I've browsed around the ports tree but have yet to really find anything that seems appropriate. If someone could possible point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, John. MP3s are self-synching .. modulo losing any tag header info, we've had good results just seeking anywhere into hour-long MP3 recordings of an FM station's logging files, and just cutting out sections using dd .. I'm not really interested (or able) to rewrite bktr to that extent, but it= =20 would be nice if only PCTV Rave cards were actually recognised as PCTV Rave= =20 cards. I've cc'd the author of the patch with this mail - Arne, can you=20 perhaps try and narrow down the PCI IDs for the PCTV Rave cards somewhat? A= t=20 present, it catches all Pinnacle brooktree devices which come with Pinnacle= 's=20 "new" vendor id and that generates quite a lot of false positives. =2D-=20 ,_, | Michael Nottebrock | lofi@freebsd.org (/^ ^\) | FreeBSD - The Power to Serve | http://www.freebsd.org \u/ | K Desktop Environment on FreeBSD | http://freebsd.kde.org --nextPart2288544.eSdJ9ABSTL Content-Type: application/pgp-signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQBB2ICeXhc68WspdLARAjKGAJ9a7Xgkx8aq8c5r5DZCLvKOahKgWACglzsZ GCc8JabuD3uYWR+UdjZTBUM= =N8Hp -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --nextPart2288544.eSdJ9ABSTL-- From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 3 15:07:44 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 30FFE16A4CE for ; Mon, 3 Jan 2005 15:07:44 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtpauth03.mail.atl.earthlink.net (smtpauth03.mail.atl.earthlink.net [209.86.89.63]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EF60943D3F for ; Mon, 3 Jan 2005 15:07:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from stuartb@4gh.net) Received: from [138.88.61.220] (helo=freeman.4gh.net) by smtpauth03.mail.atl.earthlink.net with asmtp (Exim 4.34) id 1ClTo7-0006zP-Id; Mon, 03 Jan 2005 10:07:43 -0500 Received: by freeman.4gh.net (Postfix, from userid 1001) id E64C1FEEB; Mon, 3 Jan 2005 10:07:42 -0500 (EST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freeman.4gh.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id E3E10FEEA; Mon, 3 Jan 2005 10:07:42 -0500 (EST) Date: Mon, 3 Jan 2005 10:07:42 -0500 (EST) From: Stuart Barkley To: John Wilson In-Reply-To: <20050102161639.7dad47bf.BSD-Mail@nyc.rr.com> Message-ID: <20050103100448.Q2069@freeman.4gh.net> References: <20050102161639.7dad47bf.BSD-Mail@nyc.rr.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII X-ELNK-Trace: bd7a960cf527f14d0dfcb909368a26a64d2b10475b5711208229202ca7bab0c4ed156882c51ae4b00f5f6141733323fa350badd9bab72f9c350badd9bab72f9c X-Originating-IP: 138.88.61.220 cc: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: MP3 editing tools X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 03 Jan 2005 15:07:44 -0000 On Sun, 2 Jan 2005 at 16:16 -0500, John Wilson wrote: > I was wondering if anyone knew of any ports in the ports tree, or > otherwise for that matter, that would allow one to lop off the first > few seconds of an MP3 file... but not touching the file in any > other way, as in being able to do this without having to convert the > file to any other format and then being required to reconvert it > back to an MP3. audio/mp3asm From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 3 19:58:37 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B321B16A4CE for ; Mon, 3 Jan 2005 19:58:37 +0000 (GMT) Received: from kender.sians.org (adsl-ppp00.fastnet.gr [193.58.186.120]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9FA2B43D3F for ; Mon, 3 Jan 2005 19:58:35 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from thanos@sians.org) Received: from kender.sians.org (thtsou@localhost.sians.org [127.0.0.1]) by kender.sians.org (8.13.0/8.13.0) with ESMTP id j03JwU6n015761 for ; Mon, 3 Jan 2005 21:58:30 +0200 (EET) Received: (from thtsou@localhost) by kender.sians.org (8.13.0/8.13.0/Submit) id j03JwSLO012754 for freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org; Mon, 3 Jan 2005 21:58:28 +0200 (EET) X-Authentication-Warning: kender.sians.org: thtsou set sender to thanos@sians.org using -f Date: Mon, 3 Jan 2005 21:58:28 +0200 From: Thanos Tsouanas To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20050103195828.GA7399@kender.sians.org> Mail-Followup-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2i Subject: professional sound studio with freebsd, anyone? I'm an openbsd user, ive used freebsd quite a lot in the past but i have no more than a month's experience with linux. I'm thinking of freebsd, netbsd or gentoo linux as an OS. I saw some ports (like rosegarden) lagging behind in both freebsd and netbsd.. Please share your experience with me. P.S. Currently the studio i've been working in was based on win/cubase/HALion .. I'd like similar quality.. But, latency is not an issue for me, since i use hardware synths for playback and there is no latency there. I listen to my keyboards realtime, while midi is being recorded. Afterwards i can edit the midi, and use sounds from the pc, but then there is no latency :] -- Thanos Tsouanas .: Sians http://thanos.sians.org/ .: http://www.sians.org/ From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 4 01:28:53 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 29F4F16A4CE; Tue, 4 Jan 2005 01:28:53 +0000 (GMT) Received: from S1.cableone.net (smtp1.cableone.net [24.116.0.227]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BD12043D1D; Tue, 4 Jan 2005 01:28:52 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from v.velox@vvelox.net) Received: from vixen42.24-119-122-191.cpe.cableone.net (unverified [24.119.123.89]) by S1.cableone.net (CableOne SMTP Service S1) with ESMTP id 6229660 for multiple; Mon, 03 Jan 2005 18:32:03 -0700 Date: Mon, 3 Jan 2005 19:27:53 -0600 From: Vulpes Velox To: Jacob Meuser Message-ID: <20050103192753.4a62057a@vixen42.24-119-122-191.cpe.cableone.net> In-Reply-To: <20050104000438.GA11123@funk.gsky.dom> References: <20041231021938.GC27979@Math.Berkeley.EDU> <20041231031501.GA28540@funk.gsky.dom> <20050103231803.GA10778@Math.Berkeley.EDU> <20050104000438.GA11123@funk.gsky.dom> X-Mailer: Sylpheed-Claws 0.9.13 (GTK+ 1.2.10; i386-portbld-freebsd5.3) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-IP-stats: Incoming Last 2, First 26, in=35, out=0, spam=0 X-External-IP: 24.119.123.89 X-Abuse-Info: Send abuse complaints to abuse@cableone.net cc: roger@freebsd.org cc: multimedia@freebsd.org cc: Steve Sizemore Subject: Re: Hauppauge WinTV support in bktr X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 04 Jan 2005 01:28:53 -0000 On Mon, 3 Jan 2005 16:04:38 -0800 Jacob Meuser wrote: > On Mon, Jan 03, 2005 at 03:18:04PM -0800, Steve Sizemore wrote: > > On Thu, Dec 30, 2004 at 07:15:01PM -0800, Jacob Meuser wrote: > > > On Thu, Dec 30, 2004 at 06:19:38PM -0800, Steve Sizemore wrote: > > > > > > > > From dmesg: > > > > > > > > bktr_mem: memory holder loaded > > > > bktr0: mem 0xfc001000-0xfc001fff irq 11 at > > > > device 7.0 on pci2 bktr0: [GIANT-LOCKED] > > > > bktr0: Hauppauge Model 29440 @ % > > > > bktr0: Warning - Unknown Hauppauge Tuner 0x9d > > > > bktr0: Hauppauge WinCast/TV, Philips NTSC tuner. > > > > bktr0: Warning - Unknown Hauppauge Tuner 0x9d > > > > > > > > > > > Anything I can do to help the process? > > > > > > find out what kind of tuner it has. this information is usually > > > on the tuner (the "box" on the card where the cables attach), > > > but you may have to peel back some stickers ;) > > > some model numbers are listed in sys/dev/bktr/bktr_card.c. > > > by looking at the tuner on my two different cards, I was able to > > > determine what tuners they had. > > > > Thanks for your answer, Jacob. There is still confusion going on here. OSS is the Open Sound System. It's a commercial driver suite available for= =20 many platforms, including Linux and FreeBSD. I know about the focus, but this is no 'desktop' use, it's a music workstation, not some fun-with-music-apps pc. I have been satisfied with performance and stability back in the days i was solely using freebsd, and that's why I would prefer to use it than start over with linux. Now, OSS is commercial, so I wouldn't like to go with it. I know 30 bucks is not much but it's against my views for my new studio. P.S.: Anyone here that uses freebsd for a music workstation? Running 5.3 RELEASE with an SBLive!. I use the snd_emu10k1 driver for sound and it works, but whenever I enter quake2forge (from the port), wolf3d (from the port), quake3, enemy territory or doom3 (all in linux compat.), my stereo sound channels get reversed. I checked with arts and winamp and the sound channels are correct there. I have no clue what's causing this swap of sound on these few applications considering xmms and quake all use the /dev/dsp device. Furthermore I tried running xmame 0.88 port but this one replies with no mixer plugin found, using real-time sound and gives nothing but choppy sounds all the way. Tried different flags, even change the size of the emu10k1 default sound buffer in the kernel sources, but to no avail. Anyone know about these issues or how to get rid of them ? I have a ASUS Pundit-R (http://www.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=Pundit-R&langs=01). Everything works fine except that I have no sounds. The specifications for the computer says that its an ADI AD1888 chip and pciconf tells me that it's a "AD1981 AC'97 Audio Controller by ATI. This seams to be unsupported by FreeBSD. What is needed is a driver for ATI chip called IXP200. Is there anyone who is developing drivers for this setup? (1) I thought I might port the driver (atiixp.c/h) from ALSA to FreeBSD. The chipid numbers in those files matches those with pciconf. If no one has done any development on this I think I will give it a try. Those files go under GPL. How does that affect the development? The last "official" patch set for MIDI dates back to August 2004. I asked Mat Kanner (author of the MIDI stuff and patches) if he could provide some updated patches a while back, but never heard back. He seems to have a tendency to drop in and out of sight around here. :-) We'll see. I'm sure *one* of these days we'll recover our long-lost MIDI capability; I just don't know when. -- Conrad J. As you know, FreeBSD lacks a few driver for recent sound hardwares. I'd like to change this but all hardware I got is old/discontinued one and no new driver was needed except cs4231 on sparc64. > I looked at the atiixp driver for ALSA and one of the FreeBSD AC'97 drivers and > I don't see why I shouldn't be able to peice something together. But I don't know you got a copy of ATI IXP200 datasheet. If the datasheet is not avilable you have to guess its register layout/usage from linux driver. Direct porting linux driver to FreeBSD may be possible but I don't like GPL'ed source codes contaminate our tree. Of course, the driver can live in ports tree but maintaining kernel driver in ports tree is endless pain to driver maintainer. While writing cs4231 driver on sparc64 I read existing driver code in sys/dev/sound/pci directory. You may also want to see sound subsystem, bus dma and locking section in Architecture Handbook.
