I don't intend to commit this while the ports tree is still not completely unfrozen. I think this would be a sweeping commit (since it affects several ports). Since I think this is a sweeping commit, I want to wait with the bsd.linux-rpm.mk stuff until the ports tree is completely unfrozen. I want to ask portmgr (I intend to CC you) for approval to commit the current patchset for linux-rpm (you've seen it already) together with fixes for your ports (because of the "new world order" after patching linux-rpm). Boris is preparing patches for your ports and will present them to you for review. I can include this patch into the patchset too. Actually this patch may fix something in your ports, so it's not a sweeping change but a potential fix for several ports. Again, why is 7.3 the > default if 8.0 is the currently-supported version? Typically you don't need to install a linux_base by hand. Typically an user is interested in a leaf port like acroread or a linux game or whatever, but not on a plain stripped down linux userland (linux_base is just an infrastructure port to satisfy dependecies, in case you need unix-tools, use the native ones). A little bit of history: "linux_base" was the traditional default port. A lot of different ports based upon different linux distributions appeared over time. Since the linux_base port is critical to the linuxolator infrastructure, and because it is a complex part to handle, you can't just change it inplace and hope everything works. You have to develop seperately and test a lot. And typically one person doesn't use or has access to all linux ports, so the testing has to be done "in public". For this reason I introduced the OVERRIDE_LINUX_BASE_PORT switch (and some other stuff to be able to switch the default linux_base port easily) more than a year ago to be able to switch to any linux_base-X port. Doing the development in a seperate port and then "moving over" to linux_base will lose the development history (more correctly: it makes it hard for anyone to look up the history some months later). The goal is to get rid of the linux_base (without any "-X") port/directory. We may be able to achieve this in the near future. > If a naive user installs linux_base to satisfy a dependency, how do > they know which one to choose (or which one(s) not to)? You don't need to do it by hand, it's one of the goals of the ports collection to automate this. A linux port has to use "USE_LINUX" which results in a dependency on the default linux base port of the day (or to the port specified by OVERRIDE_LINUX_BASE_PORT). So when you install e.g. acroread, the default linux base port (and some other linux ports) will be installed automatically. If this isn't the case, you found a bug and it would be nice if you report it with send-pr or the corresponding webinterface on freebsd.org. Could you please visit http://people.freebsd.org/~fenner/portsurvey/freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org.html and correct the problems listed there? The individual ports with problems are devel/linux-libglade,devel/linux_devtools,graphics/linux-ungif. If you have already corrected the problems and submitted a PR, please accept my thanks and apologies for the delay in getting the fixes into the tree. This reminder is created automatically and does not (yet) have a way to know if a PR fixing the problem has been submitted. Please do *NOT* send your response to me directly; I do not necessarily have time to commit your fix; please instead submit a PR via 'send-pr' so it doesn't get lost. Problems are usually of two types: 1. The software package has been upgraded and the version in the port has been removed. The best solution to this problem is to upgrade the port to the most current version of the software package. If you are a FreeBSD committer, then you can just upgrade the port directly. If not, you should create the updated port on your own machine, test it (and maybe even run "portlint" on it), and then use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -uNr old-port updated-port". If you added or deleted any files, please make an explicit note of it. 2. The mirror site being used no longer contains the software package in question, or no longer exists. Solutions include: a) If there are other mirror sites, just remove the bad site from the list. (Make sure that what appears to be a bad site isn't actually a problem of type 1, upgrade) b) If the README or other support files in the software documentation mention where to get the software package, use one of those sites. c) Use a search engine to find another place to get the original DISTFILES. Make sure that you don't pick a FreeBSD distfiles mirror -- if you can't find any other places where the file exists, it can be a LOCAL_PORT or you can simply comment out the MASTER_SITES= line, with a comment explaining why. Once you have a solution, use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -u" of the Makefile. Note that this isn't an urgent issue, as people who try to build the port now will just fall back to the FreeBSD distfiles mirror. Please just put it on your list to do and get to it when you have time. These messages will continue to arrive twice a month until the fix is committed, as a reminder. Thanks, Bill "distfiles" Fenner. Actually, I had to change the version of one port (audio/linux-openal) to a newer one as I can't fetch those from the current port. Other changes are plain (5 ports involved): o edit WRKSRC (add rpm/i386/${LINUX_DIST}/${LINUX_DIST_VER}; o add source distfiles to distinfo to allow auto fetching sources with defined PACKAGE_BUILDING; o remove some variables already defined at linux-rpm (i.e. MASTRE_SITE_SUBDIR); o add LINUX_DIST_VER to every port (in case default linux_base changes); o bump PORTREVISION. --=-=-= It's my second try to introduce a new variable to deal with linux sources. It was AUTO_LINUX_SRC last time, it's SRC_GPL now. Maybe someone suggest another name. Not all linux sources used at FreeBSD ports released under GPL or so. For example, devel/linux-allegro: ----- Allegro is gift-ware. It was created by a number of people working in cooperation, and is given to you freely as a gift. You may use, modify, redistribute, and generally hack it about in any way you like, and you do not have to give us anything in return. However, if you like this product you are encouraged to thank us by making a return gift to the Allegro community. This could be by writing an add-on package, providing a useful bug report, making an improvement to the library, or perhaps just releasing the sources of your program so that other people can learn from them. If you redistribute parts of this code or make a game using it, it would be nice if you mentioned Allegro somewhere in the credits, but you are not required to do this. We trust you not to abuse our generosity. ----- I propose attached patch. The default value is "yes". Comments are welcome. WBR -- Boris B. Defining "SRC_DISTFILES=" at the port's Makefile does the same (i.e. not fetching the sources when PACKAGE_BUILDING is defined). Thanks for cooperation! ;-) WBR -- Boris B.
