreading). The only thing I can change in the BIOS is the date/time. thx -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. I tried to dd the image and dd freedos neither worked. I went and found a windows machine and got the ps2 utlity on a floppy. I should have left well enough alone. I tried to shut off some of the unused IRQs it nevered seemed to work right. Then the laptop wouldn't boot it would just freeze in dmesg. I tried the 5.3 CD and it would freeze there also. Several hair pulling hours later I got it to boot again. I got some advise to try 5.3 STABLE , I was on 5.3 ReLEASE. So I went and did make world to bring into STaBLE. Well STABLE didn't change anything . Except that now my pcmcia card comes up driver allocation failed Dev ice not configured. I have to admit I am really frustrated at this point. I can't seem to get the IRQs to set up right. And I can't get rid of the interrupt storms which started this whole campaign. Yes the storms are still there. This really sucks. It's almost 1;30am and I have had no progress and wasted my whole weekend and can't even get back to what I orginally had. I can't paste dmesg or IRQ settings without typeing the whole thing by hand abd i really don't feel like it. My advice to the core group if they even read this. Knowing that I am not an FreeBSD god is bring back the IRQ conflict resolution screen that use to exist in 4.x because this sucks. Right now my only reason I havent gone back to 4.x is the dwindling hope that this can actually be resolved by a clueless idiot like me. Try adding a device "snd_sbc" line to your kernel config file, see if it helps :) Also, there may be no need to compile the sound driver into the kernel. If you have not defined a MODULES_OVERRIDE variable in your environment or your /etc/make.conf file, then, by default, the kernel building process will also build all modules. All that you need after that is to either manually issue a 'kldload snd_sb8' command, or add to your /boot/loader.conf a line saying: snd_sb8_load=3D"YES" =2E..as documented in the loader.conf(5) manual page. If you have an ATI graphic card you might be able to atitvout from Lennart Poettering: http://www.stud.uni-hamburg.de/users/lennart/projects/atitvout/ You'll need to substitute the included lrmi v0.6 with the newest version from http://sourceforge.net/projects/lrmi You have to look up the ioperm() functions in vbeinfo.c and compare them with the appropriate i386_set_perm() functions. After that you need to replace the ioperm() functions in atitvout.c which are exact the same as in vbeinfo.c with the i386_set_perm() function. I've attached a patch for this which is more than a year old. It worked back then but i didn't try again. Whatsmore you should use gmake instead of make. > Thank you > > Martin Best Regards, Jochen From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Feb 23 16:30:41 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1E78116A4CF for ; Wed, 23 Feb 2005 16:30:41 +0000 (GMT) Received: from epz01.nefonline.de (epz01.nefonline.de [212.204.66.1]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 21D3043D39 for ; Wed, 23 Feb 2005 16:30:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from J.Keil@gmx.de) Received: from sillium.dyndns.org (DSL01.212.114.237.166.NEFkom.net [212.114.237.166]) by epz01.nefonline.de (NEFkom Mailservice) with SMTP id j1NGUbX13291 for ; Wed, 23 Feb 2005 17:30:37 +0100 Received: (qmail 41100 invoked from network); 23 Feb 2005 16:30:38 -0000 Received: from semeon.lokal.lan (HELO ?192.168.1.7?) I hope that solves your problem just as it solved mine. --=20 Philippe CASIDY Consultant G=E9nie Logiciel - Syst=E8mes & R=E9seaux Informatiques T=E9l : +33 (0)5 61 76 99 89 Fax : +33 (0)5 61 76 97 04 http://www.casidy.com/ Mon catalogue de formation est disponible: http://www.casidy.com/fr_Forma= tions.html From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Feb 24 12:16:28 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BAD9816A4CE for ; Thu, 24 Feb 2005 12:16:28 +0000 (GMT) Received: from sigma.informatik.hu-berlin.de (sigma.informatik.hu-berlin.de [141.20.20.51]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D20E343D54 for ; Thu, 24 Feb 2005 12:16:27 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from sebastian.ssmoller@gmx.net) Received: from tyrael.linnet (p54BCEAAF.dip.t-dialin.net [84.188.234.175]) (authenticated bits=0) (8.12.10/8.12.9/INF-2.0-MA-SOLARIS-2.8) with ESMTP id j1OCGLRF014100; Thu, 24 Feb 2005 13:16:22 +0100 (MET) Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2005 11:10:34 +0100 From: sebastian ssmoller To: pcasidy@casidy.com Message-Id: <20050224111034.39eb3bd6.sebastian.ssmoller@gmx.net> In-Reply-To: <20050224091934.5E0DEB870@smtp.casidy.net> References: <20050224091934.5E0DEB870@smtp.casidy.net> X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 1.0.0beta4 (GTK+ 1.2.10; i386-portbld-freebsd5.3) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: ndis stopped working X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2005 12:16:28 -0000 hi, > Hi! > > I just find your message while google'ing for "symbol drv_data > undefined" because I had the same problem as yours. > > I solved it by regenerating the ndis_driver_data.h file. > > ndiscvt evolves and the if_ndis module has to be updated. first time i tried this it didnt work somehow - but after having read your mail i retried - cleaned everything - rebuilt everything ... et voila - it did the trick ;-) thx, seb -- "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." --- Antoine de St. Exupery, Wind, Sand, and Stars, 1939 From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Feb 23 21:28:18 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C0CD816A4CE for ; Wed, 23 Feb 2005 21:28:18 +0000 (GMT) Received: from marvin.muc.de (marvin.muc.de [193.149.48.2]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 9DDF043D48 for ; Wed, 23 Feb 2005 21:28:17 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from 520067528081-0001@t-online.de) Received: (qmail 52723 invoked by alias); 23 Feb 2005 21:28:16 -0000 Delivered-To: mods-muc-lists-freebsd-mobile@moderators.muc.de Received: (qmail 52716 invoked from network); 23 Feb 2005 21:28:16 -0000 Received: from mailout06.sul.t-online.com (194.25.134.19) by marvin.muc.de with SMTP; 23 Feb 2005 21:28:16 -0000 Received: from imh00.t-online.com by mailout06.sul.t-online.com with esmtp id 1D443L-0003tF-00; Wed, 23 Feb 2005 22:28:15 +0100 Received: from news.t-online.com by imh00.t-online.com with esmtp id 1D443L-00049t-00; Wed, 23 Feb 2005 22:28:15 +0100 Received: from news by news.t-online.com with local id 1D443L-0002Ic-00; Wed, 23 Feb 2005 22:28:15 +0100 To: muc-lists-freebsd-mobile@moderators.muc.de Path: news.t-online.com!not-for-mail From: Ingo Guse Newsgroups: muc.lists.freebsd.mobile Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2005 22:28:30 +0100 Organization: T-Online Lines: 7 Message-ID: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Trace: news.t-online.com 1109194095 05 8841 foMUrb36CTEx4te 050223 21:28:15 X-Complaints-To: usenet-abuse@t-online.de X-ID: SIw1fsZJgezaCWI2ahbjWQRWVl3NWbZL+tYhXrMgHizq38CWMllBsG User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 (Windows/20041206) X-Accept-Language: de-DE, de, en-us, en X-Mailman-Approved-At: Thu, 24 Feb 2005 14:18:39 +0000 Subject: ata search during boot X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2005 21:28:18 -0000 I installed FBSD5.3 sucessfully on Toshiba-SatelliteM30 notebook.WLan and X with NVidia-driver 1280x800 works fine. I noticed that OpenBSD lists it as a supported device under wi: http://tinyurl.com/4v4t5 And the Prism 3 is a supported chipset under FreeBSD's wi driver, so it would appear that the USB stuff is all that's missing. FreeBSD 5.3 on a Soekris 4801 recognizes the device merely as "ugen". Is there planned support for USB devices in wi? -- Jesse Guardiani, Systems Administrator WingNET Internet Services, P.O. I decided as a stress releaver to close down a few orphanages, rip the wings off of flies, and pour salt on slugs. I will go back into it and try again. The problem is the paperwork doesn't show how to do a reset on the BIOS and closing down IRQs on this type of BIOS is not an easy thing if you are not familiar with it. I am not and I fear causing some of the very problems I had happen. I was able to finally get it back to where it was where I am still getting my interrupt storms same as before. Except I had to get a Different NIC as it would no longer work with my previous NIC. And yea, your notebook will never be fully functional under FreeBSD, do you realize that? No I don't . It worked fine under 4.x. It should do the same under 5.x. My knowledge level is low with a high expectation level. It's a dangerous combination but I have faith. I hope that before 5.4 STABLE is released that most of these issues are dealt with. I don't code so I can create the solutions. I can only note the issues and try to implement the solutions suggested by others and report back on my findings. It's a sucky situation but it is my way to contribute. This thread has been long and the people have been extremely helpful, but it isn't over yet. I want to be able to try to help find a solution to this. I will go back in again this weekend and try the PS2 utility again but I have to admit great nervousnous as I work with this laptop and losing it would suck. It's not a server but it is my main computer for me to work with. I still believe that there should be an easier answer than having to use the PS2 utility but I don't know how to write one. It is in my /home/bhorne/My_Downloads/FreeBSD/ directory. I changed to root and ran make. Seemed to work fine . I ran install. And it requested it a bunch of switches. So I stopped with the install. I then figured I would try man smapi and it brought up the man page. It gives a brief description of what is there. At the bottom of the man page it says see also smapi (9) . I tried man 9 smapi and it came up with not found ( No entry for smapi in section 9 of the manual ). I then went and checked if the module loaded with the install . Slacker# ls -a sys/modules/bios/ ls: sys/modules/bios/: No such file or directory So I need to know how to load the module. So I am getting there I just need to get some final details. Any recommendations? Does any exist at all? What about in general about: Intel PRO Wireless 2200BG MSI MS-6820 Gigabyte GN-WIKG? I have tested the KMOD from http://www.init-main.com/acpi_tpkey/ with no success. Keypress notifications were received by devd with no further effect. Due to the missing documentation I was not able to configure anything beyond the notification effect. Did anyone succeed in this? Is there any other known way to blank the screen? Closing the lid while hw.acpi.lid_switch_state is set to NONE blanks it. I did not find any other working method with this effect while using ACPI. Btw. the hotkey works while running the TP with APM instead of ACPI. Regards, Thomas Kempka -- Thomas Kempka
