Please port > maintainers can you look (and perhaps report on this PR) whether you > have the same problems or know people who have these problems as well? It cpould be the long standing problem we have wrt. disk access. It depends greatly on the chipset / HDD / channel / ... combination used. I saw this with VIA and NForce4 chipsets. My KDE freezes when copying files between ad6 and ad10 (both SATA) and not when copying between any of them the the IDE disks. The standard answer to this in the past has been "it's crappy hardware"; of course, it's seems 90+ of (end-user) hardware out there is included in this category; and it works OK with other OSes. :-/ I have two suggestion that might help: increase the HZ for your kernel and / or your rtc port (if you use it) and use the ULE scheduler. I'd be curious to know if copying the file via rtprio 31 ... helps. -- IOnut From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 23 00:00:33 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 45F0216A4DA for ; Wed, 23 Aug 2006 00:00:33 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D3BAA43D4C for ; Wed, 23 Aug 2006 00:00:32 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k7N00WlH033670 for ; Wed, 23 Aug 2006 00:00:32 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k7N00WNR033669; Wed, 23 Aug 2006 00:00:32 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2006 00:00:32 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200608230000.k7N00WNR033669@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, jloo Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 791F516A4E1 for ; Tue, 22 Aug 2006 23:51:05 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [216.136.204.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2832343D55 for ; Tue, 22 Aug 2006 23:51:05 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id k7MNp4Mm075612 for ; Tue, 22 Aug 2006 23:51:04 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id k7MNp4Hk075611; Tue, 22 Aug 2006 23:51:04 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200608222351.k7MNp4Hk075611@www.freebsd.org> Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2006 23:51:04 GMT From: jloo To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-2.3 Cc: Subject: i386/102408: g_vfs_done():fd0[READ(offset=65536, length=8192)]error=5 X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2006 00:00:33 -0000 >Number: 102408 >Category: i386 >Synopsis: g_vfs_done():fd0[READ(offset=65536, length=8192)]error=5 >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: medium >Responsible: freebsd-i386 >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Wed Aug 23 00:00:31 GMT 2006 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: jloo >Release: 6.1 >Organization: na >Environment: >Description: I'm getting the above error msg during boot as well as when trying to mount any floppy on a dell inspiron 4150. >How-To-Repeat: mount the floppy drive with a floppy. note that a corrupted disk will cause panic. >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 23 09:40:26 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 724D316A4EB for ; Wed, 23 Aug 2006 09:40:26 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DE8B943D4C for ; Wed, 23 Aug 2006 09:40:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k7N9ePYW095599 for ; Wed, 23 Aug 2006 09:40:25 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k7N9ePTo095598; Wed, 23 Aug 2006 09:40:25 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2006 09:40:25 GMT Message-Id: <200608230940.k7N9ePTo095598@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org From: "Vaida Bogdan" Cc: Subject: Re: i386/91038: [panic] 6.0-RELEASE on Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro v2040 can't resume from sleep X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Vaida Bogdan List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2006 09:40:26 -0000 The following reply was made to PR i386/91038; it has been noted by GNATS. Can you tell us more about the used system, when the problems occur (and when the problem does not occur) etc. Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-i386->remko Responsible-Changed-By: remko Responsible-Changed-When: Wed Aug 23 10:31:03 UTC 2006 Responsible-Changed-Why: grab the pr. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=102408 From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 25 08:44:56 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 733D516A4E2; Fri, 25 Aug 2006 08:44:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from remko@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4406D43D4C; Fri, 25 Aug 2006 08:44:56 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from remko@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (remko@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k7P8iuuB078596; Fri, 25 Aug 2006 08:44:56 GMT (envelope-from remko@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from remko@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k7P8it3x078585; Fri, 25 Aug 2006 08:44:55 GMT (envelope-from remko) Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 08:44:55 GMT From: Remko Lodder Message-Id: <200608250844.k7P8it3x078585@freefall.freebsd.org> To: parias@nm.ru, remko@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org, remko@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: i386/96373: install CD - don't boot X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 08:44:56 -0000 Synopsis: install CD - don't boot State-Changed-From-To: open->feedback State-Changed-By: remko State-Changed-When: Fri Aug 25 08:43:13 UTC 2006 State-Changed-Why: Did you try some later version of the FreeBSD software? like 6.1? Can you perhaps show where the problem is occuring so that we can properly classify this? It is very hard to see what goes wrong since we do not have enough information. The bootloader (as far as i can recall) has the option to verbose boot; please consider using that during startup so that all the steps are being shown in a very chatty way. Thanks in advance.
