This problem has been mild and only occasional with recent versions of Xorg, but is very noticeable in the latest version (xorg-server-6.8.2_6). The system is fine during full power mode and during the initial blanking of the screen which starts after 10 minutes of no activity. The warnings occur after the simple screen blanking and before the actual DPMS power down. My guess is that either your monitor does not handle one of the three DPMS= =20 power states correctly or that there is a bug in the mach64 driver or perha= ps=20 there's even a hardware problem with the graphics adapter itself. Either wa= y,=20 you can probably work around it by skipping the respective power state. You can do this with the xset utility, if your window manager/desktop=20 environment does not bring its own facility to control the DPMS timeouts. The usage is: xset dpms =20 'off' is the mode with the least power consumption, the unit of the timeout= is=20 minutes. Specifying 0 will disable the respective mode. I tried the "xset force" method and the monitor was stable in standby, suspend, and off. However, I can try setting the timeouts to avoid whichever stage is a problem in regular use. The monitor cycles normally on the same computer in Win98 through: 1) On 2) Blanked (still full power) 3) Standby or suspend (both use the same rapidly flashing LED) 4) Off (slowly flashing LED) In FreeBSD, the successful endpoint has been Standby or suspend. The difference is that standby has vertical sync and no horizontal sync, and suspend is the reverse. Both use similar power. Thanks again for your suggestions and help. My guess is that either your monitor does not handle one of the three DPMS power states correctly or that there is a bug in the mach64 driver or perhaps there's even a hardware problem with the graphics adapter itself. Either way, you can probably work around it by skipping the respective power state. You can do this with the xset utility, if your window manager/desktop environment does not bring its own facility to control the DPMS timeouts. The usage is: xset dpms 'off' is the mode with the least power consumption, the unit of the timeout is minutes. Specifying 0 will disable the respective mode. (I autoconfigured the server and didn't think about setting a reasonable Modes line). It seems to work more or less up to at least 1400x1050. This appears to be a bug in the app. It is attempting to use dlerror to check if the previous dlsym() call failed, rather than checking if the dlsym returned NULL. libX11 is doing just fine, but a side effect of its eventually-successful dlopen()ing of libXcursor is that it will have caused a dlopen error, so dlerror() will be returning non-NULL for the next person that comes along. In an earlier stage, I already have communicated this patch to the developer of Grace, but according to him this is not acceptable, as he wrote to the grace mailinglist -- his reference is the Linux version of dlsym(), apparently not FreeBSD :(. Here is what he wrote: "Since the value of the symbol could actually be NULL (so that a NULL return from dlsym() need not indicate an error), the correct way to test for an error is to call dlerror() to clear any old error conditions, then call dlsym(), and then call dlerror() again, saving its return value into a variable, and check whether this saved value is not NULL." Therefore a better, and acceptable, patch is to insert a kind of 'dummy' call to dlerror() prior to the dlsym() call; this will reset any previous error condition, before calling dlsym(); then check the dlerror() again after the dlsym() call. (Remember that a dlerror() call resets the error condition!) The patch should be accepted into the Grace sources, or otherwise be added as a patch file to the grace port of FreeBSD. I don't know yet what's going to happen. Well, my point is that there is also something not quite right with X11 and/or with FreeBSD: See here: http://cvs.freedesktop.org/xorg/xc/lib/X11/CrGlCur.c?rev=1.3&view=markup The open_library() call is the source of the confusion. First, it tries loading libXcursor.so.1.0.2 (why it's hardcoded in FreeBSD remains a mistery) and fails, then libXcursor.so.1.0 and fails again, and finally succeeds with libXcursor.so.1, but the error from the previous failed attempt (libXcursor.so.1.0) remains uncleared.
