Date: Sun, 5 Feb 2006 17:31:16 +0100 Hi, the patch contains "3rd-level" entries. Is this a typo or by purpose? If yes, I'm not sure if the page coloring algorithm was designed to be tuned to the 3rd-level cache size or not. It's not unreasonable to think it was designed for the highest cache level, but I don't know. The 0x82 case (patch: cache size 128 -> 256) is already done in current independently from your submission. Date: Mon, 06 Feb 2006 11:00:47 +0900 Hi, thank you for your response. >the patch contains "3rd-level" entries. Is this a typo or by purpose? Not typos, but I haven't any specific purpose. I simply added lacked entries seeing intel AP-485 document without much thought, because identcpu.c 1.154 already had 3rd-level cache entry, such as 0x22 case. I'm not familiar with page colouring algorithm. If these L3 entries are harmful, please ignore them. cf. Intel Processor Identification and the CPUID Instruction Application Note 485 http://developer.intel.com/design/xeon/applnots/241618.htm Oh, now I can see this document is updated on January 2006. At this point I need to reset the machine. precise description of the problem (multiple lines)> >How-To-Repeat: See description. >Fix: I identified the problem (see my original discussion about this in attached the email below). On the Pentium P54C model (that's an old 120 MHz Pentium I use as a 4.x, 5.x, and 7.x ports build testbed) the CPUID instruction when called with AL = 0x02, CPUID returns EAX = EBX = ECX = EDX = 0. The code fragment in identcpu.c below results in "rounds" becoming 0xffffffff. do_cpuid(0x2, regs); rounds = (regs[0] & 0xff) - 1; The subsequent loop of the following will loop virtually for ever (it takes forever tor this machine to count down from 0xffffffff performing a very great many calls to get_INTEL_TLB in the process, virtually hanging the machine in the process. while (rounds > 0) { [... code ...] rounds--; } To resolve my problem I cobbled up the following patch to identcpu.c: --- sys/i386/i386/identcpu.c.orig Thu Feb 2 04:44:09 2006 +++ sys/i386/i386/identcpu.c Mon Feb 6 18:47:16 2006 @@ -1237,7 +1237,7 @@ do_cpuid(0x2, regs); - rounds = (regs[0] & 0xff) - 1; + rounds = (regs[0] & 0xff); for (regnum = 0; regnum <= 3; ++regnum) { if ((regs[regnum] & (1<<31)) == 0) { @@ -1249,7 +1249,7 @@ } } - while (rounds > 0) { + while (rounds > 1) { do_cpuid(0x2, regs); for (regnum = 0; regnum <= 3; ++regnum) { @@ -1452,7 +1452,7 @@ u_int nwaycode; do_cpuid(0x2, regs); - rounds = (regs[0] & 0xff) - 1; + rounds = (regs[0] & 0xff); for (regnum = 0; regnum <= 3; ++regnum) { if ((regs[regnum] & (1<<31)) == 0) { @@ -1468,7 +1468,7 @@ } } - while (rounds > 0) { + while (rounds > 1) { do_cpuid(0x2, regs); for (regnum = 0; regnum <= 3; ++regnum) { It fixes the hang. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Feb 7 18:20:05 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B58AF16A420 for ; Tue, 7 Feb 2006 18:20:05 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 41DE043D48 for ; Tue, 7 Feb 2006 18:20:05 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k17IK533004947 for ; Tue, 7 Feb 2006 18:20:05 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k17IK5Ax004946; Tue, 7 Feb 2006 18:20:05 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Tue, 7 Feb 2006 18:20:05 GMT Message-Id: <200602071820.k17IK5Ax004946@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org From: Geoffroy Desvernay Cc: Subject: Re: i386/86880: [hang] 6.0 hangs or reboots whilst 5.4 is stable (ASUS-A7NX motherboard with nforce2 chipset) X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Geoffroy Desvernay List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 07 Feb 2006 18:20:05 -0000 The following reply was made to PR i386/86880; it has been noted by GNATS.
